Alaina Varia
24
Salus
5'6” / 120lbs
Short and rather slender, with pale skin and long curly hair. Her hair is black with a blue cast in the sun, reminiscent of the icy blue tones of her eyes. Her features are full, wide eyes and ample lips. The defining feature of the Salus, a deep blue, sparkling mist, hovers around her body when not in use, or being hidden.

(Also, Aiden's history will be changing, so this will differ from his character sheet.)

“Momma?”

Alaina's eyes flicked open at the soft tones of her daughter. She jerked her head towards the young girl and searched her over. God, don't let them hurt my baby.

But, Fate was fine. Alaina was sitting in the corner of the cell, and the innocent child knelt in front of her, a hand on her shoulder. Alaina cleared her throat and rubbed at her temple. “What is it, pumpkin?” Alaina straightened her legs, and Fate took her normal place in her mother's lap.

“How did you meet daddy?” The question, full of such innocence and disregard for their current position, caught Alaina off guard. She giggled slightly, a delicate but dirty hand reaching up to cover her face.

“Where did this come from, sweety?” Alaina pushed the hair back from Fate's eyes, and marveled at their beauty. No matter how many times she was told the child looked just like her, Alaina still saw much more beauty in that naïve face. Her innocence was refreshing.

“I dunno, I'm just curious.” Fate tilted her head down and smiled, blushing a little. Alaina was always amazed at the young girls ability to ask questions, and Fate knew it. Sighing, and leaning her head back against the cold brick wall, Alaina thought.

“Well, I met him in the very town I grew up in.”

Fate's little eyebrows narrowed. “Where was that?”

Alaina smiled. “Far from here. In Dheathain. Me and my people lived there.”

“You mean the Salus?”

Alaina nodded. “You're half Salus too, sweets.” Alaina pinched the little girl's cheek lightly and smiled once again. “I lived there with my mother, your grandmother. I lived in a huge house with high ceilings and marble floors.” Alaina raised her arms up high, and widened her eyes slightly to demonstrate the size of the house. Fate grinned, a sparkle in her eye. “The town I lived in was beautiful. Greenest grass you'll ever see. Blue skies and beautiful homes and shops. The only ugly thing there are the Salus themselves.”

Fate gasped slightly. “But momma, you're a Salus! I think you're very pretty.”

Alaina smiled warmly at her daughter. “Most Salus are pretty ugly on the inside.” Alaina poked the center of the girls chest lightly to punctuate her point. “Though they all are very pretty on the outside.”

Fate nodded to express that she understood, and Alaina resumed her recollection. “Your father, though he wasn't your father yet, just a man.. He was passing through town. Just a traveller from far away. He seemed so interesting to me. I'd never been out of my town and just the look of him was exotic he-”

Fate stumbled in, eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “Exotic? What does that mean?”

Alaina smiled at her daughter's thirst for knowledge, so comparable to her own. “It means he was different. He just seemed alluring in that he was from so far away and knew so many different things than I did. I think it was his hair that caught me first.”

Fate giggled and nodded. “Daddy has funny hair.” Alaina nodded and smiled, remembering first seeing her husband's messy, dread-locked hair.

The sight of the man came as a surprise to Alaina. Never before had she seen someone so incredibly strange looking. His skin was as dark as caramel, and his eyes were the color of emeralds. His features were fierce, and in conjunction with his wild mane of hair he reminded her of a lion, ready to strike should the situation call for it.

She stood, unmoving, at the steps of the library she'd just walked out of. Everyone in town stared, though none so obviously as her. In her peripherals she noted all of the eyes casually tilting towards the man, and subsequently flicking away. This wasn't a town that was used to strangers, or took lightly to them.

Standing, on the edge of gawking and with her arms full of books she watched him walk by to the Inn. His long dim yellow coat swished behind his tall frame. He seemed dangerous. Alaina was interested.

Scurrying off the steps of the library, Alaina turned and ran down the street towards home.

“Why weren't the Salus more nice to daddy?” Fate said, interrupting her mother's reverie.

“Because, generally, the Salus aren't nice to anyone. They keep to themselves mostly, and expect other's to just cower at their feet. That's what I meant about them being ugly inside.”

