    Required Character Information

In the past, we required a whole host of information at registration, including character demographics, appearance and history. While that information is useful and we encourage you to include it in your profile, it is no longer required. If you want to play an unnamed hero with an unknown past, be our guest. However, in general you'll find the more detail you put into the character at registration, the easier it is to write.

That said, the only information we require in a profile to be approved is:

    1) Your Character's Skills
    2) Your Character's Abilities
    3) Your Character's Equipment

New: When you post a new registration, you must add a prefix for your thread, "[New]" or "[Update]." If you're approved, the moderator will change the prefix to "[APPROVED]." If you're unapproved, or abandon your profile (we usually leave them up for a month), the moderator will change the prefix to "[UNAPPROVED]"

    Skills

Skills are subjective (non-tangible) traits that are based solely on your character's knowledge that do no have a direct affect on another character in competitive RP.

Common skills include swordplay or marksman. While being a skilled swordsman might allow your character to engage in more advanced posturing and attack patterns, it is the intrinsic character traits (such as strength, agility, speed, and endurance) that are directly affecting the other character.

SKILLS ARE NOT MODERATED BY THE REALM OF GREETING. This means we'll never say no to a skill, but they still must be listed in your profile. SKILLS ARE MODERATED BY JUDGES. If you are caught powergaming (playing beyond your character level) or bunnying (determining the action of another character without permission (i.e. autoing)) in competitive roleplay, the judge will reduce your score accordingly. We also don't regulate the adjectives attached to the skill (such as beginner, apprentice, master, etc.), regardless of how unrealistic it might be. You can use any qualifier you want, provided it is not a masked ability.

The reason we don't regulate skills in the Realm of Greeting is because we don't want to limit you into a particular character archetype. If you want to play a grizzled old war veteran from Alerar with advanced combat skills, or play an apprentice baker from Corone, we want you to have the opportunity to do so on Althanas. Both types of characters, while varying widely in terms of history and experience, are more than welcome on the site.

    Abilities

Abilities are non-subjective (tangible) actions, attributes or traits that can have a direct affect on another character.

ABILITIES ARE REGULATED BY THE REALM OF GREETING. Abilities are usually split into two types: active and passive abilities. Active abilities are abilities that are actively cast, such as a fireball, whereas passive abilities are inherent character traits, such as increased speed and magical defense.

We don't force player to describe abilities in a certain manner. You can write them up however you want. For instance, if you wanted your character to have increased speed, you could write "my character can run at speeds of up to 60 MPH," "my character can run as fast as a cheetah" or "my character is 3x faster than normal human." All three versions are acceptable, and in my example, they are all essentially the same thing.

    Ability Power Levels

All abilities are assigned an initial power level by the moderator. This initial determination considers only the affect of the ability. We use the following scale to determine the power level:

    Power Level Chart

    1) Weak
    2) Below Average
    3) Average
    4) Above Average
    5) Somewhat Strong
    6) Strong
    7) Very Strong
    8) Super Strong
    9) Strongest
    10) Innate
    11) Extreme

These terms are intentionally non-specific, but in general a weak ability is an ability that has a very minimal impact on another character. An average ability is equivalent to the abilities of a normal human being. An extreme ability is a defined as an ability so powerful that the only way to reasonably dodge or defeat it is to powergame (i.e. reverse powergaming). Because they are reverse powergaming, extreme abilities are never permitted.

After we have determined your initial power level, we will modify it depending on any listed weaknesses. The amount of adjustment depends on the nature of the weakness. For instance, a fireball that travels at the speed of a baseball (~60 MPH) is likely a 5. However, if you put additional limits on the fireball, such as it can only be used three times per day, it likely drops it down to a 2 or a 3, despite the fact that a regular human cannot innately cast a fireball. This is why you often get asked by a moderator to put some type of qualifier or limiter on your abilities. Like when describing effects, we don't limit you when describing weaknesses. Weaknesses and limiters can be described in a narrative, as an attribute or even per post or thread, if you prefer. We also consider character weaknesses that would apply to all abilities (such as a character being blind).

