View Full Version : Magnetic strength measuring.
I have so many questions, so many indeed. This latest one concerns Xos's magentisim spell.
Does anyone know of a way to accuratly measure the strength of a magnet, or a magnetic field in such away that even the simplest of simpletons can understand it?
The spell is supposed to rise in strength each level, but I honestly don't know too many degrees of magnetic strength. I don't want to jump from common refriderator magnet to to Laboratory supermagnet, that's just wrong on so many levels. Can anyone think of a way I can accuratly raise the strength of magnetism without going overboard?

probably the best way to do it is to have the power measured by the items it can affect.
Like at level one is can pull a dagger sized object that is not secured, at level two it can pull a sword and attempt to snatch a metal object of dagger sized and so on and so on.
That's a good idea, and I'll probably do something along those lines. I read up about Tesla units but they didn't help any. Science has way to many parts of magnetisim to measure.

My character has the ability to manipulate electromagnetic fields. It sort of grew out of his lightning-oriented magic.
Simply, I just explain the breadth of his power as an observer would understand them - no one in Althanas is going to understand definable metrics of true magic, so you may be served better with a qualitative distinction.
And while that is what I'm going to do, eventually it just seems like it would be easier to say 10 Gigateslas rather than scare everyone with "Is lethal within 1000 KM." Not that I'm going to take it that high, I mean, ten gigateslas is the strength of a Magnetar, and those only exist in deep space. A Magnetar is a Neutron Star with an Extremly powerful Magnetic Field.
Besides that, taking into account Xos's history and that he's used to speaking in science, he would know what amount of power he could muster with a single use of the Magnetisim spell. Oh well, I guess I'm just trying to make it overly complicated for no good reason.
While I have everyone's attention, eventually I'm going to need to have him research things ICly, if I'm ever going to get around to building really awesome things no one's ever seen ICly before. Would that be done like a solo quest and each post is documentation of things Xos did during his research? Or is there some other way of having legitimate IC research to back up my super cool neato machines later on?
