Nijin Bosche Otani
04-11-06, 12:05 AM
Updates from Level 2 in red. Level 1 in blue

Given Name: Nijin Bosche Otani // Ehrin Nakama
Rank: Director of the Eudaemonian Empire
Preferred Name: Director Otani (professional), Nijin (friendly, if he has any friends left)
Race: Germanic-Asiatic Human (a mix generally referred in his society simply as Eudaemonian)
Age: 30
Height: 6’2
Weight: 180 lbs
Hair: Black and beginning to go grey before its time (a family trait)
Eyes: Grey, critical, and myopic
General Appearance: Nijin is a relatively slender looking man, most of his weight is well concealed in his torso. His arms and legs are noticeably long, almost stretched looking. At first glance they appear awkward, but he’s learned to move them with a respectable degree of grace. His fingers are similarly long and well articulated. Though he is known to let his nails grow “longer than a man should”, they are by no means unnatural or burdensome. The features of his face are somewhat hollow. His cheeks are somewhat sunken as are his eyes, hidden behind a pair of ornate spectacles that are all but a permanent feature perched on his nose. If pulled directly down his hair would fall just past his nose but it is neatly parted to either side of his face. After his ascension to the position of Director, he wears the appropriate uniform. This consists of a solid black suit with the symbol of the technocracy emblazoned in a gleaming blue-green on the right side of the chest. The buttons are the finest gold studded with diamonds and are accented by a similarly styled pair of cufflinks. When not appearing at formal occasions, Nijin throws back on his old Acolyte’s robe as a matter of comfort.

History:
Born into an undeniable position of privilege, Nijin appears remarkably fortunate to outsiders. History has generally overlooked the conflict he was born into. His father was Nobuo Otani the younger brother of famous researcher Hanaka Otani, a pillar of Eudaemonian society and mother to Acolyte Mephisto. His mother was Rita Bosche, niece of Director Wilhelm Bosche. The Director was the only person to hold that position as leader of the Eudaemonian people until his trusted adjutant, Acolyte Mephisto challenged his authority and sparked the Eudaemonian Civil War. Acolyte Mephisto’s attitude was one of progressivism and changing from the techno-centric attitudes that lead the people of Eudaemonia to leave their home plane and build for themselves a new home through the portal in Beta Space at Architelos. Bosche’s loyal forces were the vast majority with an old guard sensibility that things should be kept as they have been for fifty years of prosperity. Troops from this defense force were dispatched on “routine guard operations” through the portal to Alpha Space where they laid siege to the rebel capital of Transystima. The portal was a magnificent construction which allowed Architelos to remain protected in a little pocket of space time where none but the Eudaemonians who constructed it existed. In this safe haven, Nijin pondered his divided loyalty. His mother and father grew resentful of each other, fighting for the then teenage boy’s affection as their families fought for control of the known world. He focused a great deal on progression through the Eudaemonian Technocracy, a mixture of religion and militarism not seen since the Crusades. Soon after attaining the rank of Acolyte, he pledged his loyalty to his mother’s family in the Hidden War. He forsook his surname Otani in favor of Bosche and insisted that the “traitor’s side” of his family never be mentioned. He asked the aging Director to be given a detachment of troops to end the siege of Transystima once and for all and retake the city. Wilhelm Bosche agreed and Nijin departed on the eve of his thirtieth birthday. The portal looked unusually violent that evening and not without good reason. On the other side, his ideological counterpart destroyed the field coils and destabilized the only link with the Eudaemonian homeland, preferring to give up his claims to power there in favor of the vast reign he would claim over Alpha Space. Nijin emerged bewildered and separated from his troops in the entirely foreign land and plane that make up the world of Althanas. He scrambled together the supplies that had come with him and set off in search of his unit and a way to complete what he believes to be a holy mission to protect the land of his birth.

