Kou Clearwater
05-28-07, 09:56 PM
Name: Kou Clearwater
Age: 19
Race: Merca [Sea Dwelling folk]
Hair Color: Medium blue
Eye Color: Misty blue
Height: 6’
Weight: 145 lbs
*Occupation: Messenger
*Personality: Living amongst the peace and tranquility of the waters of Althanas has sewn a personality akin to the aforementioned into Kou’s seams. He’s not much of one to worry or think about consequences either, as he’s too busy stopping to smell the roses or adventuring through the deep blue sea. He sees himself as a free spirit (and admittedly lazy), and it is more than justified by his day dreaming and carefree true blue (no pun intended) poet approach to life. Never the instigator, he’d much rather stay clear of confrontations and violence, and if he was ever on such a slippery slope, he would more likely than not try and talk his way out of whatever mess he had gotten himself into. He’s no coward, though, and if he’s left with no option but to fight, then that’s just what he’ll do.
Appearance: Slim and slender is his figure’s name, from head to toe layered without much fat on his person and a coat of taut muscle. His hair is long, coloured like threads of the ocean, bangs falling around his eyes, sides trickling just beyond his jaw line, and the rest to his collarbone and upper back. His cheeks near his ears are brushed lightly with shimmering sky blue scales, almost identical to the hue of his ocean eyes. His skin is fair, and shimmers like the light of the sun on the surface of the tide. Light blue scales, akin to the ones on his cheeks slither up from beneath his waist line. Suffice it to say that the sea dwelling Merca have their fair share of fish like qualities and pieces making up their appearance. His ears are long and pointed with almost a blue fin edge beginning at the point and running down along the lobe (their length for the anatomic purpose of hearing his native tongue). Crystal blue webbing can be found between his toes and fingers (only between the digits that extend from the knuckles on his hands), along with like coloured fins on his calves. Three wide ‘v’ like lines trace down either side of his neck, serving as gills for when he breathes under water, however his lungs are accustomed to breathing oxygen on the surface as well.
His outfit is composed of a brown scaled leather jacket, fitting against his form snugly, without the ability to be closed over his chest and stomach. Beneath it he wears a golden yellow vest, which, like the jacket, remains open and keeps his chest and upper stomach revealed. It is bound shut only by an X of fabric across the mid abdomen and another band across the bottom hem. His pants are close-fitting grey leather with intricate designs etched into them, as well as tears at the calf for his fins. Overtop both of his shoulders, he wears thin decorated pointed plate armour, which, despite its shiny appearance, is rather old, outdated, and not exactly the strongest. Around his neck lies a long blue threaded necklace that ends just below his chest. On it are two secured fangs of some hunted sea creature and three small white pearls, the necklace itself a gift from his mother. He wears no shoeing of any kind, preferring to walk barefoot.
History: Kou was born the twenty first child of thirty three to a mother and father of social status on neither of the extreme ends. From the moment they could swim against the tide, he, along with his brothers and sisters, tended to their family crops of coral and sea weed from the first waves of the morning, until the sun faded behind the horizon. The boys would help protect against predators, and the girls would cook the food, and once every month, the eldest four boys (including Kou) would travel to the surface to barter, trade, and sell for gold and gadgets that they would give unto their parents. Eat, work, eat, sleep, repeat. Not a day in his life had been an ounce different than any given other. It was predictable, and such mundane monotony infected the youth with the disease of daydreams and a passion for knowing the unknown. As he grew older, he became lax in his chores, spending most of his time wondering what the waters beyond his village held, and what mysteries the dry world contained. Any time he wasn't off in some other world, though, he was counting down the days until he came of age. That day came on his seventeenth birthday, where he wasted no time in taking part in the Merca tradition of leaving home and pursuing his own profession.
Though it wasn't the most lucrative of jobs, he became a messenger, delivering packages and parcels from Merca village to Merca village all across the seas of Althanas. And for the first time in his life, he felt free.
The water wasn’t enough for him, though, and now, with peace restored on Althanas, the lands were a safe place to travel. And travel he did. He currently wanders the dry world, no real destination in mind, and no real goal either, just simply to live, love, dream, and die a man who hasn’t wasted a day in his life. A man who has seen it all. And so far, things are going just as planned.
Skills:
As a member of the Merca race, Kou has gills on the side of his neck, allowing him to breathe under water.
Also, as a Merca (with fins, webbed feet, and living below the surface for the majority of his life), he is naturally more coordinated at movement and swimming underwater, as well as approximately twice as fast as a human.
Kou has basic rudimentary combat skills with a Trident
Aquamancy Lv 0- Kou is able to manipulate water around him to do a variety of different tasks (small bolts of water of bruising, but not scathing level damage [similar to being struck by a fist] | basic movement, in such ways that he could use it to trip up an enemy/pursuer’s steps or spray it in their eyes At this level, though, there isn’t a terrible amount he can do with it, and it takes a great deal of concentration for him to use, more so on land than in the water.
Summon Familiars Lv 0.- With this, Kou is able to summon sea creatures to aide him. On land, this does him no good. And as his current level stands, when in the sea, he can only summon smaller creatures (creatures used for item retrieval: Aquamares, small foot long creatures similar to a Seahorse and Alphites, hand sized fish with elaborate coloured fins. Creatures used for communication: Tidelings, closely resembles the bottlenose dolphin, but around half the size.)
Equipment:
Steel Trident
Canteen
Leather satchel
-Rations
-A compass
-A small camping knife
Brief Description of the Merca Race: The Merca are a race of humanoid sea dwelling people. The only deviations they have from the traditional looks of a human are their webbed fingers and toes, leg fins, long pointed ears, and gills on their necks. Males average a height of 6’ and they are all predominantly lithe framed. The Merca are a race of peaceful people who tend to shy away from dealing with those on the dry surface of Althanas. The Merca people have never once involved themselves in war or conflict, preferring to settle disputes with peace talks. They make their villages out of outcroppings in the sea floors and walls, and typically locate themselves near coral reefs and sea weed fields, which are their two main export crops, as well as food sources. They, like any other fish in the sea, have predators, which typically consist of larger carnivorous fish. Children are born nearly a dozen at a time, so it’s not rare for a family to have upwards of thirty children. They communicate via sound vibrations through the water, much like that of the echo location of dolphins. The language is befittingly translated to Common as 'Echo'
