Belenus

Name: Lugh Belenus Dalton IV (Note: Lugh is pronounced “Loo”)

Race: Dark Elf

Gender: Male

Age: 917

Eye color: Brown

Hair color: Light Brown

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 162 lbs

Occupation: Chemist/Engineer

Appearance: Lugh is tall and skinny, but carries himself with grace and ease of movement. His skin is somewhat lighter than what is usually seen from his race, though it still maintains a tanned appearance. His hair is fairly long, which he normally keeps pulled into a ponytail that reaches just past his shoulders. His long, pointed ears are angled backward more than the average elf, giving the impression of being swept back from his narrow face. Dalton wears a pair of dark brown slacks and brown leather shoes, which he tries to keep polished whenever possible. On his upper body, he wears a white, collared button-up shirt underneath a dark brown vest bearing three buttons. He typically leaves the top button of his shirt undone. Lugh occasionally dons a long white lab coat reaching just below his knees. He cannot wear this coat while carrying his backpack, as the pack is connected to the metal framework worn outside his clothes and is too large to fit under his coat. Finally, he owns a pair of glasses with round frameless lenses, used for reading.

Personality: Being a member of an aristocratic family, Lugh is well-versed in etiquette. He is usually seen as quite charming, though when confronted with those he finds to be ‘barbaric’ (those who rely primarily on magic) he tends to be condescending. Witty and refined, it is rare for a comment or quip to catch him off-guard and without a quick retort. His disdain for magic users shouldn’t be confused with dislike, though to those who don’t know him it may seem so; while he does hold a personal distaste for magic itself, instead he pities those who rely on it for their daily lives as another man might pity someone who doesn’t know how to read.

Dalton’s comfortable upbringing kept him somewhat insulated from the trials of the common people, and as a result he has a fairly sunny disposition for the most part. While he is aware of the struggles that others may face for daily survival, he doesn’t have a true appreciation for them, which prevents him from being very sympathetic towards the complaints of others.

History: Lugh Belenus Dalton IV comes from a long tradition of scientific research and development. Most of his ancestors were researchers, doctors, chemists, engineers, or mathematicians, and in many cases were a combination of several of these occupations. The Dalton family is an old one in Alerar, and works closely with the government to advance the country’s technology. Over the generations, they have amassed great wealth and standing in thee country. His father, Lugh Belenus Dalton III, was instrumental in the development of the airships now found in Alerar. Naturally, Lugh IV followed suit, and was educated in many fields from an early age with a particular emphasis on mathematics and chemistry. Over time, his personal interests narrowed to focus on the development of technology, specifically machinery and automation through steam and clockwork. Additionally, as a means of finding efficient methods for fueling the machines he was studying and developing, he continued his education in the field of chemistry. Aside from these, Lugh possesses a more generalized knowledge of many other fields, including mathematics, ballistics, biology and anatomy.

Lugh’s formal education also included lessons on the properties and applications of various types of magic, however his tendency toward the “hard” sciences led him to feel particular disdain for these practices. As such, after completing his formal schooling, he set out to establish himself as a sort of missionary for technology, hoping to convert what he sees as the uneducated masses who rely primarily on magic for their basic necessities in life. While he accepts the results of fusing technology and magic as a step in the right direction, he generally refuses to use such equipment himself.

Lugh did participate in basic combat training, but it was done for sport rather than survival. As a result, while he knows how to handle a dueling sword (i.e., a rapier) and how to box, he has rarely (if ever) tested either of these skills in a genuine fight. While he is confident in his own abilities, the real world is of course much different than a controlled contest limited by rules and referees.

Equipment:

HMTD: In well-cushioned pockets inside his vest, Lugh carries two small glass vials of a substance known as Hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, or HMTD. This substance is highly explosive, and he triggers this reaction by throwing the vials at his opponents as a rudimentary grenade which detonates on impact. Because of the small volume of HMTD in each vial, the explosions alone are not likely to be fatal, though they could cause severe burns. If it hits a target directly, the damage will be greater, and the propulsion of glass shards from the impact are likely to cause damage as well. He carries additional ingredients and vials to make more HMTD in his backpack, but these are kept separate and do not pose any threat without being properly prepared. There are enough ingredients on hand to make roughly eight more explosive vials, but this preparation takes time and concentration. He carries only two prepared vials at any given point in time to avoid any accidental detonation.

