    A Cake Walk [Closed]

    Mikael Leviasi ia Saiph
Location: Forest Regions near the City of Anebrilith

Another branch swatted away, Mikael nearly wondered if setting the whole forest ablaze would make his journey through the thickest part of the wooded area slightly bearable. Had he known that searching for his sister would require such effort perhaps he would had employed the use of more drastic means to get through the forest. His sourness had only grew when he had to abandon his horse by the road-side, the trees grew too close and made travel with any larger creature near impossible. Mikael gracefully moved through much of the larger roots of the trees and even as he batted away another branch full of leaves, more so out of anger than out of necessity, a small part of him enjoyed it. The stuffiness of the stone walls of his room held a certain suffocation that demanded him to escape somewhere open, somewhere without walls.

His urgency only doubled when he checked the map given to him by the small village he had passed on the way in search for Ayvriel. More so an outpost really, Mikael noted several armed merchants that had taken the news of possible undead quite serious. The young Elf was skeptical of such claims, but as he examined the map for the distance he just ran, they were nearing some of the nearby ruins of outermost City regions of Anebrilith. His feet pushed him further, his hands instinctively snapped to better adjust his center of gravity as he jumped over fallen trees, Mikael maintained a flow of movement that looked almost animalistic. His feet never seemed to slip or misplace itself on branches or upturned roots, likewise Mikael’s hands acted as perfect counterbalances to his body’s motions, adjusting his trajectory accordingly whenever he needed to swing off of branches or pushing himself off of larger tree stumps.

Mikael continued his speed for several minutes, his breathing slowly turned deeper and heavier but before his body demanded a slower pace, he slid to a stop. His feet scraped across the leafy ground below, and his eyes focused up ahead to several broken down outposts. A small clearing had been made by what Mikael could guess was nearly a decade ago as broken down barricades and old fire pits were slowly being overgrown by plant life around it and whatever had used this area was long gone or dead. Much like with most things, time always pushed life forward, to replace the destruction caused by those who wished only devastation, and it appeared almost poetic to see a few broken weapons and such slowly overtaken by the grass and trees surrounding the clearing.

What wasn’t like the rest of the encampment were several fresh and lithe footsteps, to which Mikael looked carefully where these tracks were headed. He knew he was following the semblance of a right trail, but once again he was late, perhaps there was a chance that Ayvriel would retrace her footsteps back to the old forgotten encampment. But, better I keep moving. . . The thought alone of being near the undead brought a small shiver down his spine and wanted to keep himself active. He looked further up ahead of the encampment and chose his next path, his legs bent low and Mikael launched himself again with frightening speeds. This time his run last for a few minutes rather than the near ten that almost sent him to his knees with heavy breathing.

Slowing himself, he walked to a stop, eyes scanning the area around him for signs of his sister, “Oh by the many gods, where are you Ayvriel. . .” Mikael droned to himself, while he wouldn't consider his current situation as aimless running, it was certainly a close consideration only separated by the technicality that Mikael had an aim to his running. Yeah, I didn't loose that book, I simply misplaced both it and the memory of its location.

    Ayvriel Leviasi ia Saiph
Location | Forest near the outskirts of the city formerly known as Anebrilith, Raiaera

Even as her brother suffered through the forest, a certain oblivious elf continued on with her merry meandering.

Alone and without a need for haste, Ayvriel ambled along at a gentle pace, her footfalls dainty and wary as she made her way through the forest. And perhaps it would have taken someone determined less than a day’s journey to reach her desired destination, but the fledgling spellsinger was satisfied with her headway.

With Hanya’ye in the care of the kind old lady who has given her shelter two nights prior, the elven maiden has wandered away from the safety of the sleepy village on her own, her leather bag containing her belongings swaying at her side. As she has always travelled with an escort, be it with a coterie of retainers or the presence of a protector, Ayvriel has never had to worry about the dangers that may lurk in the shadows. So when she had left for the northwest a day ago, the only matter that was on the her mind was the direction of the once city of Anebrilith.

Even as she stepped away from the dirt path and vanished amongst the verdant foliage, she knew not of the rumours that there were sighting of the undead hiding within the peaceful woods.

Her first day was quiet, with only the humming of insects and the whispers of leaves as her companions. When the silence became too much to bear, the elven maiden sang nonsensical ditties to herself, even as she wondered if she would ever grow familiar with the echo of loneliness that haunted her steps. It was during these moments between that she found it the thrums of melancholy and doubt stirring within her heart.

    I miss papa and mama…

    Am I truly ready?

It has only been a few days since she had left the gates of Tor Elythis, yet she was already yearning for home.