After we've considered weaknesses, we'll determine the final power level for each ability.

Power levels started out rather subjectively, but since the release of Althanas 3.0 the staff has compiled an encyclopedia of abilities and their corresponding power levels. Now, there are very few abilities that we haven't seen. When assigning a power level, the moderator will perform a search of that encyclopedia to find a similar ability to assign it the same power level. Thus, all abilities are comparable to similar abilities. Instead of releasing the entire encyclopedia, which is terribly formatted and difficult to traverse, we've decided to provided you with a listing of the power levels of the most common abilities and weaknesses on Althanas. You can use it as a guide to predict your TPL. In the interest of expediency, a moderator is not required to provide you with a breakdown of your ability power levels, but they will if you ask.

In the past, we considered magical "schools," where one base ability (like control over water) could cause a number of affects (water spouts, freezing water, etc.). We also looked for stacked and sequential abilities. Overtime, we realized that was inefficient. Now, we follow a standard rule:

    1 ABILITY = 1 EFFECT

We do not directly regulate the number of abilities a character has (allowing for both specialist and jack of all trades archetypes), but we do regulate the total power level of a character.

    Advanced Abilities

Some abilities, such as boosts, break the system. Please see the FAQ below for information on how we handle them.

    Total Power Level (TPL)

Calculating your total power level is easy, we just add up your individual power levels.

The following is the maximum power level you can have at each level:

    Level : Total Power Level

    1 : 15

    2 : 30
    3 : 45
    4 : 60
    5 : 75
    6 : 90
    7 : 100
    8 : 110
    9 : 120
    10 : 130
    11 : 135
    12 : 145
    13 : 155
    14 : 165
    15 : 175
    16 : 180
    17 : 185 (Only available VIA a Level Break)
    18 : 190 (Only available VIA a Level Break)
    19 : 195 (Only available VIA a Level Break)
    20 : 200 (Only available VIA a Level Break)

So, as you can see, a character starts relatively weak, quickly gains power until level 10, then tapers at higher levels like a traditional RPG. You can have any combination of abilities so long as your power level does not exceed the TPL for your level. For instance, at level one, you could have 15 level 1 abilities, five level 3 abilities, or one level 7 and one level 8 ability. Again, you have lots of flexibility here.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO MAXIMIZE TPL! Any power level is acceptable at any level provided it does not exceed the TPL for that level.

    Game Logic

An unintended result of Althanas 3.0 was shift in our game logic to base attributes. Unless you indicate differently in your profile, this is how we define specific base statistics.

Speed: Defines the maximum speed at which a character can move.

Strength: Defines the maximum output of force a character can generate.

Endurance: Defines a character's ability to recover and persist (also called Stamina and a handful of other things)

Perception: Defines a character's ability to perceive its world using its senses.

Agility/Reflexes: Defines a character's quickness, including balance, flexibility, isolation and stability (also called dexterity and a handful of other things)

Defense: Defines a character's ability to accept damage, including pain tolerance and innate armor (stronger bones, denser muscles, etc.)

    Equipment

In general, we allow new characters to start with:

    1) One Large Weapon (such as a sword or a bow)
    2) One Small Weapon (such as a dagger or a dirk)
    3) One Set of Armor (Head, Torso, Legs, Boot)
    4) Ten moderated items (such as poison, or darts)

All starting equipment must be tier 1 or less in the Bazaar. These materials include:

    Copper
    Bronze
    Iron
    Real World Woods (like Oak)
    Real World Hide (like Leather)
    Bone
    Calli Glass

Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages, so be sure to check the Bazaar FAQ for a breakdown.

Moderated items available to new members include:

    Arrows
    Darts
    [ADD POISONS]

Please note these items are still subject to the tier limits described above.

Moderated items that are not available to new members include:

    Bullets
    Mtech Cartridges
    Vehicles (Chariots, Ships, Airships)

There are multiple types of darts, poisons and ships available. Please see the Bazaar FAQ for more information!

