View Full Version : Server Instability?
Is it just me or does Althanas fail to load pages at points. I mean, I've been trying to access the forums for a while today and at points, I've just given up because I'd have to hit the refresh button so many times to get a page to load. I always get an error.
Is this just isolated to me or does this happen to anyone else here too? I mean, I know that my Internet connection isn't poor when it's connecting to other websites quite fine and quite quickly too.

I had the same problem, first 'forums' stopped working when I clicked on it, then User CP, then the whole website was down, I was getting server time outs and I was getting page not found errors for sometime until I was getting a 'Database error'.
Hear, hear. I've been having the same problems as well. At first I thought it was just my screwy connection, but apparently it isn't so. Serilliant or Santh could have an explanation for this, as they're in charge of the server maintenance thingy.
Okay, great, so I'm not the only one. I was pretty curious as to why there weren't that many threads (I guess people couldn't get on the forums to make one, har har har).

I imagine the database crashed, but that's my personal opinion, because if the website runs off SQL, which I expect it does using so many funky features, then the whole site itself would just go "Bleh."
The website just couldn't handle my return. Plain and simple.
(I've been having the same problem too...)

well, if we are on the brink of yet another crash, i have the all posts of all people in all my quests saved on my computer. So at least those threads will be able to return in their original form.
EDIT: But I trust our admins to make sure that doesn't happen again. :D
I was wondering why the site's been acting funny for the past couple days. Good thing it's not just me, my computer has enough problems already.
Hopefully whatever it is will be fixed.

I'm sure there are precautions enough in place to avoid major losses in the event of another crash. Besides, I'd wager that the chance of that actually happening is pretty small. This seems like a minor incident to me; I've seen it happen from time to time over the life of the site.

I, for one, haven't had such problems. I guess I'm just lucky or something. Do yall notice specific times when this happens the most, or is it mostly random? Is it all of the links, or just a couple at a time? Does entering the url manually work?
It's our host updating their servers in some way.

Good.^^ Now everyone can stop wigging out about it. Still, it's always a good idea for everyone to save the char profiles and threads that they really want to keep in case the world ends and Althanas crashes. I keep all of my things on a flash drive.
Lol, talk about redundant. Everyone probably does the same thing.
Nope, I just keep them saved on my hard drive.
I've been archiving my stuff pretty much ever since I started writing on Althanas. I have all my threads saved on my hard drive and I periodically archive them on a CD. I didn't start doing it because of the crashes, though. I simply like to keep records of what I've written. I wouldn't worry about another crash, however. From what I could gather, we take much better care of site maintenance nowadays then we did before.
EDIT: Also, another problem I've been encountering. Sometimes, when I click on a thread or something on Althanas, the browser just stands there, saying "waiting for Althanas" and not really doing anything. After re-clicking two or three times the page usually loads, but that delay gets annoying sometimes. At first thought it was my connection, but I have no problems with other sites and I encountered the same problem on a different computer, with a much faster connection.
Yeah, that happens to me too.
I feel pretty bad for GUA, losing all those posts, especially the RPing ones. My advice to everyone is the same as its always been - write everything you post here (or anywhere else) in MS Word or some other word processor program and then just cut/paste it over here. That way, you'll always have a backup in case something happens.

Man, I feel bad for myself. :D
