View Full Version : Requin Keistar

Keistar
08-16-07, 04:51 AM
Name: Requin Keistar
Age: 23
Race: Human
Hair Color: Black.
Eye Color: Grey blue.
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 189 lbs.

Personality: Bitter and acerbic; the full bite of his cynicism rarely shows itself, save for the darkest of moods. Possessing little respect for the living and non-living of Althanas; Requin sees them as little more than unguarded wallets or things to make the night pass easier. Though noted for his cynicism, in the public eye he outwardly appears friendly, though sarcastic. Often enough, he simply builds a skeleton of a trusting relationship because it's much easier to steal from someone who trusts you. This is not to say he is incapable of experiencing real friendship; however, the process takes a great deal of time and effort to break through the man's emotional shell.

Untrusting and cautious, Requin formed a core grouping of five rules of which he adheres to in life:

Don't trust women. They are devils and will do everything in their power to bring you crashing to the ground.
Don't trust men. They always have a dagger in their sleeve and wait for the best moment to dig it into your back. They lie, cheat, steal, and murder.
If it doesn't benefit you; don't bother doing it.
Never trust your personal well being to another; they're idiots, and will get you killed.
If it's not worth doing yourself, it's not worth it at all.

Appearance: Requin quite simply has the face of a man you find it difficult to distrust; and his smile and posture always oozes undeniable confidence, that is rarely shaken. In passing memory, the first, and perhaps only feature they describe are his eyes; like stones seen through the shallow water of the blue ocean. His hair is of medium length, and well groomed, and at times, his bangs grow long enough to form a curtain over his eyes. For such an occasion, he owns a headband, which he dons during battles or any other risky situations, to eliminate hindrance to his vision. His body is lean and toned with athletic muscle, and the only thing that mars his appearance is a pale, ragged scar stretching from his waist to the middle of his chest.

His attire differs largely from the average Althanian thief; Requin prefers to blend into the general populace. He wears a pair of soft brown leather boots and worn light blue denim jeans, a form fitting, sleeveless charcoal gray shirt, and a brown leather jacket with gray fur trim around the collar. Around his waist is wrapped a brown leather belt with several pouches bound to it's surface, and he has been seen at times with a simple messenger's bag.

History: Born twenty three years ago in the famed, but small and proud city of Lavinya, Requin Keistar's parents were distraught and irresponsible alcoholics. As he grew older, he drew further and further from them until at the susceptible and tender age of seven, he went out into the streets with no intention of returning to them. He went to his aging grandfather, who was happy to have him in the house. Requin was far happier in the older man's company; despite suffering from tuberculosis, his posture was always straight and impeccable, his hair was wavy, and a beautiful shade of white. His eyes shown like dancing blue lights, and he possessed some sort of pride, that his own parents had lost years prior to his birth.

One day at nine years old, Requin asked what was wrong with his mother and father. Settling in at the table in the kitchen, the old man proceeded to tell the boy about the legacy of the Keistars; a bloodline at one time the pride of the Thief's Guild, for it was said they could steal the very stars from the sky and the powers from a man's hands. However, as time passed, and unfamiliar blood entered the family, their power become diluted, the power of the Haruspex, and it was lost forever, as many things of old were. Requin's parents were thought to have perhaps resurrected the power of the Haruspex, but when they were revealed to be frauds, they withdrew into themselves and begin to drink heavily.

Soon after, the old man died. Refusing to return to his parents, Requin again assumed his young and pathetic homeless life. However, one evening, while racing away from a trader whom he had stolen bread from, a young boy named Fadalgia pulled him through an open window after he had raced around a corner, saving him from punishment. Requin and Fadalgia bonded as they grew. They had much common ground to stand upon; both had family histories in the Thief's Guild, and both of their parents were hopelessly addicted to Lavinian ale. When both had turned sixteen, and were men in the eyes of Lavinya, they both joined the Theif's Guild.

It was during a deadly and incredibly stressful test carried out by a proctor of the Guild that the Haruspex of the Keistar finally reemerged. With numerous flesh wounds staining his shirt and slicking his hands with blood, Requin collapsed to the floor, much earlier than he should have, and upon examination of his conscious form, a physician found that strange, silvered mirrors cast his distorted face back when he peeled the boy's lids upwards. Fadalgia was waiting by his bedside when the Heir of Keistar had awakened again, but his expression was strained....his green eyes refusing to meet Requin's stare.

Requin was treated well, after that, and Fadalgia became increasingly more jealous with the man he once called his brother, and became frustrated with the Guild's policies. The boy was hot blooded, and was known for his bad temper. He had to be reminded again and again that he was a thief, not a murderer, when he would move to cut the throat of a man he had knocked unconscious and robbed. His fury peaked when Requin was named a full member of the guild before him.