Perhaps it was the true reason as to why she was pursuing what her papa would call a fool’s errand. Ayvriel wanted to see for herself if their villa in Anebrilith was still standing… and if the music box she had forgotten could be found lying right where she left it, beneath the pile of pillows on her bed. Her mind told her that it was silly to even contemplate that something as delicate as a music box would remain untouched in the chaos that was the Corpse War. Her heart continued to hold a flicker of hope, borne from an unwavering wish that there was a faint chance that it may have remained unspoiled despite the war, despite the elements, despite scavengers.

Even if not, all she wanted was a piece of it.

After all, the music box was a gift, the final one that was given to her by Mika… and La’el.

So even with her trepidation and the realisation that she would have to endure much hardship, Ayvriel persisted on her course.

But even possessing the knowledge required for such an endeavour, with her lack of familiarity, the elven maiden used twice the time another being would have needed. She had spent the night at an abandoned encampment, amongst the decaying stockades and vine obscured hollows and rusted weaponries as she whispered old lessons learned under the bright moon, her eyes flickering towards any strange sounds.

Weary, but determined, Ayvriel had continued on her journey once dawn has arrived. The anticipation that she was close to the boundaries of the land that belonged to House Leviasi ia Saiph was the only reason she found the strength to quicken her steps. Though worn and frayed, the magic of their family sang to the fledgling spellsinger, welcoming her as she stepped across the imperceptible barrier.

    She was home.

Back to the place of halcyon days, before they were all touched by the pain and suffering wrought by war.

Back to the place of joyful memories, where their only worries were staining their clothing with the juice of summer berries.

    Mikael Leviasi ia Saiph
Location: Forest Regions near the City of Anebrilith

Spirited by an uneasiness, Mikael continued his sprint only following this vague notion he was heading in the correct direction. His body flowed like the very wind moving through the forest, his hands and feet pushing off from either the ground, trees and branches, the Elven noble despite himself, enjoyed the run. No stone walls or floors, no delicate statues or regulated gardens that must not ever be touched, no rules but simply the freedom to run to his heart’s content.

The single mindedness of the act was a breath of fresh air to Mikael, his brained had buzzed with thoughts and issues that only persisted to drive the young Elf insane. But for the time being, his body kept his mind at bay with his sprint through the forest. His breathing slowly turned heavier, and when Mikael realized he was laboring for his next intake of air he finally slowed to a walking pace. His hands folded behind the back of his head, expanding his chest to allow as much air as possible into his lungs. Mikael enjoyed the minute of relaxation before he finally stopped moving.

His breathing returned to normal, but there was a sense in the air, a certain magic any Elf would notice if they were sensitive to the world around them. A sensitivity that Mikael only acquired after his long run and pushing away the noise of all his problems, Mikael listened intently, it was something he remembered or rather something he should have remembered. A memory that Mikael wasn’t sure if it was either from a dream or a memory buried so deep into his past it might as well never had happened.

Mikael put his hand up and felt the wind rush through his parted fingers and with but a second later he followed and the direction of the wind. He knew of this forest and its surrounding location, but he had not ever remembered being here before but his body felt strangely confident that at least subconsciously he knew where he was headed. His eyes tracked the leaves slowly jostling with the wind, even his hair dared to misbehave and Mikael constantly had to push his hair away from his eyes.

The forest continued to grow ever expansive, and for a brief moment, Mikael grew worried. Nonsense for the most part, he figured that finding Ayvriel would not take long or much effort but the entire day seemed to go against such a notion. Nothing in his life could be easy, Mikael wondered about such claim and sighed softly. He knew he had no right to complain about the difficulties of his life, no reason at all and Mikael silently continued his brisk walk.

The hours passed by and finally Mikael found something, a pathway that was lined with evenly cut rock. Such effort made Mikael curious, he had no memory of some sort of village nearby, and military encampments would have made their paths with all stone to make their charts easier to roll. And there wouldn’t be so many trees, they wouldn’t waste time curving the path when they could knock them all down.
Similar with villagers, their pathways would be far more direct and not keen on keeping the trees that would ruin an easier direct path.

Mikael continued down the path and slowly something within his mind cropped up images of when he was a child. His hand reached outward to a nearby tree, with a gentle caress before continuing forward. The path led him to a large house, water surrounding much of the building and only a few direct paths led to the main building. Most importantly was the architecture, the iconic white stone that bore into Mikael’s memory back home. This was his family’s home, from when they would travel and get away from the bustle of the city or the heavy rainstorms that would follow the cold winter. I crossed the barrier without knowing? Mikael stood aback for a moment, No, I would have felt it but- Mikael frowned at the terrible implication.

