Boris mentioned in the Time to Make a Change (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?30788-Time-to-Make-a-Change) thread that he would like to see more solo competitions. This has be reiterated again in chat and has garnered some support from solo enthusiasts that know who they are. Since I have quite a few updates and changes working on, I don't have the time to drum up something from scratch. So, I want those interested to start working on an idea for your solo competition to see if it would be worth the effort. This is also an opportunity to see how popular the idea may be.

Here are some questions to think of:

How many participants should there be? How may minimum, how many maximum?
How long should rounds last? One week, two weeks?
Should there be a daily post rule like 24 hours? 48 hours?
How long should the threads be? Just the usual 10 posts? Or would it be greater, like 20 posts?
How would the prompts work? Would they be staff ran? Would the players create the prompt? Would it be topic based?
How would the winners be chosen? Are there even any rounds? How would the first round transition to the next round? Would there be a new prompt, or a continuation?
What would make it different than the Adventurer's crown or a 1v1 thread?
Are you aware that 1v1 PvP matches do not have to be combat threads?

My thoughts below:

5-10 participants, depending on the judge given it being individual threads.

Two week duration. Only one round.

No daily post speed.

The threads required to be 8-10 posts, and reason ability on length.

Staff would post a prompt, the players would run with it. Or the staff would post an introduction post to a story, and the authors would take that post and use it as a foundation to build a story out of. You could have certain elements you have to incorporate, like top chef, and emphasize certain elements of writing, such as focusing on setting (more than just looks).

Winners based on overall score, with a flat wildcard for all authors, or varied based on how well they incorporated the requirements given by the prompt. Top 3 overall scores win prizes accordingly.

I think writing on my own is a challenge because I have to come up with my own ideas and put my writing and execution to the test, and I can't have someone else carry me like Letho did for my JC.

Also, to the last question, yes.

So something like this with one round instead of four and longer threads?

Yeah, I could say that's mostly accurate. I wonder whether one judge for consistency would be good as well, whereas that event had two. But mostly.

Im thinking eight people, three rounds, judge run prompt. Like the AC, but all solos? Four people advance, finals is a head to head with two?

So, I quite literally linked you the first concept of Vignettes ever mentioned by Althanas staff and you agreed that's what you're looking for. So, instead of creating a Vignette under the tournament sub-forum, what can we do to make Vignettes more appealing to you? Would you like two categories for Vignettes? A Brevity Vignette focusing on something around 500 words, and a Classic Vignette focusing on around 5,000 words (the average for a ten post thread)?

Do you want more rewards? A leaderboard? Full judgements on every Vignette (quite a bit of work for our poor judges)?

Or are you adamant about having a seperate thing labeled as a solo tournament?

I'm not too particular. I think a yearly "super-vignette" of a sort under the vignettes section might be fun, but with a lengthier requirement. Say like you said, something between 5000 and 7500 words, spanning 8-10 posts, with 8 entrants as a cap. one round. two weeks to write.

It's just a thought. Really, if I'm the only one who thinks it's a good idea then can it haha I'll keep writing solos anyway. =)

This suggestion is closed. It has been resolved that Super Vignettes will be created from time to time as an additional writing exercise.
