    Repairs, and a little extra

    (with my fren Rehtul Orlouge)

John muttered to himself. The ‘charm’ sitting on his table, in two pieces, was a family heirloom of some import to a nobleman living in Corone. John had forgotten his name already. To be honest, he hadn’t really been listening to the man’s name. He wasn’t as interesting as his armor, which sat in three pieces on the table. It was an ancient, decorative breastplate, which was imbued with “powerful protective magics” which enabled him to survive quite a large rockslide. The inside of the breastplate had faint markings, indicating both the age of the thing and a partial nature of the magic involved in its creation. He ran a finger over one of the few remaining distinct characters. Though he did not recognize it, he felt confident that his book held the knowledge required to make the repairs.

He stood, leaving the fragmented plate behind. The windows were open in his workshop, and afternoon was fading to evening. He opened his closet, and withdrew a large tome, covered with cloth. He removed the cloth, and ran his hand on the cover. ‘The Book’, as he called it, had its title worn away long ago. John had rebound the cover, now blank. Laying it down, he opened the book, looking for symbols similar to some of the ones on the interior of the armor. Like most magical artifacts from more than a century ago, there weren’t many books which explained what spells were involved in their creation, much less how to repair them when the enchantments went awry. Thankfully, the volume in front of him was kind of an encyclopedic manual for forging and crafting, magical and otherwise. A few of his techniques he used in his forging had been taken from the volume, and had helped immensely in improving his craft.

“Let’s see,” John said, flipping a page to where he needed. “A spell to increase resistance to injury…” He skimmed the section. Recognizing some of the symbols, he began to read more carefully.

“Repair of spells…residual energies....physical components...Tularan Greenwood?” John paused and read over the list of components again. Everything he had, except this wood.

But everything there was destroyed in the demon invasion…

    Wasn’t it?

Well he wouldn’t be getting any of it down at the general store in Radasanth, that was for sure. And if there was any in Tular, it would be hard to get, especially without some help.

    Maybe I should hire a mercenary…..

Someone would have to watch his back as he found this, if he could find it at all.

“Did you see the flier? A smith's going to the Tular Plains... needs a bodyguard,” one of the men at the next table over said to his slightly more inebriated partner. The other man snorted and shrugged his leathery shoulders as the old candles on the table flickered. He seemed completely uninterested in the job at all.

“Whazzat mean to us, Nicky? You stupid enough to go into the demon wastes?” he asked as he put his muck caked boots up on the table. He sighed and took a long swig of his flagon and turned back to his companion. “Seriously, what are we gonna do with the gold when we're dead... or worse...” The implication that possession was possible was almost enough to make Rehtul laugh as he eavesdropped on the conversation.

The ice mage sat at the old bar, alone, dressed in his usual flamboyant finest, but much dirtier than he usually liked to be. He'd been helping in the garden at the old family home and had come up to the bar for some chilled wine and time to think. Ever since that night he'd spoken with his sister, he'd been a mess. Spending any large length of time around his family would give away his inner thoughts, so he spent as much time away as possible.

“So, someone needs a bodyguard for a trip to Tular... I have been wanting to study the magical impact of the demonic invasion,” he said to no one in particular as he stood up and brushed off his shirt with a single hand. He finished his wine and slipped a tip onto the bar for the bartender. “You got any idea where this flier is?”

The bartender slipped a piece of paper across the bar as the coin disappeared into his pocket simultaneously. Without a word, Rehtul took the parchment and stuffed it into his own pocket. He disappeared out of the door to the inn.

A few hours later, Rehtul's horse had begun the slow ascent to the farmhouse advertised in the flier. He let the steady gait of the old girl echo up the dusty path as he took in the sights around him. There were no real plants to harvest. Not surprising considering that this place had apparently been repurposed for the use of a smith, though there were some apple trees in a grove not too far off the path.

“Should probably bring a few of those with us if this person expects to go by boat,” he said as he continued the slow ascent to the actual farm above. He appreciated the design. Whoever had redone the exterior new precisely where to put the vents to keep the interior from filling with deadly smoke, and there appeared to be a good amount of safety equipment nearby in case something did go wrong.

“I'm honestly impressed,” he said as he pulled up on his horse's head, bringing the chestnut mare to a trot and finally to a stop. He unhooked his leg from around her back and jumped to the ground with all the grace of a rockslide. The horse would probably have laughed at him if she could.

He sighed and took a last look around before he went up to the door to the smithy itself and knocked. He hadn't even considered that the other man might be in whatever constituted a sleeping quarters around here.

“I hear you're looking for help in Tular,” he said just loudly enough to hopefully be heard through the door.

John set aside the small map of the Tular plains and picked up his small glass of whiskey, taking a swig. The knocking at the door intruded into his thoughts, but the interruption was not entirely unwelcome. He had been studying the contours of the land, trying to think of a place where trees might have survived the invasion. According to rumor, there was nothing left of Tular but blasted landscapes. The only reliable source of information, though, aside from his own eyes of course, would be the ‘Queen of Exiles’, which the map referenced as a ruler or warlord in some respects. The news from her might even be fragmented, but even a vague direction would be better than wandering the plains looking aimlessly. He stood, draining the last of his glass of whiskey.

He bent down a little bit to grab the door handle, and turned away before he could see who it was that had come to help. He talked as he spoke, walking to a cabinet by the wood-fired stove, which currently supplied light and heat to the house.

“Aye, I need a hand out there. Whiskey?”

The half-giant didn’t wait for an answer, but grabbed a glass anyway. If he didn’t want any, it would just go unused. John sat back down and took his first look at the man. More of a boy, now that he looked at the primly dressed youth in front of him. Everything about him looked to be by the book and neatly done. He would have felt under dressed in his slightly soot-stained rough fabric and heavy leather boots. At least John didn't have any of his armor out, he didn't like to lead with his strange magical alloy.

“You can make the journey, yes?”
