Name:
Rolan Durandai
Nickname/Alias:
None at the moment
Age:
25
Race:
Human
Height:
5'10"
Weight:
145 lbs.
Occupation:
Adventurer (Former Apprentice)
Personality:
Rolan tends to have a generally well-rounded personality, with not many distinguishing factors that would pin him as a particular emotional type (hot-headed, cool, shallow-minded, cocky, etc.). When he is happy, a smile can be seen on his face. In sadder times, a more sullen expression can be seen. When enraged, his teeth clench and his eyebrows furrow. So on and so forth.
However, he is for the most part very easygoing. A good phrase to describe him is that he "bends like a flower in the breeze." He generally has an open mind to other people's beliefs and backgrounds, and is never quick to judge. At the same time, he does not compromise his own ideals when faced with opposition. Rather than being like a wall and standing fast, he tends to act like a river, merely flowing around the opposition.
The only time that he ever acts against this, is when he sees injustice against others. His mindset is that one should be free to do whatever they wish, as long as it doesn't bring harm to others. Should he ever witness something that goes against this, you can be sure while he may not act immediately, Rolan will certainly start taking actions to stand against it.
History:
From the time he was 5 years old, Rolan was an orphan that lived in an orphanage that was on the border of Salvar and Alerar, which was run by a small collection of acolytes from the Church of Etherial Sway. It was there that he grew up for most of his life, getting to know and become close friends with the other orphans, eventually at one point becoming like an older brother to the younger children and helping to assist the acolytes with the daily duties needed to upkeep the orphanage.
During his time growing up at the orphanage was where Rolan gained a good amount of his knowledge of the world, reading many of the books that were kept in the small library within the establishment. However, the one item that was a personal effect of the young man's was a small book that he was left on the steps of the orphanage with. Contained within were ancient texts of another language which was unreadable to anyone he knew, populated by many pages of techniques and skills of some form of exotic combat, mixed with extended pieces which could be any kind of content. The acolytes at the orphanage suspected that it could be some form of philosophy that resonated with the techniques that were depicted in the book. During his spare time Rolan would try to emulate the techniques in the book, but since he couldn't read the text itself, the applications and finer points within were still hidden. As such he only managed to touch on at most one or two techniques.
Unfortunately, the end of his innocent life came not as a bang, but a whisper. Rolan's time with his "home" would come to an end about half a year after he turned 24, when agents of the Church came and forcefully closed the orphanage down. As it had turned out, many of the texts that were kept in the library, provided and obtained by the acolytes themselves, were not approved by the religious higher-ups. Some of the books even contained evidence of magical teachings which were outright banned. A group of Empowered Priests were dispatched to the orphanage, bringing the acolytes into custody and moving the children than were there to other homes.
Being at an age where adoption or relocation was likely too difficult to do, Rolan was taken to the nearest town and left in the care of the town's crafting guild, a collection of blacksmiths, carpenters, and the like. Being the apprentice of the guild itself, Rolan ended up touching and gaining hands-on knowledge in the various crafting fields, although not becoming adept at any due to constantly changing professions, almost in a daily basis. In the end, it was enough to make a living.
A few months after turning 25, a few things began to nag at the back of Rolan's mind, the strongest being related to his birth parents and the book he was left with. Out of the desire to find out more about who he was, he decided to start adventuring across the many lands in search of the answers to those questions. Being gifted with the items needed for basic survival outside of the cities, he set forth.
Appearance:
At first glance Rolan doesn't appear to look his age, and would most likely to be mistaken for being a few years younger. Due to only recently beginning his travels, his features haven't been beaten or weathered by the various elements and obstacles what one would normally see in a seasoned adventurer.
His skin is fair, with his body being only slightly better toned than a regular citizen, mainly due to his various past interests which have trained his muscles and such. Since he has focused on flexibility and speed over strength, none of his limbs are over-developed or bulky, edging more towards a leaner frame.
As for his facial features, Rolan has medium length dark black hair which reaches to just at the middle of his nose's bridge, forming into bangs which tends to sweep towards right side of his face. He had softer features due to his bone structure, with the main part of him that stands out is his heterochromatic eyes. The colors clash against the darkness of his hair as they are a medium-hue blue and violet, left and right respectively.
Skills:
Jack of All Trades: Due to his past experience in the crafting guild, Rolan has very basic knowledge in the crafting professions, in particular woodwork, blacksmithing, tailoring, and tanning, as those were the most prominent aspects of his town.
Exotic Martial Arts (Novice): Most of Rolan's experience in combat is from personal reflection and the techniques depicted in the small book he carries. The book itself contains techniques from not just one form of combat, including basic and more exotic forms of weaponry. Of course, since Rolan doesn't understand the language within the book itself, he can only learn from the pictures within it, having to fill in the gaps of with what would make sense to him.
Abilities:
Agile: Since he has a leaner frame and a toned body frame, Rolan tends to be more agile, relying on speed and dexterity over brute strength. However, he values preserving himself over striking an opponent. Because of this he is capable of reacting in about half the time a normal person would to incoming threats while having the endurance to dodge in a drawn out fight for an extended amount of time where another might tire.
Opportunist: Rolan has a situational and environmental awareness much more developed that an average person. Because of this he is capable of quickly recognizing and positioning himself in ways that would serve to his advantage in a fight. When traversing terrain he is able to quickly recognize obstacles in his path, although it may not mean he is able to discern a way around it.
Enduring: Even though he spent most of his life in the shelter of the orphanage, Rolan had gained a significant amount of physical and mental stamina from his training and assisting the acolytes with the daily chores. This has given him a stronger resistance to harsher climates compared to a normal person, allowing him to survive for longer periods of time in spite of lacking the required tools needed to survive in the more dangerous terrain.
Equipment/Weapons:
Simple Iron Sword: A simple iron sword that Rolan assisted in forging. He designed it in such a way so that he can hold it in a solid grip from any of the parts of the hilt. In addition, the sword itself only has a single bladed side, even though it is forged like a double-edged sword.
Survival Gear: The starting survival kit that Rolan was given upon his departure. Contains equipment needed to survive the wilderness, consisting of a carving knife, fire-starting tools, a sleeping tarp, and a roll of medical wrap.