Fate nodded, and Alaina resumed. “Well, I ran home and packed just a few small things, and left a note for my mother. I'd been dying to get out of that town for the longest time, and was convinced your daddy would be willing to take me under his wing. He wasn't as willing as I'd hoped, however.”

Alaina sat on the steps of the Inn for hours, waiting for the man to come back out. She clutched her little knapsack in her arms, her sword, given to her by Zane, was strapped to her back. She sat, tapping her feet both impatiently, and anxiously. She was so excited at the prospect of leaving, but in truth, the man scared her a little.

A door creaked open behind her, and she flung her head around, raven curls flying. The stranger was rushing out of the Inn, belt still undone, holding his trench coat in one arm, and attempting to balance his sword and pack in the other. Alaina smiled as warmly as she could at the odd site. He didn't even look at her, merely rushed past, muttering an apology when his shoulder bumped hers.

The confusion only grew when the owner of the Inn, a tall broad man with blonde hair and a fierce look banged through the doors, yelling incoherently at the man.

“NEVER RETURN!” were the only words Alaina could make of his rambling, spitting speech. Her eyes widened, and she followed after the man, running to keep up with the fast walk his long legs were producing.

“Excuse me!” she shouted.

The man glanced back at her, then flicked his head back around in a mess of dread-locks and began trying to fling his coat around him with one hand. “What?”

“I'd like to travel with you,” she said. She flinched at the quavering tones of her own voice. She was scared, and it annoyed her.

The man laughed, and that annoyed her more. “Why?” His words came out more like spit than articulation. His voice was deep and rough as sandpaper.

“Because I'd like to leave, and you seem like you've been places.”

The man stopped so suddenly that Alaina almost ran into him when he turned on his heel to face her. She was caught by surprise, not realizing until now how extremely tall this man was. Alaina could stare straight forward, if she wished to make eye contact with his chest. He peered down as she stopped abruptly and squeaked in utter bewilderment.

The man bent slightly, like a father scolding a young child. His teeth were gritted together as he spoke. “Why would I want you trailing along behind me?”

Alaina stepped back and glared up at him. “It's not as though I'm useless, you know. I have a bit of sword skills, and I have this!” Alaina pulled a heavy pouch of gold from the pocket of her black trench coat and all but threw it at the mans chest. He caught it before it fell to the ground and looked down at it like someone would look at a bug on their shoe.

“I don't want your money,” he said. He dropped the coin pouch at her feet and leaned in closer. “And I highly doubt,” he paused for effect, and stared at her long red dress, laughing. “I highly doubt you have sufficient swordsmanship to even survive next to me.”

Alaina's face turned bright red with anger as the man turned on his heel again, and began walking away. She bent down and grabbed the money, then reached into the slit of her dress, pulling a knife from the clip at her thigh. Aiming quickly and sloppily, she flicked the knife at him. It stuck hard into the dirt just next to where his boot landed in step. He stopped abruptly and peered down at the tiny glint of silver. Crouching, he grabbed the handle and tugged lightly, grunting when his hand slipped of the handle. The knife hadn't moved. Laughing this time, he grabbed it tightly and pulled. A hand on his knee, he pushed himself back up to stand. Alaina rested her hands on her hips, the coin pouch buried away in her coat once more. The man turned, tossing the knife up, and catching it back in his hand.

“Alright, you can come.” He laughed and handed the knife to her. Alaina did her best to hide her joy.

“Daddy wasn't very nice to you,” Fate said.

“No, not at first. Mommy and daddy didn't get along very well in the beginning.”

“But he let you travel with him.”

“Yes,” Alaina started, “and after awhile of being around each other we started being nicer. Then a little while after that we got married and had you and your brother.” Alaina looked down at her beautiful daughter, and smiled. “After that, we lived happily ever after.” She giggled, and then looked around at the dark, dank room she sat in. “At least we'll continue to do so, once daddy comes and saves us..”

[ Will be continued in Saved, a quest with Darkstorm ]

[ Skills ]

Basic Swordsmanship – Alaina doesn't have much field practice, but she knows the basics of how to handle a sword from the classes she took as a child.

Thermo manipulation – Alaina can raise a temperature to the point where it can cause moderate burns, or lower it to the point where frost starts to appear and liquids freeze gradually. Affects only a small area, heating/cooling most at the core.

