View Full Version : Elven Encounter

Sidhe

Thea jittered frantically under the collar of Sidhe’s shirt. The tiny spider could sense loud noises coming from all around them and she didn’t like it one bit. Chuckling at the squeamish behavior of such a feared creature, Sidhe cupped his keepsake from the Red Forest in his hands and placed her in the leather pouch that hung at his waist. It would muffle the noise and give her a dark place to feel safe in. Thea wasn’t usually uncomfortable traveling under Sidhe’s collar, in fact it was one of her favorite nooks, but they tended to avoid civilization. The sound of dozens of elves setting up shop and selling their wares under the morning Raiaeran sun was too much for the small arachnid.

“You’ll be fine there,” Sidhe cooed as he closed the pouch, reclaimed his staff from the ground and headed toward a chosen shop.

The wares hanging outside this merchant’s store bore signs of great attention to detail and love for the craft. Inside, the roof bore more of the same. There was wooden artistry of all kinds hanging from hooks in the ceiling. This elf had made swords that looked as lethal as their metal counterparts and shields so thick no arrow stood a chance of piercing them. There were bows taller than men and poles with chiseled lettering from base to lofty peak. It was meant to impress the shop’s patrons and did its job exceptionally well.

“I’m here to request your services,” he said to the artisan behind the counter. Placing his staff before them, he went on, “I’ve heard of your skill and would like to upgrade this to talymer or some other wood stronger than oak. Tell me, how much would you charge for this?”

Adian looked up at the young man that made the request then looked over the staff the man held. Carefully he studied the length and the the steel on the staff ends.

"Upgrading your staff will be no problem. it will take me only a day to get the staff ready and exchange the steel from one staff to the other. The price will be 350 for the talymer staff."

“That sounds perfect,” Sidhe grinned.

His hand wandered toward the leather pouch once more. He inserted his hand and began feeling around for his Bazaar vouchers from among the clutter. He felt Thea prod his warm palm with her miniscule forelegs. He avoided her frail form as he retrieved three hundred gold’s worth of vouchers along with fifty gold of his own. He placed these on the counter by the head of his staff and smiled at the elf.

Smiling, Adian set the voucher and the gold in the shops iron box. He took the staff and started heading towards the back room, examining the steel cap more closely. Just as he reached the door to his workshop Adian paused and looked back at his customer.

"Sorry about that, one track mind.' Adian smiled at the man. 'If you'll return tomorrow I'll have your staff ready for you."

Sidhe bid his farewell with a curt nod of his head and turned to walk straight out the door. He felt much lighter without his primary weapon in hand. Its absence made him feel vulnerable as well, so he endeavored to find a place to stay for the night among Raiaera’s natives. Lindequalmë was dangerous to traverse at any time, but entering unarmed would be nothing short of insanity. So, finding an inn that looked suitable, he made a beeline for its front doors and drove his hand back into the leather pouch to extract the gold he’d need and give Thea a breather.

“Civilization isn’t all that bad,” he chuckled to the jittering spider, still uneasy from the surrounding hustle and bustle.

*~*Next Day*~*

Sidhe awoke uncomfortably the next morning, unaccustomed as he was to formal bed ware and closed-in rooming. Even with the tall windows wide open, he felt incarcerated. After a short meal of berries, which he shared with his eight-legged travel companion, Sidhe set off to the shop he’d entered the day before. Behind the counter he found the same elf as before, but the staff upon it was quite changed. It now shined and gleamed without a trace of polish and was lighter to the touch without sacrificing strength.

“Your skill is truly impressive,” he gasped. “I thank you.”

The steel cap and spike at either end were fitted expertly, mirroring the example set by the staff’s oaken twin. Taking it in his right hand, he left the shop and began his trek toward the Red Forest.

Adian smiled at his customer, pleased that the man was happy with his work.

"Treat it well and it will take care of you."
