Ello everybody.

Yes, you read that right. My character is to be a duck. A talking duck. Specifically, a female wood duck. What? I've always wanted to play a duck! ^_^. I'm writing her history right now.

Could you give me some pointers please on how magic works in this world - talking ducks are hard to come by and greatly disadvantaged in many situations, so I'm thinking this could very easily have been something she accidentally did to herself. :)

Other than that... Hi everybody! I'm PD, and I'm here following Nachende. Hope to see you around ^_^.

yay a duck^^ I love ducks *quack*

hihi and welcome and hope you have fun.

Magic works prety much how you want it. Just have to get it approved by the RoG mods. just have to keep it fair for your level and sometimes it helps to be politely assertive to get what you need but you will have to compromise.

*brings a plate of cookies^^ and pounce huggles the ducky*

Welcome to Althanas! Please keep your arms and legs inside the forum at all times or they may be removed by rabid, zombified characters. Do not feed the following people: Letho, Cyrus the Virus, AdventWings, Artifex Felicis, Slayer of the Rot, Serilliant and Christoph for they may become attached to you and are hard to get rid of. Any screams you may now be exoeriencing are the sounds of dying characters. Do not be alarmed for they shall be revived in new and inventive ways the following thread. Have a nice day. ^^

*offers you a plate of cookies, which is good! but some of them are poisonous, which is bad...*

Yay Duck! Both awesome and delicious!

Welcome to Althanas as well.

Remember, you have 300 gold in bazaar credit. Dat's the number in the parenthesis in your side bar profile. That'll expire in a month or so, so use it up quick!

Eeep... poison cookies...

We'll just pretend ducks are immune to most poisons ;).

What's bazaar credit do? Do I get extra bazaar credit for being bizarre?

Thanks for the warm welcomes everybody ^_^.

Now a question - where's a good place for a newbie to start off? My history (approval pending, probably because of the potential to abuse the magic system, though really I just want her to be able to communicate with people and open doors, both tasks harder than they sound) leaves off with her leaving Underwood.

You sound like my kind of person. A warm welcome to you.

OMG! Serilliant spoke!

*shocked*

Well, a good place for most newbies to start off is in Scara Brae or the Peaceful Promenade. You can come up with a good storyline, or just do something whacky to get the feel for the place. You can also start a recruitment thread in The Role Player's Corner if you're looking for people to join you and you want to select them, but if you're not being picky just leave an (open) tag in your thread title.

Curses! My character's intellectual archnemesis is a duck! Eidetic memory AND a randomizer spell? That's uncanny. It makes me want to saute something and feed it to my lil' wendigo.

Welcome to Althanas! We have many cooks, and many cooks have many knives!

Oh, dear. Two ducks in the same thread? Interesting...

Anyways~ *Glances upwards*

...What Witchy said. :p

But generally, you can start anywhere you want to. A recomendation is the Peaceful Promenade, which is generally where most people starting out in Underwood go to.

Oh, yes. And welcome to Althanas! F33d me!

-shoves carrot cake into Raven's face-

Welcome welcome. I'm your resident serial killer. ^_^

I do hope you'll enjoy yourself here, and trust me, it only gets crazier the deeper you tread.

Oh yes. It does.

And I am in the center of it, waiting with a pair of scissors to clip your wings so that you may never fly from this place and shalt be trapped here for all eternity, like the rest of us.

Bwahhahahahaha.

Welcome to Althanas!;)

Well I figured I had to give a duck an eidetic memory, even if she isn't an eider duck. ;) But what do you mean archnemesis? Aix would cleave to an intellectual equal like a familiar!

[Thing you guys probably don't care about]
I have to change her ability to make up spells on the fly before I can be approved though, or rather clarify that it has a decent failure/not doing what she wants it to rate, and limiting the techniques she can use in spontaneous spellcasting to a set of things she already knows - such that she would have to quest to cast spells of greater variety. It's kind of important to her back story that she can do it though - instead of "Make me clean!" she thought "Make me look like I did before!" Of course, that demonstrates how high the failure rate is - instead of having the mud and dirt slide off her skin she turned back into a duck! ^_^

Thanks for the well-wishes and... uh... threats of violence and butchery. >.> Serial killers are cool, butchers cooks and wing-clippers are not.

Again though, I must not have asked loud enough - what exactly is bazaar credit? :)

We have a place called the Bazaar, here. It's like a merchant district. You go in, you make IC posts about your character in a shop, looking for whatever you need. The Bazaar Mod who'll claim your thread will them proceed to rolepaly with you, giving out prices, and eventually selling you the item. Bazaar threads are usually short and not judged, as they're meant as quick stops for your character to get items for a fee: the gold shown just under your Level. The numbers in parentheses are Bazaar Credits, that is to say, an amount of money that is added to your total as a bonus, but only for one moth. Then, if you haven't used it, it disappears.

And you will go to hell for that godawful pun xD

Lillian's skill is exactly what you just described. I don't mean to hijack your thread, but you might find something helpful in this:

Uncanny Hodgepodge – In the slew of books she has read came the occasional grimoires and scrolls of magic. The ink had been washed away in most, while the contents were utterly false in others, but sometimes she stumbled upon the fragments of the keys to unlock powerful magics… but that was what she had, fragments of different keys. With only pieces of knowledge, she did not possess the full understanding of elemental, portal or ethereal magic, but she had glued a key nonetheless, and opened the most bizarre of doors. Whenever she calls upon preternatural forces with her patchwork magic, anything can happen, from bursts of cold fire to gusts of stunning wind, but more often than she wishes, the spell backfires in the most unpredictable ways.

Sometimes, the spell's nature will be affected by keywords, just like your 'make me look like I did before!', but most of the time, the triggers are just as random as the effects. As long as your fail rate is very high, though, your skill should get approved.

And yes, they'd be more like brain-buddies than nemeses. Let's have then draw quasars and gravity wells on an oil canvas!

Hi, Miss Duck!

Oh, don't mind me. I'm just a new/old member who's not insane yet. ^^

I knew you could be persuaded. ^__________^ Now get approved so Jiala can cook up a nice duck dinner for everyone. :<

Just as long as it's not Duck L'Orange. That stuff tastes terrible. Cold duck sandwiches are really really good though.

Hey, cool off you two.

*Gives PaperDuck a nice bucket of duckfeed*

Now, eat up. We like you better when you're plump and meaty. :D
