Augustus
08-12-07, 12:01 AM
Name: Augustus Gregory
Age: 30
Race: Homo neanderthalensis (Neanderthal).
Hair Colour: A light shade of brown, with some ginger speckled through it.
Eye Colour: A murky blue that is almost grey.
Height: 5’5”
Weight: somewhere around the 70 kg mark.
Occupation: Swagman (in other words, unemployed)

Personality: Augustus is a laconic sort of person. He never speaks unless he has to, and even then it is only a few words. Many people take one look at him and decide that he is primitive, but few realise just how intelligent he is. Most people’s opinions of Augustus are reinforced by his dislike of cities and large crowds of people, seeing him instead as an inbred country bumpkin with no appreciation for the finer things in life.

On strange thing about Augustus is his temper. In his entire life he has never shown anger at any insult, no matter how grievous it was or how many people jeered at him. At times he has shown a dislike for the person/s who have been tormenting him but he has expressed himself using sarcastic comments that leave no room for an opponent to manoeuvre.

Appearance: Augustus differs from normal humans in several ways. For example, Augustus’ nose is broader and more projecting nose than a human, and he has an Occipital bun at the back of his head. Heavy brow ridges, a protruding mid-face and the lack of a chin mark Augustus as being different to humans.

If his face didn’t tell you that he wasn’t human, the rest of his body would. At first glance you can see that he has been built more robustly than a human. Dense muscle covers his short body and his limbs have a different shape to ours. Round finger tips, a long collar bone, barrel shaped ribcage, large knee caps and short, bowed shoulder blades are obvious, as are his short shinbones and calf bones.

History:

Augustus was born into an ever shrinking community on a small island off the coast of Salvar that refused to interbreed with humans. Luckily for him, Augustus was one of the last to be born that was not inbred. His parents were great intellectuals, and this is no doubt why Augustus was not inbred like the majority if the population.

His mother taught Augustus as much as she knew about mathematics, botany and alchemy, while his father taught him how to fight. Surprising almost everyone, Augustus proved to be equally adept at both and continued to learn everything that he could, his brain soaking up things like a sponge. Everyone on the island was undoubtedly happy, but alas, it was not to be.

One winter, violent storms whipped the island and by the end of that terrible winter there were few left alive, the other having been swept out to see or having died from starvation when their food stocks were destroyed. Deciding that they might as well move to a place where they could live without the fear of those storms occurring again, Augustus’ parents moved to the mainland.

His parent did rather well, once they became accepted by the human population, and things looked up for Augustus. He enjoyed a reasonable life and soon became the cities’s boxing champion due to his massive strength and stamina. This made him a lot of enemies and they began to spread rumours about him.

One day, however, he was attacked by a group of youths. At first they pelted him with stones and he ignored them, but then one rushed at him with a carving knife. Three seconds later, Augustus dropped his arms to his side and watched as the body of the youth whom he had just killed slide to the ground. Things went very quite, but then the other youths ran. Augustus ran too, back to his house to prepare an escape.

Since that day, Augustus has been roaming the world of Althanas, never staying in one place, always moving on. Sometimes he will stop for a few months and get a job, but he inevitably leaves before he can get too attached to anyone from that area.

Skills:

Augustus has several skills that he is proficient in. This first is using a spear. Despite his short height, Augustus uses a five-foot spear tipped with a 40 centimetre blade with startling skill and proficiency, more often than not as a bladed quarterstaff than as a thrusting weapon.

A second skill that Augustus has is his ranged skill. He can use a plumbatae with reasonable accuracy that allows him to kill small game at a distance of twenty metres and can throw the dart so hard that it can penetrate full plate armour at a distance of five metres.

Finally, Augustus has an uncanny knack of surviving. Having overcome his gag reflex, he can eat just about anything, and there isn’t many edible plants that he doesn’t know about. Also, few people have ever had the opportunity to try and kill Augustus, as he seems to have an uncanny sense as to where any attackers are. The actually reason is that Augustus has a photographic memory for sound and, when coupled with sensitive ears, he can hear an opponent draw his/her weapon and can follow their path.

Equipment: Augustus’ equipment is plain and simple. He has a quiver of twenty plumbatae on his back (basically arrows with a long metal shaft and a lead weight at the end of the metal shaft), a sharp kukri on his left hip and an equally sharp dagger on his right. He carries his spear in his left hand and also has a oilskin backpack that contains a change of clothes, a tinderbox and various small tools. A canvas swag is also tied to one side of the backpack so that it doesn’t hinder his ability draw a plumbatae or use his spear.

Notes: As a Neanderthal, Augustus has several distinct advantages over humans. To be fair to people, I will list them here.

1) Superior strength: Neanderthals are stronger than all humans, roughly 1.5 times as strong.
2) Superior reflexes: The large occipital bun at the back of Augustus’ head allows more of his brain to be devoted to motor functions, meaning that Augustus has reflexes 1.5 times that of a human.

Mmkay. I'm going to grant the survival skill as it is, but ask you to define his uncanny sense in accordance to attackers before I approve it.

Also, with his weapons skills, I need you to make him slightly above average with one and average with the other.

His plumbatae can be made of steel with lead weights, and I'm gonna say that piercing full plate mail at almost 100 feet is way too strong for a level zero. Maybe in a level or two, but for now, I'm going to ask you to make it so that it can't pierce full plate except within five meters, and only of steel strength or lower. I'm also going to ask that his effective range is about fifteen to twenty meters for now, which ought to be plenty in battle.

His spear can be made of steel and any real-world wood.

As to his strength and speed, he can be 1.5x as strong and agile as a normal human, for now.

Make those changes and you'll be playing with us in no time. :)

Okay, done. It's hard to keep within the rules and be accurate to real life.

H'mm...I'm leery of granting the acute hearing as well as everything else, but I'll chalk it up as situational awareness.

Remember, there are many characters with superior stealth skills, so don't overplay your situational awareness or the judges won't take kindly.

Anyway, you are approved!

Welcome to Althanas. We have two optional subforums for new characters, Scara Brae and the Peaceful Promenade, and you have a 300 GP credit voucher to the Bazaar that expires in a month, so get hopping to spend money, and one of our Bazaar mods will take care of you.

Any questions, PM a mod or a vet, and they'll be happy to help.