This time he focused solely on the magic, even though it was old and nearly decades since it was last felt Mikael refused to believe he could simply miss it all together. The seals and the layer of magic was there, he could feel his family’s ancient magic through it all and with a small sigh Mikael looked around the area. He guessed this was where his sister had ran off to, and wondered how long she’s been here for Especially since she must’ve known where this place was exactly.

“Ayvriel!” Mikael shouted, “Ayvriel! Are you here?” Mikael asked as he drew closer to the door, oddly it was not locked and Mikael stepped inside. A soft laughter entered his mind as he remembered his brother and he running through the main living space for some reason or the other. A shake of his head Mikael focused on the collection of dust that littered the entire room and table space.

Old books, the fireplace to even the furnishing itself, it all held this sense of timelessness to it and if it weren’t for the fact it was coated with dust Mikael would have guessed nothing changed since he was a child. My Family’s magic is powerful indeed. Mikael realized, that despite the passage of time and all the chaos that had embroiled their homeland for decades, their family home remained near perfect, aside from all the dust. And I’m supposed to lead and wield our family, carve a path for us all in the future. Mikael continued to walk down the hall and search for his sister, if anything he figured he could simply wait for her here if he had somehow managed to get here before her.

“Ayvriel? By Aurient, grant me strength.” Mikael sighed as he called out for his sister yet again.

Location | Outskirts of the city formerly known as Anebrilith, Raiaera

Within the boundary charted by the magic of the Leviasi ia Saiph, the dense foliage of the woods began to recede as Ayvriel wandered deeper into her family’s estate. From the wild growths of trees unknown, the once nurtured gardens began to emerge in its faded splendour. In the years of neglect, white lilies that lined the edges of the villa were now flourishing amongst the roots of graceful silver birch, while honeysuckle vines began to entangle itself amongst its branches.

Still beautiful, but there was an unmistakable air of abandonment to it.

Delicately, wary of being pricked by the cruel thorns that adorned the rose trees, the elven maiden made her way past the wrought iron gates and followed a moss-riddled path that lead her towards where the kitchens were. The once majestic villa were almost veiled beneath wisteria, with only a gleam every now and then that hinted at the windows that laid under its tangle.

A small alcove was soon to be seen. And while it may have been a servant’s entrance, it was also close to her favoured hiding spot, where Ayvriel would stay hidden for hours, imagining herself to be a ferocious dragon who was protecting her collection of treasures. But her little cave of rhododendrons and azaleas allowed her a clear view of the kitchen goings and comings, and she knew very well where the servants hid the spare key to the foyer.

Despite being alone, the fledgling spellsinger moved aside an old weathered jar with an assured flourish, a small triumphant smile curving her lips when she uncovered it. The key may have dulled and became tarnished over the years, with spots of rust and verdigris staining its surface, but it still retained its shape nevertheless.

With her prize in hand, Ayvriel made her way towards the front of the villa, her nose wrinkling at the amount of lily pads and algae that covered the ponds as her boots walked carefully over the bridges. Perhaps one day, when Raiaera has healed a little more, she would return here and see the home of their childhood returned to its former majesty.

Touched only by the passage of time, the large doors moved inward, casting a resounding creak into the air as it did. Perhaps the elven maiden should be more wary, but with thoughts of their halcyon days of past dancing through her mind, Ayvriel found a streak of impulsiveness threading through her person.

Forgetting the need for patience and care, her steps rang bold and bright as she strode across the foyer, leaving imprints of her footfalls in the layer of dust that had lain undisturbed until today. Even as motes of dust swirled through the air in her wake, sparkling in the beams of the descending sun, the smile that Ayvriel has worn since she has found her way here grew sweet with nostalgia. She remembered the many many times she had ran down these halls as she chased after her brothers, even after being told not to by their doting parents.

The elf with the starlight hair ascended the grand stairs, following the passage towards the bedroom of her childhood. What was once draped in cream and lavender has now faded to shades of grey, as her room remained untouched by the hands of nature nor sentient, it mattered not.

    As it meant…

Ayvriel moved the pillows aside, her heart fluttering where her eyes fell upon a box in the hues of pale blue. It was what she made the journey for, this roughhewn music box with uneven sides and painted by unsteady hands. Even while it was made poorly, it held a special place in the core of her very being, as it was the last gift made for her by Mikael and Yvrael.

Holding her breath, as though even a whisper of air upon the box would cause it to crumble, the elven maiden opened its lid, wondering if its mechanism still worked. With Selana smiling upon her favoured child, a tinny and out-of-tune music began to tinkle–

    “–riel…”

    Was it?

