Devyn

Name: Devyn Tarrendane
Nickname/Alias: Generally referred to as Vyn, others sometimes call her Tarren or Dane as well.
Age: 19
Race: Human
Height: 5’6
Weight: 125 lbs
Occupation: Inventor/Engineer, Mercenary for hire
Appearance:
With a small stature, Vyn is curvy and strong, a result of both genetics and the need to keep fit for her side jobs. Her legs are strong, her arms wiry, and her fingers nimble, though her flexibility is sorely lacking in almost every aspect.
Curly dark brown hair flows down from her head and is always getting in her way. Nearly impossible to hold back, she often resorts to piling it on top of her head in a messy bun, sticking various objects in it, and pushing back her bangs with aviator goggles she uses when working with the metal itself.
Mischievous green eyes twinkle out from beneath her goggles while a upturned button nose and wide mouth make up her facial features. Her face is round while her skin is pale from staying inside to work the newest project. Marked with various scars from either accidentally cutting herself, burning herself or just being plain clumsy, her hands are also heavily callused and have the greatest amount of scars.
Her usual outfit varies quite a bit but often consists of some sort of leather leggings, a loose top, a belt slung with various tools and a dark brown, leather bomber jacket. A dirty, grease stained smock is never far from her, and Vyn always carries a little notepad with her should inspiration decide to strike. When it’s needed, she also wears a long dark brown leather coat with tons of secret pockets. Leather bracers are worn underneath her jacket and leggings and protect her forearms, shins and parts of limbs where the joints are not. On more serious missions, she sometimes wears armor on her torso, but generally prefers not to, because of the discomfort and unnecessary weight.
Personality:
Unreliable, Vyn cannot be trusted with much of great importance. She finds trouble in sticking to one project, in hanging around a certain place for long, or simply staying put. Never constant, moods sliding from one to the next and then back again, she delights in variety and progress, always looking for the next thing and towards a new world. Not very trustworthy either, she isn’t the best person to trust with secrets, and can be bought over for a price, unless it relates to a customer.
About as loyal as someone can throw her, the only thing she’s concerned about is her own well-being and the greater good. It’s not that she doesn’t care for people, has problems getting attached or the like. In fact, she loves meeting new people, forming connections and making some sort of impact. She just values herself a whole lot and believes that she can make a change for the better. As long as she thinks something will benefit her, she won’t have many problems doing it, whether it be breaking the law or betraying a longtime friend.
Arrogant and quite the sass master, Vyn wants to do something, make an impact and be the one to help make the world a better place. She’s confident that one day, she’ll come up with something to revolutionize all of Althanas, and so seems to ooze confidence and a sense of superiority. The woman can be quite irritating, and tends to clash with a whole lot of people. When she does, she’s always ready with a bucketful of insults (both good and bad) to hurl at her opponent. She finds it quite amusing when huge reactions appear, and so continues to piss people off if she dislikes them.
A passionate person, she loves what she does with all of her heart. She loves the idea of creating something awe-inspiring out of some metal and grease, loves coming up with grand plans to better life as a whole, and loves getting a sneak peek at other’s lives while doing some dirty work. She’ll defend her work quite fiercely at need be, and has no trouble shooting down other sin order to make herself feel better about herself.
Independent and a freedom lover, what Vyn most loves about life is the choices you can make. The idea of being in charge of herself and no one else is wondrous, almost more so than righting the world. Accepting help from anyone or admitting that something she believes in, has said or done is wrong is something she hates to do. Acknowledging her mistakes isn't something she's the best at, and while she may be aware of them, Vyn's not the type person to draw attention to her flaws. She is the type of person to point out others flaws, though, and she won't hesitate to do so if it helps her. Being in control of her life is a necessity, and being locked up or having her rights thrown away would be equivalent to killing her. She'd rather die than be chained without a say in things. When people try to take charge for her, or take charge of her, she gets very pissed, and definitely, won't be friendly towards you.
As well as being untrustworthy, Vyn is untrusting and tends to look for ulterior motives. She loves people in general, loves figuring them out as if they were a machine, and all she needs to do is dismantle them a bit. However, life in Alerar isn’t all that luxurious for a human inventor trying to make her mark in the world. Being a merc on the side has taught her caution as well, and opened her eyes to the darker side of people. Therefore, however friendly she might act towards a stranger, she tends to be quite suspicious, especially when around those who seem selfless.
Vyn’s very hard to rile up and tends to shrug off insults very easily, as a result of her large pride. When she does get mad, though, she won’t bottle things up or waste time trying to hide it. Instead, she’ll blow up in your face and hold a grudge for a very long time.
Balanced between creativity and the more mathematical aspect of things, Vyn has both radical ideas and the brains to pull it off. Unfortunately for her, she relies on her “muse” instead of going to search for it, believing that inspiration should come to you. As well as that, once another idea comes along, she tends to lose interest in her current project and switch to the next without a second thought, which means she rarely gets anything done.
