Basic Information
Name: Dryden Amos
Age: 19
Race: Human
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Blue
Height: 5 foot 9 inches
Weight: 166 pounds
Occupation: Herbalist
Detailed Information
Personality: Dryden is thoroughly convinced that he is always in the right. He is proud and stubborn a bad combination when he is not exactly what people would call street-smart. Having been training in the arts ever since he was young has made him over-confident of his abilities. He is quick to judge and make accusations in things when he believes he knows the whole picture. When proven wrong he will grudgingly admit but that admission will not come easily. Book smarts is Dryden’s area of expertise having received an education along with his training in the magical arts. This education tends to fluff his ego as he enjoys beating people over the head with it in a figurative fashion.
Though Dryden is not all about arrogance in fact, there is another side to him to people willing to endure the first impression. Dryden is a devoted friend who is loyal to those he trusts. He will go to great lengths to help them not expecting to be paid back. He stands against those who would abuse their power to satisfy their own greed. One might say Dryden is a good person if you can stand the attitude and ego he has about him. Can his ego be crushed? Sure, just don’t think that it will stay down for long.
Appearance: Rich raven black hair is tied back, though a few bangs will fall in front of Dryden’s face. His blue eyes have a spark of mischief to them though gazing at them too long may hint that he possesses an inner strength of some sort. His height and build are average not making him stand out in a crowd. His skin while of a Caucasian tone has a bit of a tan from the last year or so he has spent traveling and learning about the world. He is actually in good shape from the amount of traveling he has done though that certainly does not mean he has incredible strength or a muscleman type body.
His clothes are well made having a good quality to them that is suited to traveling and the outdoors. Commonly his outfit is a hooded cloak that falls about his person, a leather vest with several pouches and pockets, a long-sleeve shirt made of linen, leather pants, and tough leather boots. Not quite the inspiring outfit he dreamed of having but it is serviceable and holds up well in his travels. He has a pair of leather gloves as well but, wears them mostly during cold days and when gathering herbs. There are several attached pouches to his belt and he wears a backpack that has most of his things when traveling. A staff made of oak is commonly in his hands as he uses it during long walks or for self-defense.
History: Dryden was born to Audric and Tavia in the first week of December. Being the third child of Audric and Tavia, Dryden would inherit the least out of his siblings and that was something he accepted nearly all of his life. He was clever as a child learning things quickly and demonstrating that he was a smart young man. Dryden received a thorough education that anyone of noble birth should receive but he was not satisfied with just that. His father a lesser mage took him aside and began teaching Dryden to see if the young man had the spark and understanding to grasp magic. It was a frustrating endeavor, Dryden wanted to do all the great things that he heard in bedtime stories right away and felt his father was simply not teaching him properly.
A great deal of the lessons ended in bickering and arguing the stubborn Dryden not willing to admit he had to start with something simple. He wanted to learn the great and epic spells! He wanted to learn how to call down lightning, how to summon elementals, how to tame dragons, how to blast entire armies to smithereens! Dryden did not want these dull and repetitive series of tests just to see if he had the spark of magic. Of course Dryden did not understand that you had to start with the basics first. He was still young a kid still, a kid who still believed in ghost stories, that fairy tales were really legends, and those great wars were epic tales of adventure!
This process of course continued as Dryden and Audric bickered and argued. Finally, Dryden yelled something and threw his hand out. A blast of energy surged out and blew up a vase in a very nice shattering display. Dryden stood there shocked and his father simply cocked his brow and went back to what he was reading since Dryden still insisted on the nonsense of starting big.
After a month, Dryden finally gave in realizing he needed to learn control and patience if he wanted to understand the bigger things that he yearned for. He did not give in gracefully but at least he gave in. Audric took him aside once more and began teaching Dryden those small and necessary lessons of magic that were the building blocks of becoming a mage. Of course, Dryden would get a rude awakening when he turned thirteen.
Apparently, mages were supposed to be able to defend themselves in hand-to-hand combat and know silly things like herbs and medicine. Dryden fumed and was shocked that he had to grunt and sweat to earn his lessons in magic. He was not some commoner he should not have to learn how to twirl a stick or throw a punch correctly! It would be another series of fights between the two stubborn individuals until Dryden’s mother stepped in and more or less gave an ultimatum since she was tired of the fighting. Heeding the evil gaze of the mother and still not understanding the methods to his father’s teaching, he began to learn these other skills.
Years passed and Dryden reached the age of eighteen but he was not satisfied with just staying home. He still had that desire for adventure and excitement. Gathering things and cutting down to where he would be able to travel around he set-off on his own exploration and journey. Nothing exciting happened making him a tad crestfallen but Dryden has not given up yet and at nineteen he is still searching for that excitement and adventure.
Skills and Abilities
Quarterstaff Proficiency – Dryden has an average proficiency in the quarterstaff this skill more of a token skill to defend himself when he could not use his magic. Dryden knows his magic is not that impressive right now and uses his staff to defend himself.
Unarmed Combat – Dryden has an average skill in hand-to-hand combat and the use of weapons such as gauntlets, punching daggers, or other weapons that just enhance the damage of basic hand-to-hand maneuvers.
Herbalist – Dryden has an okay knowledge of herbs and plants and the effects that they typically have on common races and animals. He also knows the safety rules for handling common herbs and preparing them for usage properly.
First Aid – Dryden has a below average skill in First Aid able to give assessments and give treatments for simple injuries, common diseases, and simple breaks in bones. He also knows how to give CPR properly.
Level 0 Spells
[&]Healing – Dryden can heal minor and small injuries by focusing his energies and spending roughly half a minute focusing on them. Should Dryden be interrupted during the casting it will be broken and he must start anew making this a poor skill to use in combat.
[&]Force Missile – Dryden’s main method of attack he simply focuses his energy and unleashes a bolt of energy straight at an enemy. Force Missile currently only deals a small amount of damage and fires a single bolt of energy per casting. This ability is quite simple to dodge as it fires at the same speed of a crossbow bolt from a light crossbow. Should it hit the damage is bludgeoning force.
[&]Iron Hide – Calling forth the element of Earth Dryden toughens his skin and hair to the equivalence of iron though while he gains that toughness is slower and less agile. Dryden can only use this twice per day and it does not last long (roughly 2 to 3 posts).
[&]Detect Magic – An easy to use spell Dryden focuses his power and can detect magic in the form of visible auras. He also has a very VAGUE idea at what type of magic is going on. He can also take an okay guess on just how powerful the magic is. The backlash of this is that powerful magic can give him a splitting headache or a migraine.
[&]Summon Guardian – Once per day Dryden can call forth a guardian who takes the shape of an armored warrior who is composed of stone and wielding an iron blade. This guardian does not last that long (roughly 2 to 3 posts) given Dryden’s control right now. Nothing very remarkable about its abilities considered average for the most part and below average in speed and agility.
Equipment
Oak Quarterstaff – Dryden’s main and only weapon this staff is roughly six feet in length and is quite durable and tough. It has some weathering on it given its extensive use over the past year but its still in good shape. It is often used as a walking staff not having the look of a wizard’s staff right now.
Leather Armor – Dryden has a leather vest and leather slacks that are tough enough to hold up against blows. His boots are also made of leather making them well suited to travel. In addition, he has a pair of leather gloves though these are not as tough as the rest of the leather.
Familiar
Familiar will be acquired through roleplay and questing as I am hoping to get a Pocket Dragon (very small Dragon, inspiration from the old D&D books).
