I'm new to both the site and to RPing, so sorry for any mistakes! I've read the character creation guides so it should be relatively okay, but I'm happy to change almost anything. Also, please excuse the history, it's probably repetitive and confusing, and I have a little writer's block at the moment. Also I'm not sure how you're supposed to label skills, if you just put a name, or put something like "Advanced Fighting" or "Moderate Magic" etc. Currently it's a name and a description, but I will add titles as necessary. On the subject of skills, I left his magic skill fairly open. He can cast a wide variety of spells concerning darkness and shadows, but they're not very potent (yet). Is this okay, or should I change it to be more strict?

Full Name: Caliginosus Feron Grimface
Nickname: Caligin or Cal
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Race: Human
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 158 Lbs
Eye Color: Deep Brown
Hair Color: Shadowed Red
Occupation: Magician

Appearance: Caliginosus is a fairly tall human, with a basic oval head shape and average ears and nose. He has eyes with a spiderweb-like design and a shade of mohogany, and his hair is a dark red. His hair is fairly short and often slightly matted; it sticks off his fore head rather than lying flat against it, and comes down to the top of his neck in the back. He has caucasian white skin with a light tan, and is lightly muscled. His arms and legs are of average length for his height, and his hands and feet are normal too. He generally wears fairly dark clothing, often robes, and he wears light leather travelling boots and occasionally cloth gloves.

Personality: Despite coming from a line of killers, Caliginosus strives to use his magical powers for good, rather than evil. He will kill if he needs too, but he generally would rather abstain from completely needless violence. He has a strong sense of honor and justice, and always stays true to his word. He despises the rest of his family, and hopes to one day start a new line of Grimfaces, however he contemplates changing his name before that day arrives.

History: As a young child, Caliginosus was subject to harsh words and grotesque scenes of violence. His family, currently three entire generations living in one rather large manor in a desolate part of Salvar, was a band of killers who often brought home small or large animals simply to slaughter. Rarely did they clean the blood off the floor, the red marble had been enchanted and quickly absorbed the liquid, taking on its color and even the smell. Caligin could never stand the potent smell emanating from the floors, but he never complained.

He knew that if he complained, if he challenged the work of the Grimfaces, that he would be slain, quite possibly by his own parents or siblings. For that was the way of this evil house, those not willing to murder and maim and garrote were simply killed. The inhabitants took joy in taking other's lives, and most of them were highly skilled at it. Some used magic, some used swords, the method didn't matter, only the outcome. Caligin grew up being horrified by these vile ways, but managed to repress his feelings and act casually. From birth he was gifted with the power of magic, and as he hit his mid teen years, he was forced to use the gift for ill doings.

As a sort of coming of age ritual, when a Grimface turned sixteen he would be rewarded by being allowed to commit his first murder. His parents had abducted a man from a small nearby village, and as Caligin walked down the stairs from his bedroom on the second floor, he saw the man kneeling in the middle of the hall. He was blindfolded and gagged, and his wrists and ankles were tied. The image of the man struggling against his bonds still burns in Caliginosus' mind, and is the subject of countless nightmares. He was made to walk up to the man and simply kill him with a spell. His family encouraged him to make it extra bloody. He whispered sorry in such a low voice that only the man could hear it, and then, knowing it was either the man's life or both of their lives, he began to work his magic.

He had taken the spellbook of the Grimfaces from its pedestal in the hall, and reading an incantation from the book and raising a hand, dark matter began streaming from the hand and towards the man's mouth. It passed through the gag and shot down through the man's throat and into his lungs and stomach. At the twitch of a finger he could make the matter continue it's course and envelope his entire body, stopping all processes and killing him. However, just before he took the man's life, Caligin was overcome by his horror of what he was about to do. Retracting the matter from the man's throat, he lowered his hand and let the shadows disperse. He pulled off the blindfold and ungagged the man. Looking up, he called to the onlooking Grimfaces, they numbered about eight,

"I refuse to kill this man." A few of the family members dropped their jaw in disbelief. His brother muttered that he always knew that Caligin was weak.

"CALIGINOSUS! If you wish to remain a Grimface, you will kill this man immediately!" screamed his mother in rage.

"I will not kill him, and I do not wish to remain a Grimface." he replied.

"So be it." said his father, and with a flick of his hand, a spear formed of shadow shot outwards towards Caligin's head. Caligin moved just before the spear hit him and it shot past his ear, and smashed against the opposite wall.

"I hate this manor, I hate killing, and most of all, I HATE YOU ALL!" Caligin yelled, and then he quickly shot off large blasts of darkness towards the onlooking family members. Taking the dagger which rested in the middle of the Grimface spellbook, he quickly cut the bonds of the man, and before he looked to see if his spells hit, he grabbed the man and ran out of the large doors with the spellbook and knife. As soon as he was outside he slammed the doors shut and helped the man up, and began running with him back to the village. It was only ten minutes run and apparently Caligin's spells had hindered the family because they were not seen in pursuit. When they reached the town Caliginosus made sure the man was okay, and then took off towards the port.

The town was right by the sea, and the only thing Caligin could focus on was getting as far away from this place as fast as possible. Luckily the Grimfaces alloted their children small pouches of gold, and Caligin used almost all of it to pay a captain who was taking off for an island called Scara Brae. The ship was leaving basically just as Caligin arrived, and if he hadn't payed the dockmaster a healthy sum to hail the ship and had it stop just before it left, he would have missed it. Scara Brae was apparently not too far, only a weeks ship ride, and had many races and ages of people. It seemed like a decent place to Caligin, which was good, because before he learned about it he was already on board and sailing away.

He had payed well, so he was adequalely quartered and fed, and more or less enjoyed the voyage. The week passed quickly, and after asking the captain for directions to the nearest inn, he thanked the crew and set off. He got to the inn whether much hindrance, and walked in. He was out of gold at this point, but after a lot of pleading and persuasion, he managed to get a job working in the tavern of the inn in return for a place to stay and food. He had only a black robe and the spellbook and knife of the Grimfaces. He continued practicing his magic in his free time, and even occasionally sparred some of his new found friends with his dagger.

He worked at the inn until he was about twenty one, at which point he continued staying at the inn but made money by working as a gardener. He didn't make much money, really only enough to pay for his room and food, but it was a happy life style without strife or murder. However, by the time he reached twenty seven, he was getting tired of his monotonous life style, and he decided to quit his job. He occasionally practiced magic for the pleasure of crowds and got a small amount of gold from that, but mainly he explored the island and bettered his magic, as he hoped to one day become a full-fledged adventurer.

Weaponry:

Fancy Iron Knife: This eight inch knife is a dark color with a very intricate hilt and handle. It has a basic triangular blade, and fits easily in Cal's hand.

Armor:

Black Cotton Robe: Although it is a simple design, it fairs rather well against the elements and doesn't get too hot in the sunlight. It doesn't offer any protection to speak of against weapons however.

Skills:

Black Magic: Caliginosus can manipulate shadows and dark matter to a moderate degree. He can control their shape and movement, as well as create fairly concentrated solids out of it. He doesn't have too much experience using spells in combat, however he is definitely capable of fighting with magic.

Knife Fighting: Caliginosus can swing his knife and cut ya! He is highly unskilled at fighting with a knife, but he can slash and thrust with it. He can't really defend himself with it at all, and most of his attacks are parried, so he generally resorts to the knife as his last resort.

All right, it doesn't look too powerful. Just be careful not to powergame your black magic, and you can't kill anyone with it yet.

Approved! Welcome to Althanas, and if you have any questions at all, just shoot me or any other mod a PM. We'll be glad to help ya.
