Name: Kak Zalta
Race: Dark Gnome
Gender: Male
Age: 15 - Gnomes have a lifespan in excess of 100 years, but reach full maturity very quickly, at age 7.
Height: 3 foot 2
Weight: 67 lbs.
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Brown
History: Gnomes are delightful, peaceful, joyful, generally happy creatures. They do sometimes engage in mischief, but nothing particularly damaging. However, all the joy and happiness of the race is offset by one, dark, entity known as a Dark Gnome. Each tribe of gnomes has one Dark Gnome, born when the previous Dark Gnome dies. Dark Gnomes are immediately recognizable by their pitch black hair and the tangible evil aura that accompanies them. When a Dark Gnome is born, he is immediately taken to the nearest human city and left by a roadside somewhere. There is no attempt on the part of the gnomes to care for or help along a Dark Gnome, they are considered lower than a rat or other pest. Their mother’s feel no love for them and feel no sorrow at their abandonment. On the few occasions when a gnome tribe has tried to raise and accept a Dark Gnome, the result has inevitably been disastrous for the tribe. Built into the very soul of a Dark Gnome is an intense hatred of gnomes that they cannot fight. When the Dark Gnome of a tribe dies, the evil spirit of the Dark Gnome travels back to its tribe, inhabits a fetal gnome, and is reborn. That Dark Gnome is immediately exiled. It is through this constant purging of evil that gnomes remain so happy. Kak is one of these Dark Gnomes, a foul creature motivated by everything evil in the world.
Appearance: Kak is similarly sized to a standard gnome. However, instead of the cutish, rounded features of a gnome, Kak is a knot of muscles and sharp features, making him more closely resemble a skinny dwarf. Rather than the cheerful, flowing beard found on most gnomes, Kak keeps his facial hair to dark stubble. His face has small scars and pockmarks, many from accidents working with explosives.
Seeing Kak without his shirt on is a somewhat disturbing. A host of scars from old injuries, many of them self inflicted, cover his arms and chest. His back bears the marks from his failure to escape after one of his many criminal ventures. Justice’s whip has left deep scars across his back.
Personality: Kak is a vile little creature. Pain and suffering, even his own, is exciting and invigorating to him. As the antithesis of a gnomes happiness and carefree attitude, dark gnomes thrive on destruction. Cruelty and greed are his hallmarks. Kak can be quite charming and cooperative, when it serves his purposes, but he would never fool anyone into trusting him. Generally, people get a bit of a chill just being in his presence that is hard to ignore.
Skills: Kak has two main skills; stealth and explosives.
Like all gnomes, dark gnomes are experts at not being seen. Gnomes actually live among humans, frequently venturing into cities to watch, make merry, and cause harmless mischief (for example, taking socks from the laundry and hiding them in absurd places). Their magical stealth abilities allow them to go unseen. A dark gnome uses his stealth abilities to much different effect, stealing through the night to burgle, vandalize, and murder. Kak is especially adept at blending in with natural environments such as rocks and wood as well as doing especially well in darkness, including shadows.
In his quest for destruction, Kak turned to the most destructive hobby he could find, explosives. Learning from tradesmen, stealing secrets, and occasionally selling his services to mines, Kak has become quite enamored with explosives and has become somewhat skilled in their manipulation and creation. From ingredients, he is able to manufacture bombs, set charges, and explosive powders. Currently there are three types of explosives Kak can manufacture.
High explosive: These are basic BOOM sort of things, just a powerful explosive blast. The powder used for high explosives is red in color.
Smoke: When ignited, these produce a cloud of smoke. The color and thickness of smoke can be varied by adding different chemicals, but all the powder is black. Smoke can be “clean” or “dirty.” Clean smoke obscures vision, but will not impair breathing a great deal. Dirty smoke has particles added that will get caught in the throat or sting the eye. Nothing serious, but annoying.
Light: A bright flash of light accompanies the ignition of this style of explosive. The powder is white and the color of explosion can be varied by adding different ingredients. Because the light is produced by burning, light bombs are also very hot and can start fires.
