So, I need advice. How is research done? I'm going to be able to do really cool things later on if someone can help me now. I want to have a good solid IC research basis for everything I come up with, such as the Ether Guns. It just feels wrong to suddenly say I can make them, I want to have a backround through the levels for my cool new things. But, is Research is done like a soloquest, or what? Do I make posts detailing how Xos experiments or studies everything? should I just leave as something assumed in the backround? what?

well it's your choice really. You can have a solo thread that is research though it can get dull. Also background research is a good idea too, it's probably easiest. Also for some really juicy knowledge I recommend an adventure to get access to it, like finding a lost library with info and have things that you learn how to make as spoils from other quests. Anything is fine as long as you don't powergame or be lazy about what you write, just do what's the most fun for you.

Yes, but you gotta realise, I enjoy reading technical manuels and heady complex scientific textbooks. Your definition and my definition of boring are probably two very diffrent things. I could do a soloquest research thread where each and every post is 10,000 words, and is well over 20 posts, each one filled with needlessly complex scientific sounding mumbo jumbo only half of which has any real basis in fact.

well if you enjoy writing it then it's worth it^^

though the judges might not like it but I think having fun is before score and pleasing the judges but that's important too. The best would likely be a compromise, have some technical stuff mixed in but keep everything interesting.

Well, ok.

If I were you, I'd do a quest for some sort of lost library as Daggertail said, and then request X amount of knowledge on subject Y for spoils.

Just my two cents.

And I'll probably do part of it that way, but a lost library should only hold so much information, before I begin to think that all of Althanas was once very advanced before something happened.

Xos--you're approaching your Character's skill system in pretty much a similar way to how I am approaching both of mine. All though my system I'm using is basically based off my RPG I'm working on. ^_^ Daggertail offers a valid solution but Solo Quests can be difficult to complete on your own. My suggestion is coming up with a coherent plan (Make it even a part of the Character's Skills sets) of how your Character learns. That would be an idea first step. From there try to chart out the specific stuff you want your Character to learn and approach it like that. Remember--Althanas' technology isn't necessarily scientifically advanced in -normal- terms. But older players have established advanced tech races (Such as Neosaim Hyakureiki back in the day I fellow I used to rp with regularly) that have towns hidden all around Althanas. Come up with a concept. Neosaim used advanced bio-mechanical Golems that basically functioned just like magitech machines.

I would also suggest doing your quest with a couple of other people. That way you can establish background because it tends to be easier to share information amongst other players and you don't have to necessarily do all the creating on your own. There's an old library somewhere on the outskirts of Corone that you might use as a basis to start with. Its more towards the mountain regions I used to use it in my stories a lot. Anyway man plan out your basic ideas and work it from there. If you are going to make a quest of some sort count me in. My Character is a Psionic and maybe that can help you out somehow.

Oh, I've been thinking about it for awhile, and, the book that originally brought Xos here to Althanas, if you read my profile you'll know his history, I'm going to find it again. I'm going to go find a special library, a library that's VERY old, and exists in a special place ordinary people cannot access.

I'm going to go to Merlin's Library and obtain the Tome of the Ancients. It was the very same book Xos was reading. A number of Magi, including Merlin himself, came up with a number of intresting theories regarding the combining of Magic and science, and outlined all sorts of ideas.

Most of them are only half-baked and full of holes, but to a nerdy wizard like Xos, their a solid basis of future plans.

After I get to level one, I'll go on the quest, and will require assistance from others. Who knows what you'll find in Merlin's Library, perhaps a scroll detailing King Arthur's skills? any aspiring master swordsman would love to get their hands on that. Theres bound to be many interesting things in Merlins Library.

Sounds interesting all though I'd suggest re-naming people. There are elder magi around from before the War of the Tap. If you look at the Althanas Almanac and the Althanas history it should spark some really neat ideas for you other than using Merlin and King Arthur. But yeah you're right a place like that could definitely have some interesting stuff. When you're ready to do a quest I'd be more than willing to help you out dude.

i'd be up for that too, Thorn is about to start his magic useage!

And what better place to go than the library of the most famous spellcaster of all time? Thorn's bound to run accross a Tome or two he could really use.

But, make sure that wich people find is within Reason. Something their Character could actually use. Just because a Tome detailing how to destroy Gods with Impunity is there, doesn't mean it needs to be read.

There are three stages to the Journey so far. First, we go to The Great Glass Desert, in the Winter Time. In the Summer its so hot the sand melts into Glass. In its center we find The Tower of Neverending Winter, a Tower so cold, even in Glass Desert's summertime its still frozen solid. At its top we find the impossible Hall, which leads to Dimension X, in its center is The Library, protected from those who would plunder its treasures by The Monster from dimension X! Think Cthulu on this one, only worse.

Then in The Library there will be more challenges, such as a Trial by Fire from our own consiences.

That sounds like an interesting idea since none of my characters have ever really done anything with Fallien before. The only thing I'd tell you at this point is probably not to go overboard with the monsters. All though we could use some sort of clever tactics to defeat certain thing a high level creature like a Cthulu would probably wreck up our puny level 0's and level 1's ^_^. That's just a thought. Consider maybe watering down some of the monsters and traps and things make them hard, but not like impossible to surpass you know? Aside for what my character will be getting later on (And I'm only speaking for my own character) Alberdyne's just a puny human for right now. A little clever than most but that's just about it. But in general though I like the idea and you're off to a great start putting it together. I'll contact you a little bit later so you can add stuff for my Character in there someplace.

The monster from Dimension X isn't meant to be beaten, only temporarily stunned. If it was beaten then who would guard the Library?

I need the power of electricty first and the ability to Crystalise magic. Thus the need to wait until I'm level 1
