Caliginosus

Caliginosus strolled down the gravel street, and as his feet disturbed the rocks dust rose up to greet his nose. He was getting tired, having been walking for a couple of hours now, and his boots barely lifted off the ground; he simply slid them along the road. He was walking to a bustling city that was supposed to have many shops, and despite it being a short and easy journey, Caliginosus had managed to get lost. The path wasn't very straight, and it was worn away and the gravel was scattered in parts. In one of those parts, Caligin had just taken his best guess and kept going on in the same direction, unfortunately the path had actually turned sharply to the right. However, after finding his way through a small forest, he finally managed to find the path again, and followed it for the rest of the duration of his trip.
He could see the tops of buildings in the distance, along with the sight of lights and the distant sound of people going about their daily business and children frolicking around. After a few more minutes of dragging his feet across the gravel he reached the town. He had left early, and it was only a little bit after midday now, so he figured all the stores would still be open. Looking down at the hilt of the dagger protruding from the book he was carrying, he contemplated what metal he should get for his new one. He wanted something that could be enchanted well, or could possibly channel his magic. His hand strayed to his dagger, he was simple wanting to observe it, but considering he had just walked into town he figured drawing weaponry might seem hostile, so he let his hand drop back to his waist. It wasn't long until he saw a sign with a picture of a sword hanging down in front of a building, and his guess that it was an armory was confirmed as he walked in and saw the large amount of weaponry against the walls.
He took a deep breath and walked towards the counter. On the wall behind it he could see a rather big collection of knives, kunais, daggers, dirks and even krises. Looking up towards a man who seemed to be the owner of the store, he said, "I'm looking for a knife, or some other kind of small blade."
He drew out his own knife and laid it on the counter. "I think I want something with a blade a little longer than this... Perhaps about a foot long overall. As for metal I wanted something that could be enchanted easily or channel magic, I think that means either Damascus or Prevalida, but I'm no expert. I don't have much money, so I probably can't afford anything really well made, just something sort of average. Could you give me an estimate for a foot long knife made of damascus, and also another about a knife made of prevalida?" He asked.

Morning had come and gone, very few customers had entered the shop and fewer still had actually bought a blade. Keller sat at the stool behind the counter polishing a newly forged dirk. Idly he considered closing up the shop for the afternoon and returning home early to his wife. A startlingly white smile split the tanned, weathered skin of his face when he thought of how delighted she would be.
The sound of the door closing brought Keller's attention back to the store, away from his wife's company and coking. Setting the blade he was polishing aside, Keller looked up at the young man advancing towards the counter. Silently he took in the tired air of the young man as he examined him. Gnarled, scarred hands reached to a shelf under the counter and took out a water skin and placed it on the counter before him, near the younger man.
“Damascus and Prevalida. The Damascus blade would run you 350 gold pieces. The Prevalida will be 1200 gold.”

Caliginosus watched as the man's hand strayed down under the counter. He figured the shop keeper was simply reaching for a dagger after hearing Caliginosus' request, but as the hand came back up it was clutching a water skin, not a weapon. For a second Caliginosus didn't understand, as he was intrigued by the man's hands; they were heavily scarred and seemed to have been through many battles.
Hopefully it means he knows his stuff when it comes to weaponry... Caliginosus thought. However after a moment or two he realized he was sort of staring at the guy's hands, and quickly turned his attention to the water skin. He was fairly tired, his legs were somewhat sore, but he wasn't that thirsty. He grinned and gave a quick shake of his head, muttering, "No thanks," under his breath. The man then answer Caliginosus' questions.
“Damascus and Prevalida. The Damascus blade would run you 350 gold pieces. The Prevalida will be 1200 gold.”
"Wow, twelve hundred gold... Little too much for me, so I think I'll go with the damascus. I want it to last me some time though, so I might as well get the best I can get. Do you have any dasmascus blades of a higher quality?" Caliginosus asked, looking towards the row of daggers once more. He didn't have much gold, but he didn't really buy anything very often, so he figured he might as well get a weapon that was going to last him and keep him content.

"Better quality..." Keller scratched the graying hair that covered his head.
"If that is a insinuation that my blades are not of the best quality you can just get out of my shop young man. My blades are not made from alloys, unless a customer orders one." Keller grumbled to himself as he walked away, hurrying for the back room of his shop.
He returned, minutes later, bearing three small daggers, a short sword as well as the blade the younger man had originally asked for. Placing the daggers and longer blade made of damascus on the counter he removed the sheathe on the short sword and held it out towards the young man.
"Sturdy craftsmanship, it won't shatter or brake anytime soon. I'm sure you're aware of the metal's unique properties. That blade will cost 500 gold, the daggers are 150 each."

"No, no. I'm just very inexperienced with weapo-" Caliginosus started, trying to cover up any mistake he had made. However, the shop keeper had turned and walked into a different room, grumbling something unintelligble. Caliginosus swore inaudibly and turned his head to look at the rest of the store to see if he'd made a fool of himself in front of anyone else.
Luckily, the store seemed empty (There were many racks of weapons so he couldn't see the entire room) so he relaxed a little. He twiddled his thumbs a little while trying to think of what to say and how to apologize, but before he came up with anything the man returned with more blades. Caliginosus opened his mouth to say something, but he didn't know what would be the best apology so he just awkwardly closed it.

The merchant had laid down three daggers and a short sword. The shortsword caught Caliginosus' eye, but he wasn't very good with daggers yet, and he figured that a blade that was too much longer would be even harder to weild. Biting his lower lip in frustration his eyes switched back and forth between the shortsword and the daggers. There was also the other knife he had gotten a price estimate for, which only made his decision more complicated.
This would be a lot easier if I knew a thing or two about swords and daggers... He thought, trying to decide. "Well, as you can probably tell from my no-doubt incorrect terminology I'm not very skilled with weapons, nor do I know much about them. I'm pretty sure I know the 'unique properties', but other than that I'm somewhat out of my league. I doubt I can really use a shortsword to any degree, so I think I'll go with the knife we talked out earlier, the one that was three hundred and fifty gold or so. Sorry for being so fickle." Caliginosus said, subconsciously aware that he had sort of rambled on about being unintelligent when it came to blades.
Reaching down to his waist he fished his gold pouch out of the long pockets of his robes, and looked inside. He fished out gold amounting to three hundred and fifty and laid it on the counter. He drew his hand back abnormally fast, as he was nervous that he'd get a remark like, "Of course you want the one I didn't bring out." He swallowed, and looked up, waiting for the man to fetch the foot-long damascus blade.

Raising a brow at the young man's nervous demeanor, Keller shook his head and headed back towards his store room to fetch the blade needed. Returning a moment later with the blade sheathed in a harden leather scabbard, Keller laid the blade and a oil cloth for polishing in front of the young man.
"Take good care of your blade and it will take care of you. If you need training, you could try the Citadel. Many there would be willing to train you and you needn't worry about dying on a peramant basis. The Ai'brone revive and heal all within their walls."
Transaction complete. Caliginosus losses 350 gp. Gains 100 EXP for good IC interactions and the damascus blade.
