Master Val'Rysn

Character Data
Name: Val'Rysn Tenerick
Age: 194
Race: Drow
Gender: Male
Eye Color, Hair Color/Style: Like the rest of his kin, Val's eyes are dark red. His snow-white hair is long, about mid-back, and he usually keeps it draped over his shoulders in the front.
Height and Weight: 5 foot, 1 inch. 112 lbs.
Occupation: Former Master Mage and teacher for a small, non-descript Institute in Ettermire.
Personality:
...For evil, like chaos, was one of the fundamental forces of Creation, manifest in both the macrocosm of the wide world and the microcosm of the individual soul. As chaos gave rise to possibility and imagination, so evil engendered strength and will. It made sentient beings aspire to wealth and power. It enabled them to subjugate, kill, rob, and deceive. It allowed them to do whatever was required to better themselves with never a crippling flicker of remorse.
Thus, evil was responsible for the existence of civilization and for every great deed any hero had ever performed. Without it, the peoples of the world would live like animals. It was amazing that so many races, blinded by false religions and philosophies, had lost sight of this self-evident truth.
Val is a conceited man, looking out only for himself more then half of the time. He feels that his intelligence grants him superiority over most others, and it isn't misplaced. For more then half his life, Val'Rysn spent time in libraries across Althanas, studying lore, folktales, religion, myths, and other things of the like. He looks to better himself, whatever the cost.
Of course, he is not the loud speaking, obnoxious asshole either. He won't walk up to someone who he thought looked stupid and call them a fuckhead, rather, would probably just not talk to them unless he absolutely needed to. Come to think of it, he doesn't speak much. But when he does, his words are pre-thought in advance. He is an independent, but will cooperate with others if he felt it would better his ultimate goal in life.
Appearance
Val'Rysn is a young Drow, and as such still retains all the hawk-like, smooth and sleek features of any dark elf. Smooth, obsidian skin with a pointed nose, smallish eyes and a small grin being his facial features. With one look at Val, one could tell that he is very well kept. Very clean and self-respecting. Around his neck Val always wears his brooch, a fiery red diamond of no significant shop-value strung on a simple black thread. It has no enchantments or whatsoever imbued into it.
Even though he is a mage with considerable talents, he fails to actually uphold a wizardly visage. For attire he simply wears a small caped, hooded white cloak over a matching white cloth, sleeveless tunic, black gloves and black trousers. The cloak that he wears is enchanted; a small enchantment that only makes it a little bit tougher than the cloth it was made out of. The insides are also lined with pockets lined with small magical components (elaborated in equipment). For footwear Val'Rysn prefers small, laced, black leather boots for comfort and versatility.
Equipment
Enchanted Cloak: This is Val's small, hooded, white enchanted coat. The enchantment is a small one, where that it is slightly tougher than the fabric it was made of. Perhaps a tad less durable than leather. Still very useful. The inside is also lined with small pockets that can be used to store various things that may need to be used quickly and covertly.
Stall of Syl'Vorith: Syl'Vorith is the name of Val's deceased father, killed in battle. It is a durable oak staff, painted a black color. A couple inches taller than Val himself. It was the staff that his father carried with him everywhere, and the staff that Rysn has promised to carry everywhere. The staff itself has no special markings or symbols etched into the wood, nor any special enchantments or properties. The upper end of the staff is spiraled, like most common mage staffs.
Iron Knife: A knife purchased at a bazaar in Ettermire, made or tough iron. The non-descript knife is about ten inches long in total, the handle being four inches long and the blade being six. It is basically a single piece of metal, with hammered out wrist guards and handle, wrapped in black leather. The blade is straight and sharpened significantly. Val only bought it because he thought it might come in handy in a fix. It rests in a small leather sheath that rests easily on his belt at his side.
Traveler’s Tools: This is a black leather sack with a strap on it that the dark elf keeps slung diagonally around his shoulders while travelling. It houses basic survival tools, some pans and culinary items, a makeshift sleeping sack and various other things, such as rations.
Magical Components: Within the pockets lined in his cloak, Tenerick keeps several things in there that allows him to cast some of his spells quickly and easily, if he was ever in an emergency. Also some vials of potions or other things. The tools are listed below:
Spell Scroll(x2): Val's spell scrolls were magically created to almost instantaneously cast any of his memorized spells. Used mainly for emergencies, and once used the scroll dissolves immediately.
Light Restore Vial(x4): These vials contain a colorful, bubbling liquid with a pungent smell. Upon drinking one, some of the most minor wounds in the body are healed within moments. These would include small cuts and bruises that may hinder any of the senses, perhaps. But nothing more serious than that.
