Good for Nothing Captain
03-06-16, 09:55 AM
Name: Victor Valentine
Age: 29
Race: Human
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Red
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 195 lbs
Personality:
On the outside Victor tells himself and others he's just a boy at heart and takes nothing seriously. In many ways, he is the plucky hero. He doesn't enjoy matters dealing with war (particularly the war he lost) and responds to them with a bitter irony when in a good mood and a fist when not. Victor is unpredictable, he fights when he should negotiate and runs when he should fight. Victor tries never to meet expectations, and tries to show mercy, although, there is a limit to his mercy. Victor lost many precious people as a result of the civil war, including the woman who was both his adoptive mother and teacher. He never talks about that day, and only a handful of people know what really happened. After the war, Victor tried to close himself off from others, putting up a cold and indifferent front. But his ideals and values shine through in difficult situations, like a really irritating dim light, attracting similar souls to him. Much to his voiced disdain.
Appearance:
Victor is a fair, but average, looking man, with sad, perceptive and lazy eyes. His black hair is medium length and is generally disheveled. Victor usually keeps a clean shaven face, but sometimes he forgets or doesn't care. His everyday clothes are plain and simple, usually consisting of a linen dress shirt, beige leather pants and dark brown leather boots (sometimes he's just in his underwear). Over everything Victor wears a dark brown coat the stretches down to his knees. Victor used to take better care of himself but has since deemed it less than important. Many little (and big) scars riddle his body, but they are well hidden by clothes or accessories.
Skills:
Unrefined Swordsmanship: Victor was trained by many hands in the way of the sword. Because of his many tutors he does not have any traditional fighting style but can recognize many others. He uses his style of fighting recklessly and many times at a some cost to himself. Although his style does not reflect any standard technique, Victor's skill with a sword is Master class.
Military Tact: Victor spent years reading books on successful military strategies. While in the army, Victor was mentored by a masterful tactician and developed a keen sense for improvisation.
Social Drinker: Victor drinks... Often.
Weapon Knowledge: After learning about gunpowder based weaponry from his Commander in the Salvarian Civil War, and his miss-use of a rifle against a possessed suit of armor, Victor spent some of his free time in libraries, learning more about all the various weapons in Althanas. Very few weapons exist that Victor has not learned about and understands.
Weapon proficiency: Victor is comfortable using any weapon and able to apply his haphazard fighting style to any situation.
Social Instinct: Victor is proficient in the skill of deduction (in that it comes natural to him). He can get to the heart of a problem in an almost instinctive way. Intuitively, Victor puts the pieces of a problem together and finds it's solution; whether it's taking down a violent criminal, finding something long lost or getting someone a job, (if properly motivated) Victor can solve problems easily.
Swift Learner: Victor is able to learn skills and trades faster than normal people. He understands the mechanics of a task very quickly and easily learns to apply those to his work.
Irritating Dim Light: Victor has a indescribable knack to inspire loyalty, trust and friendship in others. He draws people to himself without meaning to (and usually, without wanting to).
Language Proficiency: Having been raised in an orphanage Victor has heard many of the languages spoken in Althanas and can usually discern meaning (or at the very least the intentions) of most other languages.
Abilities:
A Demon's Strength: Years of carrying heavy lumber and metal have made Victor stronger than normal people. Added to that, almost a decade of war and bloody battles, and the training of his deceased adoptive parent and his commanding officer have pushed Victor's strength to sheer demonic depths. While his body may be unassuming he has enough strength break through rock and (using a weapon) break metal structures. He can now perform feats of strength it would normally take ten men to do, from lifting heavy objects to breaking down doors. This also affects the sheer force behind his attacks. Victor is ten times more powerful than an average fighter. Using something of equal or greater hardness, Victor can break through any material.
(8x strength)
A Demon's Endurance: His willpower moves him when his muscles can't. Victor can keep running, fighting, swimming, and moving in general, for ten times longer than a normal person, making it ten times harder for him to give in to fatigue and exhaustion.
(6x Endurance)
A Demon's Skin: Victor does not actually have demonic skin. But his body has weathered enough pain to have built a resistance to oncoming damage. He still bleeds if you cut him and burns if you light him ablaze. But the mortality of that damage is reduced by ten. Meaning it would take ten times more damage to kill him than an average person.