Mist – A dark blue mist, reminiscent of the night sky, normally hovers around her body. The mist can be formed into a shield, blocking a small portion of her body. The shield holds for about ten minutes, before Alaina has to let it go, and rest. The mist can also be formed into wings, allowing Alaina flight for a short amount of time before needing to rest.

[ Equipment ]

Six steel daggers, three on each thigh.

One steel short sword.

All right, I want you to put a limit on how big an area your Freeze/burn technique can cover (not too much, because it's really two different spells), and I need you to say that she can't fly with her wings. Gliding or hovering for 15 seconds is fine, 30 seconds if it exhausts her. I need you to limit the mass of the objects she can create, too -- I'd say 20 pounds is good if she can't manipulate where it goes, and 5 if she can.

Also...do you want to put her daughter in as an NPC, or will the daughter be another character?

The spell really is one spell. Just the ability to manipulate temperature as I've edited. And the mist doesn't form into an object with mass. It's still mist. It's still weightless. She can't like, form it into a hammer and beat someone with it. It's more like armor. I'll edit that it's about the strength of steel, if you like.

And about the wings.. My friend's character (Kylie (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=5685)) got approved with ease with this description:
"Flight - Kylie's wings allow her to fly a short distance above the ground, although as her flight muscles and wings aren't fully developed, she can only do so for a short period before tiring."

Hovering for 15 seconds is hardly comparable to a jump. I could have made her with boring old angel wings and gotten full flight.

We don't allow full flight at Level Zero. Period. Boring old angel wings, translucent little fae wings, sparkling blue mist wings...no full flight at level zero. I have never seen it done except for a minotaur's NPC Tinkerbell-sized fairy.

Tell me what your wings can do, and I'll let you have the mist be armor at about the equivalent of iron strength for three minutes before exhausting her, since full body armor is a LOT a level zero.

I also need to know how powerful your thermomanip. ability is at this level, since I can't allow you to incinerate or freeze someone (or really do more than mild burns and some frostbite) at Level Zero.

Your skills are allowed to get stronger and broader as you level up, so I'm not limiting you to being weak forever.

I'm not asking for full height, long range flight. Just flying a few feet off the ground for a short time. Hovering five inches from the ground for half a minute before collapsing into exhaustion just seems extremely low level.

And her thermomanipulation already only affects a small area. I can make it even smaller if you wish. I'm not asking for anything terribly powerful, just a small contained area of heat or cold.

"Arcane Blast - When fire just won't work a blast of pure magic will. Energy leaps out from Xos, and creates several minor explosions no bigger than a gold coin. As Xos levels up this spell becomes stronger and manifests diffrently."

If someone can get away with creating several minor explosions, surely I can get away with a little bit of fire and frost? The spell would concentrate on the center, meaning the center of the area would get the most heat/cold, and fade out from there.

With the shield. It's not full body armor, all the time. At the moment it will just cover a small portion of her body, temporarily. I'd say she could hold it up for a moderate amount of time, and it would have the strength of iron or steel (meaning some blasts would get through). A starter character could, surely, have an iron shield that would do even more, as holding a shield doesn't exhaust a character near as much as Alaina's magic would do.

You can have a shield at iron strength for a moderate amount of time, say ten minutes.

And I'm not asking for how BIG the spell is, I'm asking for how STRONG the spell is. For instance: if manipulating the temperature to HIGHER than normal temperatures, at best she can cause an opponent mild burns. If manipulating the temperature to LOWER than normal temperatures, she can cause mild frostbite.

Your wings can take you no higher than 5 feet for thirty seconds.

Until you make those edits, you are not and will not be approved. I didn't approve Kylie, but if you cooperate, I will approve you. If you don't cooperate, I won't.

Edited as asked.

Oh, and by the way.. Fate will be another character.

All right, approved.

Welcome to Althanas. We have two optional forums for beginning characters, The Peaceful Promenade and Scara Brae, but it sounds like you know exactly how you're starting off.

You also have a three hundred line of credit at the Bazaar (http://www.althanas.com/world/forumdisplay.php?f=16), but that expires in a month, so spend it soon.

Have fun and good luck.