Cradling the music box in her arm, Ayvriel retraced her steps, peering from behind a wall and over the balustrade to where the familiar voice echoed from.

“Mika!” the fledgling spellsinger exclaimed, blinking as she moved to look at her brother from a floor above. As always, she was filled with warmth and adoration for a sibling she barely saw. Though his appearance here brought about a well of puzzlement within her as well, for she knew that he was supposed to be ensconced in Tor Elythis.

She made her way towards her brother, her smile vivid and guileless as she stood before him. “How did you know I was coming here?” There were so many questions to be asked, but this was the one at the vanguard of her thoughts.

His fingers reached carefully around a small statue, some of the dormant magic within stirred but Mikael only felt the cold and dusty metal when he wrapped his hands around. Narrowed eyes of blue he inspected the bronze statue with bored interest, a few moments passed and he gently placed the dusty statue back down. The young Elf rubbed his fingers, smoothly rubbing away the dust away as Mikael walked towards a different set of shelves that held several rows of books and manuscripts.

Mikael ran his fingers across the spines of the books, a few he read the title and slowly he realized that all of these were copies from their own library back home. With an eyebrow raised he continued to idly read the titles of the copies, discovering many were of the old magic and further studies of how magic and elves were one and the same, but as his fingers slid across the many books he stopped on one that was quite unlike the others.

Stories for children, the many tales of Juras, the Mighty Dragon of the Cold Mountains, to the Mermaids of the Deep Sapphire Seas and one strange book of a Cat and Mouse.

Distant childish laughter echoed in Mikael’s memories as he peered closer at the children books, they were all dusty as the rest but his hand reached for one regardless and when held it Mikael quickly cleaned the book of all its dust. The glossy cover of the children’s book was dulled but the metallic color and soft imprints of the characters remained nearly preserved. His curiosity growing, Mikael carefully opened the book and delicately traced the words printed on the pages with his finger, reading each word in his head as he did so. . . It was one of his favorites, a story of a lonely elf finding friends and discovering a family.

Mikael closed the book, he placed the book back and turned to hear the sound of his own name, and footsteps that quickly followed. Who. . .

As if appearing out of thin air his sister stood before him, her smile and matching sapphire eyes as the two shared a quick moment of silence. Though the older sibling, Mikael always forgot how much shorter his sister was when compared to most Elves her age.

With most of his surprise finally ebbing away, Mikael finally found his sister after all his running and searching, he spoke “I didn’t know where you were headed. I was only looking for you because I have a favor to ask but-” Mikael explained, “-When I heard from the nearby village that an aloof elf was heading near the City of Anebrilith I went to go search for you.” Mikael added, his eyes turned to scan his sister to make sure she hadn’t injured herself.

Their mother had mastered healing magic with so many opportunities to practice due to a certain child, so Mikael was simply behaving out of pure reflex and instinct.

Taking a few steps, he slowly circled Ayvriel, his hands clasped behind his back, “-There has been sightings of undead nearby, and yet you marched into the forest.” Mikael spoke, his voice low as he attempted to soften his approach.

He looked up and down his sister, next he gently raised her arms and checked for any cuts or wounds before he walked back to face her and placed his hands gently on her face to inspect for any signs of corruption or wounds on her temple and beneath her hair.

“Hold still,” Mikael instructed as he peered closer but being sure to be gentle as he inspected Ayvriel’s head. His thumbs gently caressed her cheekbones and his palms warmed with magic as he checked for any irregularities. Once done with that portion he finally placed the back of his hand on her forehead to check for any fevers, his nodded once, assured his sister was physically okay.

Mikael focused back on Ayvriel with his own azure eyes before suddenly he clasped both his hands on either side of her face.

He pressed into both her cheeks, squishing her face slightly as he spoke clearly, “-Why did you just go somewhere dangerous with just yourself?” Mikael asked, his eyes narrowed as his voice turned from concern to the serious tone their father would use on them decades ago.

    A favour?

Even as Mikael regarded her, his sapphire eyes intent, the smile she graced him with became soft and fond. With her head inclined and gaze adoring, Ayvriel drank in the sight of her brother, for the last time they were together was over the celebrations of the winter solstice.

His form poised and his demeanour calm, the older elf appeared unchanged over the months they have been apart. A familiar moue found its way to her lips when he began to walk, casting a shadow over her fair mien and inadvertently drawing her thoughts to their stature. Even in her heeled boots, the heir and scion of the Leviasi ia Saiph towered over her.

But his words chased away the gossamer wisps of her vexation.

“Oh,” she replied in a faint voice, chastised.

