The Crooked Knight

Name: Sketch
Age: ???
Race: Human?
Height: 6’
Weight: 145lbs
Occupation: Story Teller
Personality:
At first glance, Sketch appears to be a kind man with a love for stories and children. He loves nothing more than sitting around a fire telling the tales of far off kingdoms, leaving the children star struck. However, when the night darkens and the mists from the forests start to pour in, Sketch’s true personality comes through. Sketch has a deep love of driving sharp points of fear into people, and his favorite stories are those of the Grym.

History:
“A story can be made of beautiful things, but a Fable can only Nightmares bring.”

No one remembers who Sketch was before he started telling stories. All that anyone remembers is that he was covered in fresh earth with bruises around his neck as he walked into town out of the mists. Sketch himself only remembers waking up, lying on the pine needle strewn floor of the woods, with no memory at all.

Sketch had a knack for setting a scene and telling stories that would enthrall the listener, and he seemed to know an endless amount that he could spin into a fantastic myth or into a grisly tale depending on his mood. For months after wandering through towns, he was thought of as just a story teller of exceptional skill.

As he was wandering down the road towards the nearest town, he was beset one day by a band of roving thieves, minds set on taking not just his meager possessions but his life as well. Strangely, Sketch was calm and unafraid, and as he was faced with his own death at the end of a sharp blade, new yet familiar words came into his mind.

“Once there was a band of thieves, full of dark desire and purpose. Upon the roads the laid in wait for wandering travelers to lay low.”

As he spoke the words, the bandits halted in their tracks, feeling the malevolent energy coming from the storyteller, causing the day to grow dark and mists to pour out from the trees.

“They found a traveler on the road, alone and unguarded. They thought him easy prey, but they didn’t know that they had attracted the attention of dark and mysterious forces.”

The rogues stared at the mists, spellbound by the words coming out of the mouth of the lean man. As they stared, they could see dark forms through the edge of the fog, slowly walking towards them.

“They stared at the fog, seeing fleeting glimpses of dark things. The bandits grew still and silent as the strange fog crept towards them. They began to hear the clinking of metal and bone as the figures grew closer.”

From the mists, misshapen effigies of men wandered out into the unnatural darkness. Some had the faces of animals with grotesque proportions, others had carved pumpkins for a head, yet all of them had empty, hollow eyes that bored into the souls of the bandits.

“The bandits stared in disbelief as the figures drew close, their soulless, inhuman eyes drawing out a primal fear in the hearts of the men. The bandits dropped their weapons and fled, leaving all thoughts behind, except those of their own survival.”

The bandits let out a collective scream as the horrors drew close enough that they could smell their horrid stench. The bandits ran as fast as they could away, deep through the forests until they saw sunlight once again.

Sketch watched with a toothy grin on his face, staring into the faces of the Grym without fear. As one the monsters turned their faces towards the Storyteller as they retreated backwards into the fog, their mouths affixed in silent laughter.

One by one the shapes disappeared, the fog receded and the sunlight returned. Sketch felt a surge of strange emotions, both of elation at discovering something he’d felt important, and sorrow at the thought that he’d forgotten something even more vital. Sketch tried not to let the later thought worry him too much, after all, he’d become part of one of his best stories.

Appearance: Sketch is a Tall, lean man with a very pale complexion. He has dark eyes that are so deep a green, they look almost black. Around his neck is a permanent bruise. His short shaggy black hair is flecked with infrequent strands of grey, and his teeth are perfectly straight and clean. He wears a long black suit with grey pin stripes and matching black slacks. As a master storyteller, his voice is practiced and well-toned to sound pleasant.

Skills:
Knowledge of the Grym- Sketch has an extremely in-depth knowledge of legends, myths, folklore and fables, almost as if he’d been there to see them first hand.

Grym Tongue- Sketch can speak languages from many different parts of the world, and can pick up new once very quickly.

Master showman- Grim has a natural sense of how to get the perfect reaction from an audience when he tells a story, and knows exactly what parts need to be embellished.

Abilities:
The Grym are nightmares from legend, beings conjured from the unconscious fears of mankind. Often, they appear in stories as the inhuman villain, or the mysterious witch, but they always seem cause a slight tremble from even the bravest of heroes. The Grym feed on fear, and they love it when stories frighten people. These creatures seem to watch over Sketch as he travels, spreading their stories through the world.
Sketch’s connection to the Grym manifests in several ways

Dark Fable- Sketch can tap an inner darkness that he has deep inside him, a part that enjoys the looks of terror and fright on people. While utilizing this, he can conjure a dark phantasmal story in the minds of men, seeming as real as the world around them to instill a gripping fear in the victim. Sketch can instill fear on up to 5 targets at once that can cause them to either run away in fear or freezing in place. The targets must all be able to hear him, and the scene cannot extend past the range of his voice. Dark Fable's effect lasts for one post, and can be cast 4 times per post.

Grym Soldier- Sketch has a strange connection to the Grym, and they will come to protect him if he calls. While he calls them up as phantoms or illusions normally, he can summon a single Grym that is more corporeal and is able to interact with the world. Sketch can summon a Grym to fight for him, taking on a twisted appearance of Sketch’s choosing. These Grym have all the capabilities of a normal human, and have one iron weapon. Sketch can only have one corporeal Grym out at once, and it lasts until it's killed. Grym Soldier can only be cast three times a post.

Equipment/Weapons: Sketch has a pack, a lantern, a large book, a walking stick and a cloak.

Hi there! And welcome to Althanas!

Your character certainly looks really interesting.

Just a couple of questions:

Dark Fable: how long does this effect last on people? Is it just a gripping fear for a second or two, or one post, or is it a more permanent effect? What are people able to do whilst in fear, are they stunned or does it depend on the person?

Grym Soldier: By twisted aspect, do you mean appearance? I will need you to specify what level of metal they can use - though am I right in thinking a single iron weapon by mundane? How long does this grim last? Would it be until they themselves die?

Thanks so much! If you have any questions let me know.
