Massacre
03-11-07, 04:15 PM
It was a rather warm day in Knife’s Edge despite how far north the city was. A’rei had overheard a conversation about the public execution of Altrax. It was thirteen days into second moon and there was already talk of his execution, the announcement was posted everywhere apparently. A’rei walked through the streets, slightly lost, to find the gate where the execution would take place. She had heard The Church had creative and new ways of killing people. The stories had frightened her as a child and interested her now, she wanted to see the truth in them.
The streets in Knife’s Edge were rather confusing at first, A’rei was beginning to get the hang of it, and whoever had designed this city didn’t do very well. You could walk down a street filled with life and grandeur and suddenly pop into an area with shacks and odd smells. She had just done such a thing. The slums of Knife’s Edge weren’t as bad as she anticipated; the people seemed cheery despite their harsh living conditions. Just on the other side of the small slum area she could see the grand gate that led to Rathaxea Square. The entrance was heavily guarded and she assumed she wouldn’t be able to get in. That was beyond the point, she just wanted to see the execution while she was in the area. A’rei looked around her immediate area for an inn. After searching for about a minute she found one called The Tail of the Oxen.
What a funny name…
She saw numerous copies of the announcement around the inn and quickly read it for herself.
CP 1801, Second Moon wasted thirteen days
Public Announcement:
By order of Iorlan Rathaxea, King of Salvar, the representative of the Krueg fiefdom named Altrax U’qun has been sentenced to death for crimes against The Church. Altrax has represented Krueg thrice and has served well. However, on First Moon wasted three days, Altrax committed sexual acts with a woman of the trade. The execution is to take place outside the gate to Rathaxea square, upon the high sun, when Second Moon shall be wasted fifteen days.
The Church has announced its ruling; The Monarchy backs it as well as The Parliamentary Directorate. There will be no mercy for violators of the holy law.
Time is due!
It was quite straightforward and to the point, A’rei liked that. A’rei turned and walked into the inn, putting her hood down, letting her hair fall out lightly. She walked quickly over to the innkeeper, “Can I get a room, please?”
“Aye, anything lassie,” The burly innkeeper handed her the key, “ten gold pieces.”
A’rei handed him the gold and nodded slightly. She turned around and walked up the stairs to try and find the room that matched the number on the key; I… II… III… IV, there it is. A’rei placed the key into the proper hole and twisted, hearing the click of the lock. The door creaked open and A’rei walked in, closed and locked the door then headed straight for the bed.
*****
A’rei woke up to unnaturally loud chatter below in the pub. After getting out of the bed and grabbing the key, A’rei headed downstairs to see what was going on. She couldn’t tell exactly what any one person was saying so she headed outside to see the death sentence announcement replaced by a new one.
CP 1801, Second Moon wasted fourteen days
Public Announcement:
The order of The Church has been dishonored. Altrax managed to escape from his holding cell during the night and escaped Rathaxea Square. He is believed to still be somewhere in the city. There is a reward of five hundred gold pieces for the capture and return of Altrax.
Punishment will be delivered to the defiler!
Five hundred gold pieces was enough to motivate a thug to murder and it was enough to motivate A’rei to find some weak politician. Being a slave hunter was easy enough, hunting a politician appears easier. A’rei went to see what information she could dig up, even a rumor could be helpful. The inn was likely to be full of them.
