The Peregrine was enroute back to her home port, there was a fresh breeze and a beautiful crisp spray playing at the lee chains. Cain had been pacing up and down from bow to quarter deck as he mentally plotted the next change in course. They would have to tac soon and bring the ship close to to the wind. The bell was struck and Cain ordered tac the ship put our starboard a lee.
Sailors climbed up the shrouds and the ship was turned through the wind and that was when Cain caught the smell. It was the smell of blood on top of the salt sea smell. Cain was not the only man on the Peregrine to catch the smell and soon lookout gave particular attention as to the where the smell of blood was coming from. On top of the smell of blood there was the very slight smell of a whale.
Looking up towards the lookouts Cain called “Do you see any whale sign?!”
A moment later a reply came from one of the lookouts “No sir! No whale sign but there is a blackish red stain two points starboard!”
Cain stepped over and began looking over the water letting his eyes focus and ’zoom in’ to the dark patch of the ocean. Sharks were following the massive blood trail along with orcas and dolphins, and seabirds. There were very few thing that could cause a whale to bleed like that one of which was a whaling ship. Cain ordered a change of course to follow the trail of blood.
Several hours later they had arrived, the whale was head down with its fluke out a foot above water. It was a larger beast of a sperm whale and seeing a chance for a little profit Cain ordered. “We shall sawy up this whale and harvest the ambergris! Mr. Grimand if you will please start bringing up every empty barrel we have and it don’t matter if it’s an empty powder keg or a water barrel.”
Soon a rope was slung around the whale's fluke and the creature was hoisted foot by foot until it’s body was lashed to the side of the ship. Almost instantly the crew’s hopes for an extra bit of profit were dashed when the head of the beast came into plane view. From nose to its pectoral fin looked as if all of its flesh from its nose to its pectoral fin was ripped off violently. “What could do this?” Cain mused looking at Mr. Agon “Do you figure there's another paddle wheeled steamboat?”
The midshipman shook his head “Naw this looks more like something tried to fishhook it.” Mr. Agon put his pinky into the corner of his mouth and gave it a quick jerk at the corner. “This is damn strange.” Cain replied before ordering “Shove off this carcass we’ve been at this far too long for nothing.”
The whale was cut from the ship and and the Peregrine was back on course with Cain still wondering what was going on.
