The Architect

Ha So you fellas want to know who Seti Dylan is? And I’m not talking about the architect from Windlancer. I’m talking about the man Seti Dylan. Do you really want to know? Because I’ll warn you right now that there’s more to him than just his achievements. There’s a personality here, boys, and just like any other personality there’s a chance you may not like that wholesome little guy. He’s just like the rest of us, a king and a vagabond all wrapped in one. Alright fill up your mugs and stuff your pipes right now because it’s going to be a long, albeit turbulent night, and we aint stoppin unless I’ve got an anvil on my bladder.
Appearance
To start off he looks young. Sometimes too young for his own good. At the age of twenty two he looks like he’s eighteen, which is where he got his nickname, something I’m not willing to divulge here. All that goes away when he opens his mouth, but I digress. His look is exotic, which does catch the eye of the ladies every now and then. He’s got bronze brown skin. His hair is black and done into large curls the size of my fist, and his baby face is complimented by a creepy small beauty mark on the right side of his mouth. Now when people think of an architect or an engineer they think of some scrawny little intellectual with over sized glasses and overalls. Seti’s the exception. He’s no Heracles by far, but he’s fit and healthy because he insists on working on the construction site along side those charged with the task of making his vision reality. He knows how to dress without overdoing it, but he’s on the average side of height. About... yae high.
History
Boys, this is the real deal, but instead of going back to the umbilical cord I’ll jump a few chapters and get to the juicy stuff. I’m sure a few of you have a damsel to pursue or something...
The wheels of the envoy’s carriage went in perfect chorus with the horse shoes pulling it on a beaten gravel path. The thin layers of undersized pebbles and over sized rocks made for a slow and turbulent ride that worked a pain on one’s back. If they were traveling through the great plains of the world they would have moved alongside the path where the grass and soil made for a smooth ride with only a small expense in time. Alas they weren’t afforded that luxury. Instead they were in a dense forest where the giant elephant leaves and thick branches reached past the ornate red curtains. Elmira couldn’t help reminisce about past abduction attempts, and the novelty was all but gone. This had been te case for three hours now, but it was better than the bitter cold peaks of the mountains.
The representative knocked on the wall of the carriage with a clear frustration. “How much longer?” she said with a projected tone.
“Not much longer I presume.” a masculine voice from outside sounded off. “By now we should be looking for three minarets positioned to make a triangle from... Wait. I see it. It’s impressive work for someone his age. To think he did this at such a young age is daunting. Elmira, you’ve got to see this from a distance.”
Elmira reached outside and pulled herself out. She twisted to the top of the carriage where the branches would no longer pester her. The three creme white minarets spiraled over the conifer canvas. Now free of the noisy turbulence of the carriage cabin, her ears were now free to take in the sounds of the forest and its civilized inhabitants. In addition to the birds chirping and the insects humming an awkward note she could hear the sound of hammers and saws in the distance. The closer they got to the minaret trinity the more dominant the civilized chorus became in their ears until they finally made visual contact with people for the first time in days.
The emerald curtain of the forest opened up to a scene half done. The envoy stopped atop a natural mezzanine looking down upon a construction site covering more than thirty six square acres. Hundreds of men chanting commands and ques worked like busy ants at the foot of the three towers. From here it was clear that they were the only things complete as priests in ornate clothing convened around the towers. The rest was only a skeleton of the abbey to come in later days. It was impossible to continue by carriage here so Elmira dropped form the carriage as did her apprentice, the driver with a folded portfolio case in his hand. Their armed escort stood at guard as they entered the site.
“So what’s the story on this guy?” the apprentice said as he looked at men much larger than he lifting, pushing, hammering and chopping. “This looks like its going to be a beautiful project.”
Elmira continued on her nonchalant stride and spoke without looking at her apprentice. “Seti Dylan was born and raised in this part of Scara Brae. His father is a well respected engineer who gained recognition by the local powers by solving countless logistical conflicts in the Scar Brae infrastructure. They say you can’t step foot anywhere on the island without seeing his work. His mother is a much loved artist of the performance and visual discipline. She’s been seen in the local theater’s most critically acclaimed shows, and her paintings sell for no less than six figures, which is no small feat given the fact that she’s still alive. I guess you can accredit his current profession and talent to the both of them. Think about it. What is an architect but merely a stylish engineer?”