Common items, even if they could be made into items that would affect another character, are not moderated. This includes ropes, threads, bags, etc. Similarly, common clothing such as cotton, denim and burlap is not moderated. The reason for this is because it is very unlikely your character would have time in a competitive battle to assemble the items in such a way to harm your opponent. To regulate each item individually within the Realm of Greeting would be very time consuming. Instead, the judges will deduct points as appropriate in threads.

Occasionally, on a case by case basis at the discretion of a moderator, you might be approved with higher tiered starter equipment if you're willing to sacrifice power level. There are no guidelines for this, but the moderators will document all instances so that we stay consistent with subsequent requests.

    Character Updates

From time to time, you might want to update your profile as you level up or obtain new gear. In general, the abilities you are approved with are locked until you level up again. There are a few exceptions to this, such as when you gain a new ability from a quest. Thus, character updates come in two flavors: level and mid-level updates.

Mid-Level Updates: As the name suggests, mid-level updates are updates that are posted at anytime, usually in the middle of a level gain. In a mid-level update, you are allowed to change minor biographical details and add history, but in general your character cannot change. If you add new equipment, you must provide a link to where it was obtained (either as a spoil, transfer or purchased from the bazaar). New abilities are not allowed unless they are rewarded as a spoil from a quest. The ability will be run through the power level calculation described above. If the ability does not push your character over the TPL for its level, you will be approved.

Level Updates: Level updates are updates that are posted after level ups. In a level update, you are allowed to add, remove and change abilities to a certain extent. As your TPL will increase, so you might want to use the update to add abilities. Added or strengthened abilities are run through the power level calculation described above. If the ability does not push your character over the updated TPL for its level, you will be approved. If abilities are significantly changed or removed, a moderator might ask you to provide a link to a thread wherein the change was developed. If you are unable to provide a link, we might not approve your character. If you add new equipment, you must provide a link to where it was obtained (either as a spoil, transfer or purchased from the bazaar).

We typically do not allow complete character overhauls or re-rolls on Althanas. While you might tire of a character and wish to change it, we don't allow this because it could be abused to put you at an unfair advantage over your peers in competitive RP. Imagine being able to change your character at will between each round of a tournament to counter your opponents attacks and minimize its defenses. Exceptions have been made, usually in cases where the player is trying to change to an NPC that is heavily utilized in his or her writing. We will evaluate these requests on a case by case basis. Otherwise, we will ask you to recreate a new character or reincarnate your current one. Notes on reincarnation are in the next section.

    Character Reincarnation

Eventually, you might grow tired of your character or its build. Recognizing that literary pursuits often change, Althanas allows you a method of creating a new character without having to start your level progression over. We call this process reincarnation. Character reincarnation is different from character retirement, which is discussed in the next section. The process for reincarnation is simple. All you need to do is post a new character profile and mention it is a reincarnation of an existing character.

When you reincarnate, your new character will start with 50% of the EXP of your previous character. GP and AP is transferred in full. Keep in mind, though, that when you reincarnate, the old character becomes unapproved and it can no longer be played in the moderated RP sections of the forum. It can still be played in Kebiras and Melnach and the Althanaverse. The character may continue to be used as an NPC, but it cannot be the focus of any new stories and it cannot be used in competitive RP.

Here are a few quick reminders regarding reincarnation:

    1) Reincarnated characters receive 50% of the EXP of the old character.
    2) GP and AP is transfered in full.
    3) Reincarnation is permanent! You cannot change your mind after your new character has been approved without reincarnating again (and therefore losing 50% more EXP).
    4) There is no limit to the number of times you reincarnate your character; however, your EXP will be halved each time you do it.
    5) Old versions of characters can still be referenced as NPCs, but they cannot be the focal point of stories in moderated RP and it cannot be used in competitive RP.
    6) Character updates that make significant changes to a character might be deemed reincarnations. This determination is made at the discretion of the moderator with confirmation by administration.