Antipoison(x2): The antipoison vials contain a small amount of calm, red liquid with a sweet aroma and taste. After ingesting one, the body will be cleansed of any minor, common poisons that can even be found among peasants.
Skills, Attributes and Magic
Skills:
Basic Combat Training: It is essential for every mage to learn at least a little bit about melee combat. This is because some occasions might arise where a punch or thrust from a staff is necessary. So Val has been taught in the most basic of melee fighting, simple martial arts and some knife fighting. Though, he is still nowhere near as good as a devout fighter, even a novice brawler would take him down easily. But it's better than nothing!
Intelligence and Wit: After years of studying and learning, this dark elf has amassed a great deal of knowledge and as a side effect, generated a quick wit and sly tongue. If a problem can be solved with words, he will try. This wit works mostly on dimmer creatures.
Attributes: Because of his elven heritage, Val'Rysn is naturally lithe and flexible, with the ability to squeeze into small spots. This has come very much in handy in several cases, along with some natural dexterity with the hands, which is of course required to cast certain spells. And being a mage, his strength and agility is nothing to brag about. He would probably be a little bit weaker than that of an average human male, though being an elf he has a little bit of natural agility, giving him a small edge over an average man. But all of it's made up for with his wisdom, brought forth by a high intelligence. This has made Val a quick thinker, assigning value to all of his actions and those of his around him, determining if it is the right thing to do or not.
Magic: Of course, being a mage, this Drow is an adept magic user. Understanding the basic fundamentals of energy and illusion creation. Memorized within his head Val has an arsenal of useful spells that he can use either with the whisk of a hand, or by a short verbal incantation, or maybe a combination of both. But though he has some particular spells memorized, he can still create some of the basic energies on a whim. For example, a flicker of fire at the tip of a finger or perhaps a little spark. Of course, over time, his general control over these energies will grow. His memorized spells are listed below, and state whether it is a hand, verbal, or combo incantation:
Fireball(verbal): The fireball is your average run-of-the-mill mage spell. Easy to remember and easy to cast. With a short pronunciation of some arcane syllable, Val can create a screaming ball of fire in the palm of his hand about six inches in diameter. And rather than being propelled via the natural strength of the caster, it's cast forth with a thrust of the hand, and shoots in the direction of that thrust. Upon impact it will make a small explosion where it hit. Of course, if it misses the target it will infact dissipate while flying through the air. Of course though, despite the spells dazzling visual effects, the damage dealt is considerably low at this point. Probably searing the skin a little where it contacted.
Distortion(verbal): This spell is simple, all that it does is magically transport the caster a few feet to either side of himself, in the same position that he casted it in. It's useful if cornered, or pinned down by anything, because all it requires is a short verbal incantation. Currently only usable once per thread.
Spark(hand): This is a hand spell, meaning that in order to cast it the mage must simply do some quick hand movements. Upon completion a blue-white spark is formed in the hand, then with the thrust of that hand the sparks leap to the target like a bolt and shock the target significantly. Much like fireball, despite what this spell looks like the effects aren't yet very potent. Its liable to fall a weak creature, like a goblin maybe, but a sturdy fighter, never.
Shield(verbal): With a short incantation, Val can create a medium sized translucent shield to cover any area of his body. This effective shield is somewhat strong, able to block maybe a couple arrows, or strong enough to weaken the force of a slash. It isn't yet strong enough to actually block a sword slash, which will shatter the magical energy easily, but it will either weaken the blow or give an extra moment to dodge. It is more effective against magic of its own kind, useful when fighting another mage for it can block perhaps a single low level spell.
History
Short Life History: Val was born to a small merchant house in the slums of Ettermire. His mother was killed days after his birth for reasons unknown, and as such he never learned her name, never even got to see her. His father, Syl'Vorith had practically been wrecked emotionally after that. For years they barely spoke to each other. Rysn was sent away to a mage school, a terrible one, at that, while his father rotted in their small cottage. In school he heard talk of how his father was a great adventurer in the past, a strong fighter. But he himself had never seen Syl in all his splendor. For all his life, till he was killed himself he lived as a bum. So Val'Rysn had never experienced much joviality in his early lifetime.
Though during his magical teachings under an able mage, his magical talents were discovered. Naturally skilled in the creation of arcane energies he had been recognized as a student with potential, and thus sent to a better Academy. Then over those years he studied more in the Academy libraries and practiced magic daily, it was probably then that the superiority feeling began to manifest. After he graduated he stayed at that Academy and became a Master Mage there, and a teacher. After realizing he wasn't fit to work with newcomers he left and decided to go on his own...