(5x Resistance to DEATH)
A Demon's Determination: Victor is able to dig deep, and find the mental fortitude to overcome physical/mental pain and exhaustion. Victor has eight times the pain tolerance of a normal person: If Victor gets his fingers cut off he's still going to feel it, he will just be affected half as much as an average person. Basically it'll take eight times the beating to make him give up due to pain. Having actually died from torture and been brought back, there is little that can get under Victor's skin. It would take 8 times more anything, as opposed to a normal person, to break Victor's will.
(5x Will power)
Equipment:
Steel armor left over from the war against the Church of the Ethereal Sway. Which he never wears because it's smelly and stained by food and drink (and blood, but it's hard to tell which is which).
The Bastard; dull steel in a black scabbard. Made from the blade of Commander Edward Valerian, after it had been broken in battle. A long blade, sharp on the edge and dull on the back. The shoulder of the sword had a diamond-like shape, thick around the middle and thinning out towards the handle and the blade, but its hilt was unorthodox. With no cross guard, there was only a long thin grip, with enough room for two hands to hold it and a pommel with a dull silver gem imbedded in it. He doesn't carry it anymore, because it's stained by food and drink (the blood washed out, though) and keeps with his armor.
Standard survival pack given to those in the war against the Church of the Ethereal Sway (where he keeps his food and drink and map).
A long, blackened, unstained, brown coat (He has a really good dry-cleaner).
Map of Salvar (which is stained by blood) that he spilled a drink over.
History:
A boy was born in war-torn Salvar with unusual red-colored eyes. His parents joined one of the many war efforts when he was a baby and never returned. Or maybe they were just killed by bandits. He never knew. The child, barely a year old, was left in the hands of a community who could hardly look after itself. His eyes made him a pariah, feared and hated by children and unwanted and avoided by adults. Not long after the boy could walk he left and wandered the land. No one went looking for him. Barely able to survive or look after himself, he could only scavenge what was left behind by the dead. After days of meandering, the boy came across a long abandoned battleground riddled with corpses.
Rumors began to spread of a corpse eating demon with red eyes. The young boy spent his days fearing everyone who he saw and protecting himself with any weapons he could find. The boy, very quickly, learned to use a sword. Months went by and the boy spent every day fighting for his life. He made the battlefield his home and stalking-grounds. One day, a young woman made her way onto the battlefield the boy called home. Hearing the rumors, she made her way out to see the 'demon' for herself. But instead of a Demon, all she found was a small child, eating a half-rotten apple.
Suspicious of the woman, the boy drew a nearby weapon. The boy watched the intruder from behind red eyes. His gaze fixed, his hands grasping the looted sword. The strike was clean, almost impossibly fast, for a child. In the blink of an eye, Victor's blade was on the ground and the woman was sheathing her own. Rosalind just sat down and began eating an apple. He tried, in vain, to land a blow with his blade, each attempt ending in terrible defeat. But the woman never stopped eating the apple. Finally, he collapsed at her feet and looked up.
Her disarming smile unsettled the boy and she put a fresh apple in his hand. She introduced herself as Rosalind Valentine and pair talked briefly, in-between the boy's loud eating. Rosalind offered to take the boy in as a student at her school; to teach him to read and write and wield a blade. The boy asked if he would be as strong as her and she challenged him to find out. He said he could not walk and she carried him on her back. It was then, after learning he had no name, that she gave him one.
Such was the birth of Victor Valentine. The boy grew well under the tutelage of Rosalind and the other 20 orphans. There was no shortage of care and love in the old broken house. Victor learned a lot from the many older orphans. He helped out in any way he could, learning skills that could make him of use. There were dwarves, half-elves, dark elves and other races, beside humans, in the orphanage. But none of them, no matter the size or age could best Victor in a sparring match. None except two; Alder Whitemane a noble-born human who abandoned his name and inheritance to study with Rosalind. Peter, a dark-elf and skilled mage at first refused to spar Victor, who could not use magic. But over time, after a lot of pestering and one emotionally charged speech, the dark-elf accepted Victor as an equal. An especially strong bond was forged between the three boys. Over many years the children grew and new ones entered their ranks. The large school became a family stayed together keeping happy and safe. Victor learned quickly from Rosalind, as did Peter and Alder. The three of them grew to be exceptionally strong warriors. They worked hard to defend the small house from any threat. To all, Rose was mother and teacher; most of the children were orphans or runaways. She had saved all of them from a horrible reality and united them all under the banner of family.