Two nights after Requin was called a true thief of the Guild, Fadalgia stabbed him deep in the shoulder as they strolled to a favorite pub, and when he fell, he sought to sever the tie as brother, and cut Requin open from waist to chest. Fadalgia fled Lavinya that night, vanishing into Althanas, leaving Requin to nearly bleed to death on a bridge. Recovered by the Guild, his wounds were tended to, and when he was able, he gathered his things and left. Disenchanted with life, Requin set his dreams on his own personal success, no longer caring for the well being of those around him.

Skills Overview:

The Haruspex: A genetic mutation seen only in the bloodline Keistar. The Haruspex manifests as the eyes transformation into organic quicksilver, which includes sclera, pupil, and iris; the entire eye takes on something of a silvery, mirrored sheen, as such that a person could see their reflection in them. It places the Keistar's mind into an accelerated state of mental awareness and perception, and "grays out" their magical signature, so that it is susceptible to new forms not commonly available to them.

Requin's Haruspex is currently in a juvenile state, so he may only acquire low powered spells and simple techniques (lvl. 0). Once a skill or spell has been seen with the Haruspex, it is permanently recorded in the Keistar's memory, for use at any time they wish in the future. Despite how much he may wish it; he may not copy any sort of spell or skill that is exclusive to one's race or genetic make up, like having fangs with an attached poison gland, or naturally breathing fire. As it must see all of the body's movements during the use of a skill, Requin may not be attacking another, or moving at all, he must be stationary, observing additionally. Additionally, after he has seen the skill, he must have another moment in which to fully grasp it (One post watching the opponent, one more to record it). If his skin is broken at any moment while he is trying to memorize what he has just observed, it will break his concentration, and he will have to attempt again.

Activation of the Haruspex is physically draining on the Keistar, and at Requin's current level, it will feel as though he is in a steady jog on top of anything else he is doing, even if simply resting. Therefore, it is only activated for short periods of time.

Basic Skills: Requin is of average skill in the use of short blades, such as daggers and short swords, and is known to at least be handy in combat. Being a practiced thief and con artist, his agility and dexterity make him a moderately difficult adversary in close quarters, and is known for having a sharp mind and quick wit.

Chemistry: Possessing basic and cursory knowledge of chemical compounds and their reaction when introduced to one another, Requin is able to make common healing salves, ointments, and antivenins, though the time it takes to craft such a thing makes the skill only useful in the aftermath of battle. He prefers, however, to devote his time and potential to the creation of objects useful to conning people. Primarily fool's gold, and panacea, a "cure-all" whose praises are sung by old wives across the world.

Equipment: Aside from a change of clothes, owns a pair of steel short swords, Cinquedea. Possessing a blade which is as wide as a man's five fingers at it's base, it tapers to a somewhat rounded tip. Despite having a series of fullers carved into their faces, their weight restricts them to last resort weapons; used almost only in citadel battles and dire situations. His preference for his everyday trade is a steel push dagger with a walnut grip and a four inch blade. Not only is it's use incredibly simple, It is easily hidden, and often underestimated.

Though his armor is sparse, his leather jacket will serve as some form of protection glancing blows. He also owns a pair of fingerless leather and iron bracers. Metal plating cover both the bottom and upper portion of his forearm, with a plate on the back of his hand; and is lined with linen for comfort.

While not often lugged around the soil of Althanas, Requin owns a scuffed leather messenger's bag containing five vials of fool's gold, usually sold to children or stupid peasants, and ten portions of panacea. Taking the form of a yellow wax square the six of a man's palm, it has been often referred to as the "physician's honeycomb". This fake cure-all is taken by breaking it's sixteen wax cubes in to separate doses and chewed, one a day, until it is all gone. In the center of the cubes is a thick, bitter tasting fluid, and as medicine is often terrible to taste, it's authenticity is not often contested. As strange as it is, some people with blind faith in the panacea actually do recover from what ails them. There is a tiny, ten percent chance that if you truly believe the medicine to be effective, it will cure your stomach flu, your strep throat, your common cold. However, since Requin knows for a fact it does not work, it will do nothing for him.

Haruspex sounds important to your character's storyline, so I'm going to approve it, but if you want to mimic someone else's spell, you have to get OOC permission first, okay?

Second...there is no vlince leather. Vlince is like linen, and I'm disinclined to approve you with it, although you could definitely go buy some as soon as you're approved. You can have a leather jacket, that'd be fine.

Also, if you intend on selling your Fool's Gold and Panacea portions, at this level your skill with making them isn't so good, so you can't sell it for much, and your healing salves and stuff are only of limited effectiveness.

Sound good?

And just a wee geographical note: Lavinya is a trade city, not a country. The country it's in is Reven.

It was a jacket with a leather shell and a vlince interior, much like how here there are winter coats with a wool shell and a cotton interior. Leather and vlince.

Still, fixed, thank you.

I can't approve vlince right off the bat. You have five hundred gold, so you could probably BUY a vlince lining, but before I can approve you, I need you to change the vlince-lined leather coat to a plain leather coat.

And you can have iron plating for his arms.

Mm, I forgot that it was in equipment, too.

Fixed.
