View Full Version : The concept of money...

Trade amongst the Kokopelli was a simply affair; two men, each with something to offer, met with one another and talked until each was happy with any particular arrangement. Furs were primarily traded for meat, bones for clay, fish for roots and vegetables. Trade was also primarily an inter-tribal affair, as individual clans openly shared their goods amongst themselves. In that sense, the concept of individual commerce, and in a greater sense the concept of money was a foreign one to Jada. Yet, as foreign as it was, the basic principle was easy enough to pick up on the fly...

Trade something in your possession for something in the possession of someone else...

And apparently everyone in the Radasanth Bazaar wanted the shiny metal trinkets, referred to as "gold pieces", that Jada had been slowly accumulating ever since his arrival...

He had discovered the Bazaar earlier that morning, purely by chance as he was exploring the ins and outs of the city streets to slake the intense thirst of his curiosity. Just how large the city really was, and just how many people lived there, and just what all those people did with their time were all things that Jada wanted to learn, wanted to understand. Stumbling upon the Bazaar had only served to intensify that curiosity however, and now in the mid of the afternoon Jada was still meandering in and out of buildings, and weaving his way between the open air markets that seemed to sprout right up from the city streets between them. The volume and variety of items on sale was astounding, and Jada poked through each individual shop with renewed interest.

Armors, weapons, tools, and a whole host of items Jada couldn't even identify, many crafted of materials he could not identify, surrounded him on all sides in the shop that currently held his interest. He was one of several people casually picking through the items displayed on tables and hanging from the wall. A few items grabbed his attention the most: a weapon that would seem to give a person claws, a round shield, a bow, and one item very familiar to him, a tomahawk.

Jada picked up the tomahawk and held it carefully, feeling the weight of it, balancing the weapon as he turned it over in his hands and admired the polish and craftsmanship in the metallic head. Axe heads amongst the Kokopelli were normally crafted from slate or some other form of shale stone. The warrior quickly found himself falling in love with the weapon the longer he held it in his hands.

Just walk up to the counter and set it down. Jada said to himself. You've seen people doing it all day.

There was a nervous twinge in the young warriors gut as he approached the counter at the front of the shop and set the fine tomahawk on the flat wood surface. On the counter next to him was a line of different metallic slugs, each polished to a different shine, each with a tag attached to it. Leaning in close Jada poured over each slug until he found one made of the same material as the tomahawk.

"Ste-el" He sounded out the word on the tag. The word itself meant nothing to him, but he decided that it must mean something. Glancing around he searched for the person who usually seemed to come forward whenever someone set something on the counter...

"Elena there is someone at the counter." Kale pulled back from his advantage point of watching the customers in the shop while his boss ate her lunch. Elena shook her head and set her lunch down.

"Kale, I trust you. You handle that one, okay?" Elena smiled at the jittery smile Kale sent her before he hurried up to the counter.

"G-good day, sir. Will this b-be all for you?" Kale flushed and ducked his head. Under the fringe of his long bangs he studied the tomahawk that the man had laid down on the counter. Digging for everything Elena had taught him so far he mentally tallied the weapons cost.

Jada processed the man’s question slowly, working his brain to translate each word as it was spoken. The man who spoke them seemed to stammer over a few of the words, and the warrior got the distinct feeling that the man standing behind the counter was nervous. His nervousness only intensified the roiling, churning sensation in Jada’s own gut…

“Oho.” Jada replied simply. ”Yes”. “This.” He added, waving his hand over the counter to indicate the lone steel tomahawk.

Almost as a secondary thought Jada reached into one of the pockets in his shorts, fishing for a pouch of the gold pieces that he had acquired since arriving in Radasanth. Pulling out the pouch he set it down on the counter alongside the weapon and looked questioningly at the man opposite him.

Elena peeked around the corner at her young shop apprentice and smiled.

"The weapon will be 150 gold, sir." Carefully, he reached for the man to assist him in counting out the gold.

Jada eyed the clerk opposite him skeptically as the man pulled open the draw strings of the bag and started counting out individual coins on the counter top. The value of each coin, and by extension the price tag on the tomahawk, was lost on him, and watching the man count suddenly made the young warrior very irritable.

You need to learn. He reprimanded himself. This man could be taking advantage of you, and you would have no idea. Idiot.

Trying best to hide the scowl that was spreading across his face, Jada drummed him fingers on the countertop in agitation, hoping first and foremost that he had an ample enough supply of the coins to get away with a new tomahawk. Secondly he hoped that the clerk was an honest man...

Kale glanced up at the man and noticed the poorly hide scowl on his face. His hands froze in the middle of pulling out the last coin needed. Clearing his throat quietly he recounted the coins, placing them in stacks of ten.

"T-there we are s-sir." Kale closed the man's bag and waved a hand at the piles of coins.

From her advantage point Elena decided she had tortured her apprentice enough for one day. She grinned as the youth jumped when she pated his shoulder.

"You've done a good job Kale.' Elena said quietly to the boy. 'Run along and eat your lunch." Elena smiled at the customer once Kale had disappeared into the back room. She glanced at the tomahawk and the coins setting on the and nodded slightly to herself approvingly.

"Everything seems in order sir. I apologize if Kale took longer than he should have. He's still learning the ropes of how things work here, not to mention young and still very excitable."

As the clerk cinched up the bag of coins and set it back on the counter, Jada scanned over the neatly stacked coins. It wasn't so much as he was trying to count at this point; it was more a sense of evaluating the trade before him. On one side was the pile of coins resting on the counter, and on the other, the shiny new tomahawk...

"You've done a good job Kale." Jada glanced up from the counter to see that a petite woman had emerged from somewhere within the shop and was talking to the clerk. Kale seemed visibly relieved to see her, and after a few brief words scurried off towards the back of the shop. The woman then browsed over the trade on the counter herself before nodding. "Everything seems in order..." was about as far into the woman's next words as Jada made it before his mind stopped translating and the rest of her words were lost to him.

With one hand he picked up the bag of remaining coins and dropped it safely away in one of the large pockets along the side of his thigh. With his other hand he reverently picked up his new weapon and slid the handle through a loop at his waist.

"Oliwni" Jada said with a smile. Thanks.

Taking the first step cautiously, half afraid that he had misunderstood, and the woman might stop him, Jada began to make for the door. Leaving the coins on the counter behind didn't seem all that bad, not now that he had the tomahawk safely on his person. With no cry of objection, no staying hands to keep him, Jada half cracked a smile in satisfaction, his heart beating, his mind racing...

That wasn't so hard... He thought gleefully. Maybe I'll do this more often...

"Have a good day sir." Elena called to the strange man as he walked away. Humming cheerfully to herself she scooped up the coins and put them away. After waiting to see if any of the other customers in the store would approach the counter Elena retreated to the back room.

"Good job Kale. I'll let you pick up the next customer too." Elena chuckled at the sudden choking noise that came from Kale. She sat down to finish her lunch, ignoring the panicked expression on Kale's face.
