Name: Sir Iain Detrius of Harondale
Race: Human
Ht/Wt: 5’8”, 147lbs
Age: 19
Apperance: Iain is of the fair complexion so common among the noble
families of Salvar, with skin so white that the veins beneath are
clearly visible. Iain has dirty blonde hair that falls into small
curls right above his ears and in the back, but is straight enough to
hang down in the front, almost covering his eyes. His hazel eyes are
so deeply set in his skull that he always looks sickly to those
examining his face. His nose is crooked slightly towards the right,
testament to some forgotten childhood scuffle. When Iain appears in
public, he is usually clothed in a white hooded tunic emblazoned on
the front and sides with the crest of Detrius. He wears a black cap,
pointed in the front and adorned with the feather of a red tailed
hawk. Loose fitting black pants and a pair of traveler’s boots
complete his wardrobe. For non-combat, he wears his shield on his
back with a leather shoulder strap and his sword on his right hip in
a black scabbard. The rest of his belongings are kept in a white
shoulder sachel.
Armor:
1x Iron Pauldron – worn on left shoulder in combat
1x Crest Shield – Wooden heater shield painted blue white and black
in the colors of Detrius
1x Chainmail gauntlet – Iron, worn on left hand
1x Helm – Iron sugarloaf helm
Weapons:
1x Sword – Traditional feudal arming sword, iron
1x Stiletto – iron
1x Bolas – rope weapon tipped with flesh hooks instead of ball
weights
Items:
1x Signet Ring - Gold Ring with the crest of Detrius on it. It was
given to Iain by his father, with his blessing, when Iain left the
Estate after being knighted, to serve as proof of his identity.
Skills:
Nobility – Not exactly a skill, but Iain is the son of a feudal lord.
He was raised with an education that covered briefly the cultures of
all the major Althanian nations, taught reading, writing, and
arithmetic, and trained in the art of combat. He is an amateur
strategist and is moderately skilled in combat with all the traditional
weapons. While he is of average intelligence, Iain lived a fairly
sheltered childhood on his father’s land and knows little about most
of Althanas outside of what he has read in books.
Politics – Being of noble birth, Iain has had a fair amount of
exposure to the world of politics. From his experiences, Iain has
become familiar with the ways of the politician and the methods that
they commonly employ.
Falconry - Because of his avid pursuit of falconry, Iain has a vast amount of knowledge of the ways and species of birds and small game. He is able to use his knowledge in the art of capturing and training birds.
History:
Lord Lucius Detrius of Harondale, a large estate in Salvar, married at a young age to the daughter of a neighboring feifdom. He and his wife, the Lady Corinna Detrius, were loved by their serfs and townspeople as fair and just, always keeping the interests of the people a priority, behind only their loyalty and duties to the monarch or Salvar. Over the course of their prosperous marriage, the couple gave life to several children. The oldest, a boy, they named William. He was an enterprising youth, much more interested in combat and tactics than learning from books; languages and sums were not his forte, but William's parents loved him anyway. Unfortunately, this resulted in a degree of coddling and William developed into a brat of an adolescent. Despite being spoiled rotten, William continued his combat training passionately, and became a knight in service of the Salvic King.
The second child of the house of Detrius was another boy, this time named Julian. He was a very sickly child, bedridden for the first five years of his life. He never outgrew his wasting disease, and is chronically pale and emaciated. However, Julian was far from apathetic as a result of his illness. During the years he spent in bed, he learned to read and began other studies. After being taught to read at the age of four, Julian became ravenous for knowledge. He spurned the traditions of his noble familty, having no love for becoming a night and servant of the King. He ran away from home at the age of ten and found refuge in the great library of Alerar. He spent ten years there, absorbing any information he was exposed to, before returning home to live in a small home on the edge of his parent's land. He had no interest the pomp of court life and rarely interacted with his family other than to ask for neccessities.
The third child of the Detrius couple was their first daughter. They named her Jesse, after Lucius' mother, who had recently died of pneumonia. Their only female child, Lucius and Corinna were protective of Jesse to an extreme degree. They raised her with painstaking care at home, then sent her to a convent for a formal education. They sent her with two bodyguards, which was frowned upon by the sisters of the convent, but they made enough of a fuss that they were allowed this priveledge. She grew into a beautiful teenager and was the subject of the love interests of many nobles holding land surrounding Harondale.
The youngest of the Detrius children is the object of our interest. Iain was born a week early, so small that his parents didn't think he was going to survive. However, the infant proved to be more hardy than anyone expected, and grew into a physically well, generally normal child. Iain's parents didn't give him anywhere near the amount of attention and nurture that his siblings recieved, perhaps feeling a little burned out. Iain recieved a full education, in the footsteps of Julian, but also completed the training that William had obsessed over. He amused himself not with these pursuits, but by training birds of prey to hunt and obey his commands. He gained a great amount of respect and knowledge of the feathered world, and his parents rewarded his devotion to his hobby with the gift of his own bird, a kestrel, on his sixteenth birthday. Iain became a knight, just as William did, but he was bothered by the law of the Church of Eternal Sway that since he was a third son, he was not permitted any of his father's land. He would have to set out on his own and make his own fortune. Iain loved his parents very much, and hated the church for making him leave them. He departed Harondale after a bitter parting with his parents, who were dismayed because their son showed outward contempt for the church. Nonetheless, Lucius sent Iain on his way with a gold signet ring to prove his lineage, and the blessing of a father to his son.
Familiar:
Kaul - a Kestrel that Iain was given as a gift from his parents, Kaul has mottled brown plumage and piercing yellow eyes. He was named Kaul because it sounds something like the screech he makes when on the hunt. Kaul and Iain have been together for so long that they have developed a certain empathy; Iain can tell what Kaul is thinking from his body movements and with eye contact, Kaul can understand commands from Iain with only small hand motions or movements of Iain's head.