“You might be right in that assessment.” A masculine voice rung in Elmira’s right ear with strain. The diplomat turned to see the young body that harbored that voice pushing with all its might to move a colossal granite block. There were plenty of helping hands, so Seti Dylan chose leave the rest to the professionals. The young architect broke out of the assembly line of brutes, approached the representative and extended a sweat glazed hand. “Seti Dylan of the House of Sora. You must be the envoy?”
“Yes.” Elmira said as looked at the sweaty hand in disgust. She dared not raise her own. “House of Sora. Where does that name come from? I never saw it in your family name.”
Seti shrugged his shoulders and pulled a towel out of his back pocket. “That’s the name of my development group. We’re a couple of dozen builders, surveyors, and designers, but we’ll build you anything on any scale.” he said with a smile as he wiped his head off. “What’s your name by the way?”
“I am Elmira Doris, envoy of the Tameran Estate in Corone, and this is my apprentice, Ramsey Xell. We’ve come to negotiate a...”
“Ramsey! Seti Dylan of the House of Sora. Pleased to meet you.” Seti approached the fellow and extended his hand for a mutually successful handshake. He spoke again before Elmira could. “So what is your mission here, Ramsey? Is it to negotiate a contract to design and build something? Because if that’s the case as much as I’d really like to help, I’m no longer that much useful here so I can start immediately.”
“That’s good to know!” Elmira said with a raised voice of aggravation. “We’d like for you to design a new borough in Radasanth. You’ll be provided with labor forces and this will be your commission.” Her hand shot out with a small slip of parchment in it. The number was large, but it failed to impress Seti.
The architect looked at the representative with a blank stare for a few lingering moments only to turn back to the apprentice with a smile to continue his negotiation. “I’ll do the job for half this as long as I get a home of my own in this neighborhood free of charge.”
“I’m sure that can be negotiated!” Elmira rolled her eyes and started back towards the carriage with an enraged haste. “Now let’s move! We’ll stop by your residence to get the things you need.”
...and this was pretty much the big break in the architect’s career. Little did the little guy know that this moment was a critical moment in his personal life too. Did it set him back in the personal arena? That’s debatable, but I for one think it did. Anyways there you have it. That was the first day of the rest of the architect’s life.
Equipment
It was a quick trip home. He really didn’t need much seeing as almost everything he needed would be provided in Radasanth. It was an emotional but happy goodbye with the folks. His drafting materials were a necessity, but there were a few items critical to the story. Pay close attention to these.
Lux & Nocte (Twin Swords) - Lux & Nocte have been family blades passed down for generations. These nodachi style twin swords stretch 45 3/4" overall and house two short 36" fully functional swords. Each sword is equipped with 26 1/2" mirror finish steel blades. The shaft which houses the swords is hardwood construction accented with cast metal decorative handles. When sheathed the set can act as a staff or walking stick.
House of Sora Heirloom - This is a genuine sterling silver chain approximately 25" long. The shield shaped pendant on the end is made of the same material. The shield has only one feature on it, a silver depiction of the solar eclipse.
Skills
Oh Yea! Before I forget. Seti’s done so many different things, but they’re all connected to a few fundamental talents.
Intellectual Perception - Through the teachings of his father, Seti has extensive knowledge of geometry, geography, mathematics, and some chemistry. With all this hardwired into his brain he can quickly evaluate his environment regarding these fields of knowledge. His aesthetic talents and his cultivated imagination (from his mother) give him an eye for style and allow him to transfer his visions into his own literal perception.
Martial Skills - Seti is a physically fit young man, but of the cruiser weight distinction. He’s well coordinated, fast on his feet, and strong for someone his size. When it comes to his family weapon Seti is fast with deployment. What he lacks overall is technique.
So there ya have it. Take a deep breath because we’re taking the dive...