Her pallor became pale as she began to realise the folly of her little jaunt. Even when she has made mention of her intent to wander through the woods towards Anebrilith to quite a few curious villagers who has spoken to her, none of them has mentioned that there has been sightings of the undead. It was only with Mikael’s voiced insight that it dawned on the spellsinger that she did remember wondering to herself as to why the villagers seemed faintly ill of ease.

“I did not hear any news of the undead when I was in the village…” Ayvriel uttered, her words leaving her in a hesitant manner as she knew it was a poor reasoning. A sour tendril of guilt coiled low in her belly, as the gentle murmur of her brother’s voice only meant he was worried for her wellbeing. Finding herself regretful, her crystalline eyes were cast towards the ground as she apologised, “Forgive me for my imprudence, Mika.”

The fledgling spellsinger was still and silent as she allowed the older elf to assess her form, her heart warmed by his act of care. Her arms were taken in his hands as he checked for tears and wounds, her head was raised as his piercing gaze continued on its unrelenting trail over her person. Be it providence, be it the stars guiding her, the maiden found her way to the villa unharmed, never wiser as to the dangers that lurked behind the foliage.

Ayvriel preserved a solemn mien, until the soothing whisper of her brother’s familiar magic coursed through her own magical pathways. Even while the maiden has anticipated the calm sea and clear skies sensation lacing with her own, it made her the tip of her nose itch. Closing her eyes as she wrinkled her nose in hopes of alleviating the tingling, the subtle shift escaped her… until a warmth cupped her face–

    Eep!

–and squished her cheeks without any mercy.

And his stern demeanour and firm lilt only quailed her.

“I– I was looking for this,” she stammered, her words spilling out with a faint lisp even as she raised her precious treasure and held it carefully towards Mikael. The music box was worn, its pale blue faded and revealing peeks of its original lightwood. But even then, one could see the filigree traces of silver vines that once adorned it. “I wanted to have a token of… us… before I truly started on my journey.”

Ayvriel peered up at her brother from between her lashes, looking imploringly at him in silent hopes that he would understand and forgive her.

“If I knew, I would have been more careful!” she was swift to add. “Why did you come after me anyway? When I asked after you, mama mentioned that you were still deep in your studies… and that you were not be leaving home for the foreseeable future.”

    Us.

    Us.

Mikael’s eyes fell to the object his sister had ventured so far for, a music box old and worn. The wood had nearly lost all of its painted colour, but Mikael could still make out the delicate designs of silver that decorated the gift. His hands fell to either side of Mikael, his body took a step back to allow his sister some room maneuver.

Ayvriel’s explanation continued as Mikael listened silently, his eyes fixated on the old music box as he slowly nodded his head. The ordeal of searching through the entire forest, simply for an old gift, was something Mikael realized that only his sister would do, to cherish something from back then.

Mikael slowly remembered giving the music box to her all those years back, perhaps the old magic within the summer house prompted his memories, his brother had wanted to make the summer solstice be memorable to their young sister. Mikael remembered the hassle and energy it had gone to find the gold needed to purchase such a well handcrafted music box, but what took the longest had been finding the right music.

If Mikael could close his eyes, he could almost make out his brother’s frustrated voice, unhappy with the fourth music selection. They had been determined to find the right one, their sister’s favorite music. . . Ayvriel then asked Mikael why he was here and he shook off the momentary memory.

“You’re perfectly healthy, if not a bit thin on muscle,” Mikael responded.

“-And the undead were only a couple reanimated corpses, nothing we elves couldn't handle, but remember what Father would say about being caught off guard and unaware.” He explained his worry to Ayvriel.

He looked around their old home for a moment, before walking towards and sitting on one of the couches, “And yes, I was to be kept busy for the next couple months, but I instead chose to spend some months with you.” Mikael explained rather matter of factly.

With perhaps only a moment's notice given to his parents, Mikael wondered how long before they send a message and demand him to return back home. His escapade would only gain more attention the longer he went on without sending another message. Ayvriel may have wandered through the forest unaware, but Mikael had gambled on much worse odds when he ventured out. Remember, you need Ayvriel to agree with your plan if you don’t want to go back home.

“So,” Mikael started, his head turned to face his sister as his voice softened tremendously, “-Perhaps you wouldn’t mind some company for the start of your journey?” He asked.

Mikael hoped she wouldn’t pry too deeply into his reasoning, and with any luck he figured he could get Ayvriel to send a message back home to their parents before she herself finds out that her strict older brother may have broken a rule and dissented slightly from their parents.

Else, I’d never hear the end of it.

“You needn’t worry about bringing any extra supplies, I have brought enough provisions to last us quite a bit should we go somewhere with little to no towns.”