History:
Vyn was born to Farah and Sorrel Tarrendane, two generally ordinary humans who gravitated towards Alerar as a place of progress. The third born out of four children, Vyn grew up in a rowdy household with lots and lots of machines. Her mother was an engineer while her father was a gunsmith, and so she and her siblings Lila, Bronwyn, Tristen and Jes grew up with evidence of progress all around them. Their family was happy, got along well, and their children educated. The two parents made sure that their children were constantly influenced by change, taught them what they needed to know in terms of living, and were a content bunch.
It was the death of Lila that was their undoing, and the cause of Devyn’s departure. When she was 16, Lila, who was the rowdiest of the bunch was shot during the testing of one of her father’s new guns. Her parents, horrified, guilt-ridden and sorrowful completely shut themselves out in different ways. Her mother cooped herself up in her study and refused to come out. Her father abandoned his work and tried to act as if his daughter had never existed.
Their financial problems piling up, Bronwyn, Tristen, Jes, and Devyn worked hard to keep their family afloat. Bronwyn and Tristen made guns while Jes and Devyn made machines to sell. Slowly, they began to rise, and by the time Vyn was almost 17, things were looking up. However, she wasn’t content with this small life. She’d always thought she was meant for something greater, and so seeing her family in a good state, she left. Her dad completely disapproved, and learning of her dreams, shunned her like he had shunned all progress and machinery.
Her siblings were supportive, though, and that was enough for her, as she took her savings and rented an apartment far away from their district. Soon, money became an issue for her as well, and she knew that’s she couldn’t turn to selling her stuff on the street like so many others. And so she delved into the darker aspect of Ettermire. She would do anything to keep her dream alive.
Though she wasn’t cutthroat, and she wasn’t willing to do a lot of things at first, Vyn did know how to shoot. It was from there she built up her reputation as a mercenary, and from there that she started.
She still visits her siblings to see how they’re doing, studiously ignores her father, who pretty much disowned her, and continues to do odd jobs to keep herself afloat. At the moment, what she most wants is the inspiration or the funds to start a new project, one that she’s determined to stick with, that will change something. She wouldn't mind travelling around and seeing new places, and becoming the idea of a travelling inventor is quite appealing to her.
Skills:
Artsy- Vyn’s always been creative, and loved getting her ideas out onto paper. Whether it be by drawing, writing or crafting something, she’s good with her hands and loves making something out of nothing.
Marksmanship- A crack shot, Vyn has always been around guns, and is a very good marksman.
Amateur Knife Skills- Vyn is okay with throwing knives, but pretty much lacks knowledge with everything else in that area, though knows where to cut for the kill if need be.
Knowledge of most things mechanical- Having grown up around machines, she knows them inside and out, and can be quite knowledgeable about most issues.
Hand-to-hand combat- She knows the basics on her to defend herself, can be a right spitfire when attacked, and has no problems fighting dirty in order to win.
Charisma- Vyn has a way with people, and can be quite persuasive when need be, as well as getting on their good side when she’s in the mood.
Nimble fingers- Due to working in a profession that requires quite a bit of precision, Vyn is light-fingered and stealthy with her hands, which is good for pocketing things that may or may not legally belong to her.
Mad Iron-Rod Poking Skills- At the moment, her main weapon is a pair of sharp iron rods that she pretty much uses to poke people with.
Abilities:
Speed– Around twice as fast as an average human being, she can run very fast, but as a result, her endurance is lower for a while after running flat out.
Strength- Around twice as strong as an average human being, Vyn's strength endurance is the same as any other's, only she can lift heavier loads or normal loads with less strain. This applies to both offensive and defensive moves.
Perception- Her senses are above average, so see sees more clearly, hears more clearly and tastes things more strongly, etc. This can be both a blessing and a curse because she’s more perceptive as whole because of it, but because it can be kind of overwhelming and overpowering at times (she’s used to it, but at times, some senses can block out other ones and so forth). Her sight is twice as far as an average human's, (average sight after the average human's range, if that makes sense and twice as perceptive to details in the normal human's range). Her hearing is more ranged than focused, in the sense that she can choose how far to hear, of which her limits would be twice the distance as an average human as well. For smell and taste, it's 2x stronger, and she's able to pick out different scents/ingredients in things. As for touch, it's the same as the others, at 2x more than an average human's, and she's able to pick out the finer details, like singular threads in a cloth and so on. In summary, her perception is doubled to twice the amount of an average human's.
Equipment/Weapons:
Utility Belt- It holds some pieces of scrap metal, is where she hangs all of her weapons, and where she stores her wallet.
A dagger- Iron
Notebook + Pencil
Aviator goggles
Leather bracers
Two sharp iron rods