In the week that Victor turned 21, a raiding party from the church of the Ethereal Sway, bearing the mark of Saint Denebriel, demanded shelter and provisions. The orphans had little choice, though many wanted to fight. After a short stay the leader of the zealots, Damian Gorgos, watched the many young men spar. He wondered if they would fit the profile of the people he was to exterminate under the 'purge,' he and his radical sect began.
Damian was quick and methodical in his cruelty. He forced the children and young men into bondage, as prisoners of war and candidates for indoctrination. Rosalind, however, was to be taken as a prize for himself. The family took arms against their aggressors and pushed them out, easily overpowering the Zealot's ranks. The war was at their door. Those who could, took up arms against the Church of the Ethereal Sway, but Victor stayed to protect his home. Alder, a former noble, felt compelled to join the battle; he still had his pride. Peter, a mage and therefore a target of the Sway, joined to keep his sworn brother safe.
In the short few weeks that followed, Victor heard news that Alder and Peter were captured by church forces. Rosalind bid him to help his friends, but they were just a diversion. Bait to draw out Victor, while Damian's forces captured the figure-head of his family. Victor was never bound. Not caught or beaten. Surrounded by his enemies and captured friends, he was made to make a terrible choice.
"Victor..." Rose spoke softly, "I'm leaving things in your care. But hey, there's no need to worry. I'll always be look out for you guys, I'll always be thinking about you and loving all of you with everything in my heart. So, till a day when you can all stand proud, in a time of peace and happiness... Our comrades... Everyone... Please protect them for me, okay? Let's... make it a promise..."
And through bonded wrists she lifted only her pinky. "You know what they say; pinky promises aren't something to take lightly..." And then the blade came down. Damian looked into the boy's eyes when it was over, they were half closed: like a dead fish's eyes, the eyes of someone broken. He spat at them. Victor spent one year protecting their home while Alder and Peter fought the war. Until, finally, the Royalist soldiers made camp near the broken school, and Victor left for the front-lines.
Victor spent 6 years on the fronts, rising through the ranks to Lieutenant under the command of Edward Valerian. He forged more bonds with fellow soldiers and saw many of his friends die. During the battles, as he fought through the enemy, fueled by rage and splattered by blood, he earned the name Raukorad. Which meant 'red demon,' in Elvish. Victor met Elizabeth Day, a 14 year old, retired assassin, who's spirit was a kindred to his own. Their bond grew strong and the two formed an unlikely, but exceptionally powerful duo.
Alder, growing more hateful and wicked, betrayed his friends; he joined forces with Damian Gorgos, and ended the young life of Eliza Day. During a ritual to summon an ancient evil, and ally of Denebriel, Eliza's life had been sacrificed and Alder was used as a vessel. The ritual did not seem to work, to Damian's surprise, and Victor unleashed his rage. The battle ended with Eliza dead, everyone badly injured and Alder unconscious. It was not until later that it was discovered that Alder shared his body with the vampire demon, Diadeus. The war ended soon after and the group thought, at least, that peace could now return to their lives. Alder, however, had other plans; setting fire to the camp and disappearing into the flames.
Victor spent a year wandering, eventually making his way to the Citadel, where he met Artemis Eburi. After being trapped in a false tournament, the two found out that the truth of their plight was far worse than they could have imagined. They had been trapped in the prison of Diadeus, set up centuries ago, by a group of adventurers and a monk of the Citadel. In a pocket dimension, the vampire demon lured in souls with the help of an agent imbued with a fraction of the demon's soul. After guidance from the spirits of the fallen warriors and unlocking their weapons, the two faced and defeated Diadeus. But during the battle a shocking truth had been discovered. Victor once more encountered Eliza, in the realm of the beast. She had been trapped there since the events of her death. The spirits of the monk and his group agreed that they should right at least one wrong committed after their failure to defeat Diadeus. By sacrificing their essence, they brought Eliza back to life; restoring her body and putting her soul back into it.
Victor left Eliza in the care of the citadel monks, so that she may heal. Peter arrived and kept her company, promising to find Victor once she could travel. And once more, Victor wandered, his path leading to Archen. . .