Nijin has learned that Arius is indeed present in the land where he has arrived. He has joined with two Gamma Spacers, Luc and Futsuriai, to hunt him down and stop him. Some progress has been made toward this goal, and it is becoming exceptionally clear that it is necessary to re-construct the portal to truly succeed.
Nijin met up with Arius Mephisto in a town on the island where he appeared in Gamma Space. The Executor informed him of the various lies he had been told by Director Bosche and he agreed to accompany Arius and his companion Linnea to Architelos to confront the Director. Before they could get far they were apprehended by Bosche’s operative Jordan (see profile below) and brought precisely where they wanted to go, to Bosche’s office. Nijin confronted the Director and learned the truth that he was in fact, not Nijin Bosche Otani at all, but rather Ehrin Nakama, a former soldier of Arius Mephisto during the Alpha Space conflict. He had participated in the burning of Berlin and Bosche had reprogrammed him as a pawn. Nijin snapped and the binding device that he kept his psyche segregated, the Emblem of the Director, shattered. He strangled Bosche to death and erased all records of him in Eudaemonian computers so he could not be re-cloned. Nijin then proceeded to take over his position, filled with a new sense of power and purpose. He rejected his true past and continued to live as Nijin, though his preferred surname is now Otani, despite his dark past.

Equipment:
Cloak of the Chosen: A simple mass-production cloak for officers in the Eudaemonian Technocracy. It offers sufficient protection from cold or wind for a traveler but is nearly useless as a piece of armor. Given extraordinary luck the three thick layers could soften the blow of an arrow that was fired from out of proper range, nothing more. It is grey and rimmed in an aesthetically pleasing blue along the seams.

Director’s Suit: A finely tailored suit of black cloth with matching boots and gloves, gold buttons with inset diamonds and a Eudaemonian symbol on the chest.

Personal Phase Engine SRN-001: A small implant in Nijin’s skull links him to a device originally designed for Director Bosche. It is a prototype of a weapon called the Phase Engine. Its capabilities are described in the skills ‘Phase Engine’ subsection.

Emblem of the Director: A small metal cluster traditionally placed next to the Rank Insigna that is a mark of the Director’s personal charge on a mission of great importance. In Architelos someone wearing this mark would part a crowd by their very presence. In Althanas it’s a cheap trinket with value only for Nijin and his troops (if they’ve even survived). This item was actually a mind control device designed by the paranoid Director Bosche. It was destroyed during Antithesis.

Though Nijin still possesses all the below items, they are stored away and not kept with him.

Rank Insignia: A red glass orb in silver talons about the size of a nickel is placed next to the fastening on the cloak to signify the wearer’s rank as an Acolyte.

Technomantic Staff: A quarter-staff sized cylinder of base metal with no distinguishing features other than inch wide circular socket near the center. It is otherwise solid making it both sturdy and cumbersome in the hands of someone untrained in using an object of its bulk. Nijin has been wielding the staff since he was a child practicing with those belonging to his older cousins. He is skilled in using it both effectively and elegantly.

Red, Green, and Blue Focusing Orbs: These small crystal balls fit into the socket on the staff. Their use is described in the skills section below. Nijin possesses two of each color.
Yellow Focusing Orbs: Acquired during a raid (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?s=&postid=46301#post46301), Nijin possesses a pouch full of these, approximately twenty.

Book of Accord: This book is the foundation of everything Nijin knows and believes. Aside from being a useful philosophical reference, it contains schematics for common Eudaemonian devices from scanners to weapons. Also acquired in the raid.

Broken Scanner: This damaged scanner could detect technology and bio signs at long range, if it worked. Its data storage parts have been repaired and it contains data on how to construct a portal like the one which sent Nijin to Althanas. Also acquired in the raid.

Standard Repair Kit: A repair kit that, if properly used, can return almost all Eudaemonian devices to functionality. It contains numerous replacement parts and tools. Also acquired in the raid.

