There were very few things that the emerging Enarlin apprentice still cared about. The Furry Protectorate was not among them. Corin Rivfader’s blood was slipping fast away from its sinless character. In the balance, his vampiric infection was latching on to Enarlin magic faster than the misplayed hex magic could fix it. By now, it was clear Corin was drowning. Drowning in the regrets of things he hadn’t done, drowning in desires he couldn’t fulfill, but mostly drowning in his own avarice. Rainee, who had once meant everything to Corin, was now something that he’d placed upon a pedestal. He loved her, but only in that way. She was like a statue to him, beautiful and worthy of admiration, but expected to stay quiet and not interfere in his decisions.

However, things lately were beginning to go awry. She was beginning to know too much and her damn rugrat Mylie was asking too many questions. Far too often, Corin felt himself tempted to attempt to say an unkind word, just so that Rainee would take offense and he could slap her to the ground. Until now, he had refrained, but with the Enarlin magic soaking deeply into his soul, it would only be a matter of time.

“Don’t let it bother you,” his mentor said, as they walked through the bazaar in Corone. “Change is inevitable, just insure that you make your changes for the good. Power is the only constant. Look at your girlfriend… even love dies.” It was broad daylight, and yet the two sinister sorcerers moved without fear. There was nothing about Enarlin magic that made a practitioner apparent to a stranger, and there were few out of the Tesserar landmass who even understood the gravity of the soul corrupting magic banned in Raiaera.

Corin knew that it was true. Rainee had been incredibly poor to him as of late. As such, while he hadn’t noticed it, the feline vampire had been increasingly disinterested in hiding the results of his new occupation. Only a few days ago, he had left bloody gloves hidden underneath his pillow, assuming that Rainee would not find them until he returned. If it were necessary, he would have managed a lie that would have likely diffused suspicions a little, but that was only if he cared enough to. As it was, his attention was so rapt in the words of his mentor that any thoughts of the reception he expected at home were almost completely immaterial.

The new spell, “Hurricane Eye” mattered so much more.

However, Corin was returning home, and this time he was bringing his mentor with him. A wizened, older elf who would have been judged to be enfeebled by all but the most suspicious eye, Corin doubted that a naïve little cat girl like Rainee would be able to tell the difference. And even if she could, it wouldn’t matter in the end.

The only thing permanent was power.