Other than these skills, Kak can fight with his gladius and buckler. His skill is barely above average and he would prefer to avoid a straight up fight whenever possible. His only unique skill in combat is that he is well practiced at fighting with the buckler and gladius in his left hand, leaving his right free to toy with his various explosives.
Although immensely strong for a gnome, Kak’s size makes him physically inferior to most larger humanoids in terms of speed and strength.
Equipment:
Clothing- Drab brown pants, brick red tunic with black leather belt. Several pouches and a sheath for Kak’s gladius hang from the belt.
Weapons~
Gladius, staff, and buckler – There is nothing special about these weapons. The gladius is steel, double bladed, and appropriately sized for a 3 foot fighter at about 1 1/2 feet long. The only noticeable feature is that the blade of the gladius has been blackened, making it less reflective and better suited to stealth. The steel buckler, covered with a leather cover, has two straps that cinch tightly to the forearm and hand. The strap on the hand runs across the open palm, but allows Kak to hold and wield the staff or gladius while carrying and fighting with the shield. The staff is nothing more than a stout shaft of oak 2 1/2 feet long with iron caps buttressing each end. The staff can be used as a weapon, primarily defensive in nature, but it is really just a walking staff.
Armor~
Steel chainmail shirt and right arm bracer. Both of these are lightweight, mainly designed to deflect slashes, they will do little against a thrust or heavy chop. The steel of both is blackened like the gladius.
Items on person~
Bombs- Kak carries ten to twelve bombs with him nearly everywhere he goes. The bombs have a clip that allows the bomb to be hooked to Kak’s belt, making them easily accessible. Each bomb has an auto striking fuse that is ignited by a quick pull of a cap holding the fuse. Kak prefers a round, baseball size bomb that can be thrown with decent accuracy over a distance. High explosive bombs are usually coated in a layer of lead that will fragment when the bomb explodes, creating dangerous shrapnel. The blast of a high explosive bomb will cover an area 10 feet in diameter, while the shrapnel can fly 20 feet from the center point of the explosion. Light bombs are made of very lightweight tin that melts at the heat created by the light. Smoke bombs are also made of tin and have a hole that allows the smoke to escape, either in a single blast or slowly, depending on how the bomb is packed. Some bombs are also a combination of light, smoke, and blasting powder.
Currently, Kak is carrying 6 high explosive bombs, 2 dirty smoke bombs, 2 clean smoke bombs, and 2 light bombs.
Explosive pellets- Hanging in the small pouches at Kak’s belt are small pellets of each type of explosive. When crushed together, these pellets become unstable and will explode. By smashing a handful in his hand Kak can make a powder that, when thrown, can produce a weak explosion, cloud of smoke, or brief flash of light.
Explosives kit- Kak carries a small kit that he can use to modify the explosives he carries with him. The kit includes a small, sharp saw that he can use to open pre-made bombs, tools for mixing and matching explosives, packing paper, mortar and pestle for smashing and packing, a spool of fuse, and a number of other tools for reshaping the explosives. This kit and extra bombs are held in a leather backpack that Kak carries with him.
Items in storage~
To facilitate his explosive habits, Kak commandeered an uninhabited cave in the Concordia woods. It is not a large cave, but large enough to house his explosive mixing kit, consisting of tubes, beakers, cauldrons, vats, a variety of heating elements, and packing tools. Kak also maintains a supply of the chemicals, metals, fuses, and other pieces needed to make his explosives. Using these supplies, Kak can create new bombs and make larger, specialized charges. He also stores excess explosives in the cave. At the moment he has 10 explosive bombs, 5 light bombs, 5 dirty smoke bombs, and 5 clean smoke bombs in storage. He also has 3 larger, packed barrels left over from a blasting project he did for a mining company. These charges are very powerful, designed to blast through solid rock, but have to be carefully placed and require an extended fuse.
The manufacturing apparatus found in the cave can not be sold at any time.