Technomantic Skills:
It should be noted that all these skills are specific to Nijin. The objects involved are not magical in any way, but merely foci for his Technomantic skill. Nijin no longer uses any of these skills now that he is Director. He no longer possesses his staff and thus cannot perform any of these tasks unless he were to abandon the position and take back his role as an Acolyte

Red Orb’s Warmth: When placing the red focus orb in the slot of the staff, the whole length emanates a warming red light that both lights up a room and slowly heals minor cuts and bruises. It is useless for healing anything a bandage wouldn’t fix, but it does accelerate the mending of wounds that are merely inconvenient. It also provides a useful if eerie source of light for exploring dark areas and traveling and camping at night. Nijin uses it as a substitute for a campfire when on assignment. It requires no concentration to maintain, merely the initial casting time and effort. It can be deactivated at any time at will and as with all the orbs will automatically shut off if someone else wilfully handles the staff. This does not count chance brushes or foes hit by the staff.

Green Orb’s Avarice: When placing the green focus orb in the slot of the staff, it becomes a magnet for all metallic objects, even those not affected by traditional magnetism. Its range and power is exceptionally limited. It could not, for instance, pull a sword from a man’s hand across a room. It could pick up a coin from a foot or so away or hold a sword in a bind long enough that a blow could be parried effectively with the staff.

Blue Orb’s Solace: When placing the blue focus orb in the slot of the staff, it creates an atmosphere of quiet remorse. This has no visible effects over than a faint glow of the orb, but the hearts and minds of those within ten yards of the staff are calmed and saddened. Those willfully aware and willfully resisting the effect are untouched, but most individuals would simply feel a sudden spell of sorrowful emotions. The average person will not be moved to tears or compelled strongly toward any action, but those who are already unstable emotionally or upset can be pushed further into the darkness in their hearts by this subtle effect. The effect is stronger closer to the staff and Nijin himself is unaffected due to his experience with his own power unless profoundly upset already.

Yellow Orb’s Spite: When placing the yellow focus orb in the slot of the staff, the staff crackles with electricity capable of shocking those who touch it. Nijin can shield himself from the electrical discharge and to some degree focus it. If the staff is touching two objects, Nijin decides where the energy flow is sent, for instance. The orb can also be used like a small grenade. If held in the hand and then dropped, it will shoot off numerous electrical discharges before shattering.

Phase Skills
These skills utilize the Phase Engine device which Nijin is linked to through his cranial implant. The Engine itself is stored deep in the maintenance levels of Architelos, far from any immediate danger. Now that Architelos is present in the same dimension as the rest of Althanas, its power can be brought to bear.

Presence: Nijin can exert a presence in the area around any item of Eudaemonian manufacture. As a matter of course, all such devices are imprinted with a special signature which the Phase Engine is attuned to. Nijin is able to receive sensory data as if he were standing next to them. Excellent for spying, it uses a minimal amount of the device’s power. Its only drawback is that it overrides the user’s normal sensory input, so they are completely out of sorts with their actual surroundings.

Metacreation: Nijin can manifest objects out of phased space and manipulate them as if they were normal physical objects. All other matter which comes into contact with them slowly loses cohesion. The decay ranges from rapid deterioration of weak metals akin to melting (steel and below), to slow corrosion of moderate substances, to no noticeable effects on strong items (Delyn and above). The form of the matter Nijin manifests is usually that of a staff similar in proportions to his Technomantic staff for ease of use. He can also manifest small bolts, but they lose their coherence after traveling more than 10 meters, and consume significant amounts of power. Only three can be summoned per day.

Immunity: Nijin and his possessions are immune to the effects of his own phased space manipulations.

Generic Skills

Orb Mending: All the orbs can only be used for a certain period of time before they shatter. They’re made of a very fragile glass and the energy being focused through them gradually wears them away until they crack and break. Nijin is acutely aware of the condition of his orbs and if caught before shattering they can be mended in a few hours of the average wear and tear through intense focus and concentration. If by chance one is shattered it can take days to fully repair.

Basic Repair: After studying the Book of Accord and practicing with the repair book, Nijin is adept at making field repairs to slightly damaged Eudaemonian technology. He cannot return things to full working order, but he can make them functional to some degree given enough time. He aspires to nurture this skill to a point where he can re-construct the Portal.

Staff Practice: As mentioned, Nijin is well trained in the use of his staff both defensively and offensively. He knows standard parries and strikes but possesses no specific “weapon techniques” which have special effects or damage.