Exo-frame: This thin, lightweight framework is fastened securely with belts along Lugh’s entire body, running first up the outside of his legs, then up his back, and then down either arm. It is worn outside his clothing, but under his coat. This steel framework is highly articulated, although it does hinder his range of motion slightly, preventing him from using high kicks. The frame serves to support additional weight, provide Lugh with extra strength, and functions as a fastening point for other equipment. Strategically placed springs and pneumatics on his legs and arms allow him to jump higher than an average elf and lift greater weight than he could on his own by a small margin; this margin will increase as he refines and improves the system. At its current state, it will serve to deflect blows from weapons of lesser strength, but anything made of steel or stronger materials will at least bend and possibly break or cut through the framework. Naturally, attacking at jointed areas will cause more damage to the exo-frame.

Pneumatic Fist: A steel punching weapon mounted on the right arm of his exo-frame; a series of grooves in the frame and corresponding projections on the weapon allow it to slide easily into place and be secured to his forearm. It appears to be a more extensive framework, covering the majority of his right arm when attached. The fist covers Lugh’s wrist and knuckles in a solid steel plate surfaced with indentations like a meat tenderizer to enhance damage done. A handle with a button on the end is positioned so that it is gripped in his right fist with the button under his thumb. On the upper arm rests a cylindrical chamber where a shell containing pressurized gas is inserted, used to “fire” the weapon. When in position, Lugh depresses the button to launch his fist into a powerful punch, delivering a great deal of force. The range, of course, is limited to the length of his arm, and while the movement of the punch itself is very rapid there is a delay between the time the button is pushed and the time the arm moves into motion. During this delay, there is also a telltale hiss of the pressurized gases being released from their shell. After being fired, Dalton must manually eject the cartridge and reload one of the two additional cartridges carried on his belt (for a total of three uses per thread). Following each use there is also a delay of several seconds to allow the unit to cool, and during this time he cannot move his arm. If he makes contact with this punch, it will do significant damage to whatever it hits; if he misses, however, the time required to reload the arm is enough to leave him very vulnerable in combat. Its additional size and weight also slows down his regular movements with his right arm, reducing his overall effectiveness and range of motion while wearing the weapon. He also must have proper time prior to using the pneumatic fist to remove it from his backpack and attach it to his exo-frame, so it will do little good in the case of a surprise attack.

Backpack: Dalton wears a slightly oversized backpack mounted on his exo-frame to support its weight. It is roughly the size of the backpacks commonly used for hiking. The backpack has a frame itself to protect its contents, and is covered in a simple canvas material with various flaps and pockets allowing access inside. When needed, it serves as a sort of portable laboratory where he can mix the various chemicals stored within. It also houses a number of different tools and small spare parts used in the adjustment and maintenance of his mechanical equipment. Here he stores his pneumatic fist and the spare shells used to fire it. A sort of rip-cord reached from Lugh’s right shoulder can release the backpack from its connection to his exo-frame, so that he can easily jettison the excess weight if he must engage in combat or make a quick escape.

Forearm blades: Housed within the portion of his exo-frame that extend over his forearms are a pair of thin iron blades, which can be extended by tripping a catch on the underside of each arm. Each blade is about ¾ of an inch wide. The tip reaches about six inches past his knuckles with his hands balled into fists. The narrow design designates them as thrusting blades, rather than slashing, and their relative weakness makes them more of a back-up weapon than a primary one.

Skills:

Chemistry: Lugh Dalton is well-versed in chemistry, and can concoct many solvents to accommodate many different needs. This is limited to the basic ingredients on hand, and by overall working conditions, as certain solutions may have specific conditions under which they must be made.

Mechanics: His experience in mechanics and automation allows Lugh to analyze and repair basic machinery, though things he is unfamiliar with will take more time. The more intricate the device in question, the more difficulty he will have with it. Having designed himself the equipment he utilizes, he knows its every bolt and spring, and is able to identify most any problems or damage with minimal effort, though repair times will vary with the extent of the damage and accessibility of materials.

Pugilism: He is an average boxer, having participated in boxing as a sporting event during his school days. However, as was mentioned earlier, this was done for sport rather than survival, and his technique does not necessarily apply to real-life, full-on fistfights so much as a formal boxing match.

Highjump: By bending his knees to the appropriate angle, Lugh’s exoskeleton allows him to jump roughly six feet in the air from a standing position. If he can manage to do this while running, it will launch him much farther than a normal jump, however it is difficult to reach the proper angle so quickly and suddenly, and there is an equal chance that he will fail to engage the jump and either jump normally or stumble and fall. This technique (when executed successfully) is limited to two uses per thread.

Pressure Punch: Utilizing his pneumatic fist, Lugh delivers a powerful punch with his right hand. This requires that the pneumatic fist is equipped (which takes between two and four minutes, depending on the circumstances) and loaded with a pressure cartridge, and is limited to three uses per thread. Leaves him vulnerable for three or four seconds after firing before he can eject the spent shell and reload.
