    August Vignette

    Welcome to the August Vignette!

    Prompt

Your character is faced with a difficult challenge of a magnitude never experienced before. How do they handle it? Do they overcome the challenge, or fall to its difficulties? How has it changed them?

    Rules

    1. One submission per character.

    2. All entries have to be within the declared period. Editing your post and completely changing your submission is okay as long as all the edits occur before midnight EST on the closing day.

    3. The moderator judging the monthly vignette contest may post a vignette at the end, but will not be eligible for first or second place.

    4. Only on-topic vignettes are liable for rewards. The topics are broad enough that no character should be particularly limited.

    5. PCs must be involved in all vignettes. How "canonical" you choose to have the events of the vignette is up to you.

    6. All participants receive EXP. The top two finishers also receive GP. (Clarification: this excludes off-topic submissions, as per Rule 4).

    7. Entries are assessed on the following merits:

Use of topic: Did the writer use the topic, or write something completely random and off topic?

Creativity: Did the writer make something unique out of the topic or was it more cliche?

Mechanics: Basic writing mechanics: spelling, grammar, punctuation, word usage, etc.

    Notes: Additional comments.

Mikael wondered how long it had been since he first started his ‘descent’. After all, falling for any insufferable amount of time had ruined his perception of reality. For as far he could tell a minute and an hour felt like either, he was encompassed in total darkness and even sound only came from his own making. No wind, no anything else.

    Just falling.

Before in the start he had screamed, even conjured several spells in anticipation of hitting the ground below. After perhaps several minutes he couldn’t hold his spells for that long and it soon became clear that he was falling for an unusual amount of time.

    Falling.

Mikael couldn’t tell if he’s falling faster, even as he positioned himself differently, worst yet since he couldn’t see the bottom he couldn’t perfectly time when to use his magic to soften the landing. It was strange, the whole thing and Mikael wasn’t sure what to do, he attempted to push himself closer to any sides of the walls but could never reach anything except empty air.

He lost track of time, or rather the sense of time, not even his own voice sounded real to him. It was almost dream-like, this fall, but the young Elf knew better. Because of course Mikael knew better, he always knew better, he was taught and trained to know better.

    Why?

    Because I am better.

Even the thought sounded more question than fact, but for the purpose of securing himself Mikael accepted his own slight stumble. Even falling for all this time, Mikael felt sure. . . certain, he felt certain.

Mikael began to grow angry, this sort of falling was simply impossible, and even if he had been put into some sort of hallucination or worse, a sort of abstract plane of magic, there had to be a sort of a finite end. Or at least a response to my magic. He had yet to study on the different planes of existence, but he vaguely recalled that connection to one’s own magic would have been cut.

And I can still use my Magic. Hallucinations were something else entirely, but even then Mikael was more than positive that wasn’t the case, those types of magic had a reason for them and Mikael was sure his dispel rune he had inscribed on himself would have activated by now. He was certain of at least his own magical ability.

    He was certain.

Mikael was sure that at least a full day had passed, he had been able to lull himself into a sleep trance for a few hours but yet nothing had changed. He began to squirm and slowly thought that perhaps he was in a hallucination, and his rune hadn’t worked.

He had understood anger, his own particular anger just fine, but despair was something different. Mikael knew himself, he knew this was something he could conquer, so there was no need to feel despair, or fear for that matter. Then why do I have this feeling then? Anger soon replaced his most immediate emotion, it was a familiar feeling to feel anger towards himself, and for that Mikael somewhat welcomed that notion.

If this was a hallucination there needed to be a way out a way to beat this spell.
