View Full Version : Baby Naming
I read in the news that a couple in New Zealand wants to name their baby Superman, after "4Real" got rejected by the government.
The question to you then, is this: when it comes to naming kids, do you think you'll be conservative and pick a common name, or try to be a little quirky and want to name your child something that stands out?

Ill probably name my kids after significant people in my life, or at least, that is always what I had in mind. I guess it all depends on who I marry.

Yeah, I read about that a month ago on another forum I'm a part of.
Godforbid, but if I ever am the father of a little Elijah, I'm going to push to have him named Justin Bailey (first and middle).
In my wishfully perfect world, my wife would think that's a cute name, until she found out where exactly it was from--and what that name did. ;)
I dunno what I'd call a girl, but I'd definitely call a boy Andrew. I love that name.

It wouldn't matter if I had a boy or girl the name will be Rowen. (Gotta love the unisex names^^) The middle name for the little bugger still eludes me though.

All depends what I feel would work. Artifex might work, but so could Mike. All depends when I get to that point.

If I have a boy, I'm going to name him after my uncle howard. He was a very significant man in my life and I refuse to let his name die with him.

I pity young Superman.
I don't want super common names, but I don't want anything super outlandish either.
Names I like for girls: Stella after my Yiayia, with Sophia as a middle name, Athena, and Bianca. I kinda like Annunciata as a middle name.
....I may have put a little too much thought into this.
For boys: Gianni is cool. There's several Johns in my family, so Gianni is a nice alternate version of the name. Ilias as a middle name, and Nicholas, after my brother. If it seems like too many names to think about...it probably is, but I've always liked names and their meanings. Every name I mentioned is after someone in my family, so it'd be nice to kinda put them together.
I might name a daughter Jadzia. Call it too Trekkish of me, but I really think it's a pretty name.

I'm not sure putting them all together would make that child happy. :P

naming a kid Superman would be almost as bas as planning to give birth on February 29th >.<
for me, i tend to like the more traditional names...but in the end, it will depend a lot on my husband's thoughts

Look, I'm all for unique names, but sometimes parents just go too far. I mean, 4Real? What the hell kind of name is that? It actually surpasses Frank Zappa's daughter, Moon Unit, and I never, ever thought I'd see the day I found something worse than that. Thank god the government steps in sometimes, because some of these names can't be seen as anything more than child abuse. I swear, all human beings should have to swear some credo before they're allowed to procreate: "Our children are not amusing social experiments." >_>;;
Anyway, I've always liked the name Catherine for a girl. Not determined to name a daughter that, but ever since I read Wuthering Heights I thought it was nice. Haven't really given any names much thought beyond that. I don't like the idea of any name involving a "Jr." or "the Second" or anything like that. I'm not vain enough to want my sons to be named after me.

It'd be Temmy for a boy, Azriella for a girl. Simple. ^_^

Simply put, I prefer names with good meanings than names that will stand out from the crowd even after 2,000 years of misuse. >.<
For my baby girl (adopted or otherwise, whichever comes first), she will be named Sakura. Yeah, super-lame-and-generic-Japanese-name. But the name carries a good message. For a boy, probably Gon. The Thai meaning is "Hand" just so you know. :)
I'm not picky when it come to names, but I am picky about their meanings, Nya~ :p
Obviously I'd name my kid Madison Jr, after his father.
For me, I chose names based on the meaning of them.
For example, my daughter Arianna Skye. It means something along the lines of "Holy water giver"
Or if I ever have I son, he'll be Malachi Aiden. "My messenger, fiery one." or something like that.

I have a friend who was born on February 29th.

Studies have shown that people with outlandish names are many times less likely to get hired by respectful employers. I feel especially sorry for the children given names such as 'Preserved Fish', 'Donald Duck', and 'Harry Bottoms'. That's just not right and a testimony to many severe cases of cruel humour.
I do believe that names share a connection deeper than a mere title with the people who bare them...and if I were ever to name a child, it'd probably be more along traditional lines than nought.

My first daughter will be named Raiaera Elizabeth. If my husband doesn't like it, well all I have to say is "tough titty said the kitty when the milk ran dry." XD Other names for daughters I'd like are Iris Evangeline and Ashleigh Noel ((which was almost my name.))
For sons, I've always liked the name Silas, but considering I'll lose my awesome last name when I'm married, I'll probably name my first son Logan. I like the names Erik, Jack and Paul too. Middle names for boys have always come a little harder for me, so I MIGHT ask my husband's input. =P Might. If he's good and gives me foot rubs while I'm preggers.

Having an extremely common first name paired up with a middle name that everyone with the first share in common, I plan on giving my children slightly uncommon but not outlandish names.
If I ever have a little girl, her name will be Rhosyn or Ashlyn, the former because I've always loved the name, and the latter because it's a variation of my best friend's name, and she's very important to me. The middle name will be either Leigh in either case. For the boy, I really like Zane, Vincent, and Dante. Zane is a name I decided on when I was ten, and I hav no clue as to why. Vincent, although rather common, has always been a favorite, made doubly so by my fiance, as that's his name. And Dante because I absolutely loved Dante's Inferno for most of my highschool years. I can't decide on middle names for either one.
As for cruel and unusual names, with one of my uncles having once been an obstetrician, I have heard of some really bad ones. He told me this one story where this obviously uneducated woman had a baby girl. When she saw the bracelet on the baby's wrist, she thought the doctors named her baby for her. Her name? Female (pronounced Fa-mall-ee) Jones... He didn't have the heart to tell her otherwise, because she was so pleased with the name. There was also a little girl name Ita Ata Peacock. There were a lot more names that he told me about, but that's all I can remember.
As for unfortunate names belonging to people I know, one of my professors was named Harry Head. I could not call the name Professor Head for the life of me. And down the road from me is a guy name King Cummings III. I'm not kidding, that's his name. The fact that two others with the same name have preceded him scare me. He also has a son named Richard Cummings. Not so bad, until you realize his nickname is Dick. Luckily, no one calls him that but his father.

My best friend is majoring in nursing, and her mother was a nurse for several years. Her mom once told us that a woman who'd just had a baby was looking through some pamphlets at the hospital. She was not at all well versed in English, and while looking, she saw the word "vagina."
And decided it sounded so pretty, it was going to be the name of her daughter.
Poor, poor child.

I have a son named Aidan Scott -- he lives up to his name wholeheartedly. He's very very fiery, and the name Scott comes from a guy that he now seems to want to be like (the boy died when I was 18 and I promised to name my firstborn son after him).
I love the name Rowan Patrick for a boy. For a girl, Madeleine Claire (Madeleine after my fave author Madeleine L'engle).

For a girl, I like Alexis, personally.
I don't have a clue what I'd name a boy.

I've always liked Aryeh, for a male name. Hebrew, for lion.
Brad and I have both boy and girl names picked out already.
Boy:
Eric Zahrael (We like Zahrael a lot, but don't want the kid to get teased, so we figured he could go by Eric at school, if he likes)
Zachary Chad (Chad is his brother's name)
Girl:
Andralynn May (We argued over how many N's to put at the end.. He won.)
Stormy Jade
We have a few more as well (Gavin Ware.. Ware is my grandfather's middle name), but I don't know how many children he expects me to have x.x
