General Description: Arrazak is a dense, mostly jungle filled island. Its primary inhabitants are the Avens (bird people) and the wood elves, both of which are tribal creatures that roam the jungle in various tribes. The outer rim the island is beach. The beach extends to about half a mile in the island where it is quickly swallowed by jungle. Located on the beach is the Termina trading post where merchant ships come in and the majority of trading is done. The terrain if the jungle is very uneven rising and falling seemingly randomly. It is filled with dense trees and various exotic plants and animals (see: Bestiary for more information on this). In the center of the jungle are the Rakash ruins. About 20 miles south of the ruins is the nations capital Xanith. In the canopy one is likely to see large tree houses, and occasionally a whole tree village. These are the homes of the avens. On the ground the elves live in mud huts and tents and are more likely to be found living in large groups, and villages than the Avens. How friendly or hostile the tribes are often depends on the individual tribe though the elves are often more welcoming of visitors than the avens.

Place: Xanith
Size: Approximately 150 square miles
Description: Xanith is the largest (and only) city in Arrazak. It is one of the few places where Avens and Wood elves live together. Most of the homes and buildings are made of clay though there a few made of wood. The city contains numerous trading posts as well as farms. The main attraction of this city is Xanith tower, which is a large five story tower where laws are made that govern all tribes of either or both of the main races. The tower is where Chief Derma Marivel and Chief Xanbar Varog meet to discuss numerous policies and laws the effect the entire nation. In addition to this, the city is also where the barracks and the training grounds for the nation’s armed forces are trained.

Place: Rakash Ruins
Size: Approximately 2.5 square miles
Description: Desolate and mysterious, the ruins are carved out of black obsidian. It is the ruins are deep and extend for miles underground, and contain numerous traps but also tons of treasure. The avens believe that these ruins are the home to one of the gods and thus the ruins are sacred to them. Trespassing on these grounds is a crime punishable by death to the avens. At any given time there are always three armed aven warriors guarding the ruins, any creature that sets foot on in the ruins is killed instantly and their corpse is mounted on a wooden spike near the parameter as a warning to other would be intruders.

Place: Termina Trading Post
Size: Approximately 1.5 square miles
Description: Named after its human founder, John Termina, the Termina Trading Post is the largest trading post in Arrazak. It doubles as a port that for docking the various merchant ships that visit the place. The trading post also contains numerous stalls where a variety of goods are sold and traded for. There is one is a small building where the founder and his workers stay year round to keep the trading post in good shape. Founded only about 35 years ago, the Termina trading post is still relatively new to the nation of Arrazak.

History of Arrazak: It is said that millions of years ago when the planet was still in its infancy that Veldor the aven god of the air and Zulma the elfin god of the earth fell in love and had a child and from Zulma’s great womb the land Arrazak was born along with all the creatures on it. To help protect her lovely child Zulma created the wood elves. To help protect the land Veldor created the avens. Of course nobody knows for sure if this is true or not, but that is how the story goes.

Due to the lack of written documentation of events details on what is actually known to have happened in Arrazak’s history are scarce and hard to find. It is known that about 2,000 years ago a great civil war broke out between the avens and the wood elves for control over the nation. The exact specifics on how or why this war got started, or the events leading up to the war are unknown. However it is known the war lasted about 4 years during which both sides suffered severe casualties but neither side neither having a distinct advantage over the other nor willing to surrender. Luckily the chiefs of the warring factions realized this and decided to work out a piece treaty. They met in an old clay hut that would later be transformed into Xanith tower. Once the peace treaty was made the two leaders decided that they must not allow such a travesty as that war to happen again. The two leaders decided that there must be some way for the two races to exist and cooperate in order to prevent another war. It was from this that the shared monarchy of the nation was formed. The area became the center for most important meetings between the two races so it was only natural that the building became the location of Arrazak’s capital and the city of Xanith formed around it.

The next 1945 years are a blur. Studies from scientist and tales told by the tribes suggest not much had happened. There were a few minor battles between various tribes but in Arrazak this was a common occurrence and nothing big happened. However archeologist and scientist have discovered one interesting thing. About 900 years ago a band of about 30 humans tried to create a settlement in the jungles. Yet the settlement disappeared and the humans all died. Evidence suggest that the harsh environment combined with numerous diseases and other such things that the humans didn’t know how to handle was what killed off the humans. Yet the ruins left of the settlement suggest that something else did them in. The signs of battle and the fact that it most of what was found was severely burned suggests that that the humans did something to anger one of the tribes and a battle ensued that spelled the end of the settlement. Who the humans were and why they tried to make a settlement in Arrazak is unknown.

Just over 50 years ago the population of Arrazak started making contact with the other nations. At first this started out because explorers and scientist would venture into the jungles to study the exotic plant and animal life. Naturally it was unavoidable that these humans, drows, and high elves would encounter the aven and the wood elves. These explorers and scientist would return to their home nations and share their findings. This of course intrigued a lot of merchants who couldn’t help but think of the exotic and more importantly valuable goods such a strange uncharted land could hold. Unfortunately while a few merchants were able to trade successfully and become rich off the land most perished in their quest. The lack of trading routs combined with the intense heat, disease and unknown wild life spelled the end for many merchants and their employees who ventured into the nations harsh jungles.

A young explorer turned merchant named John Termina realized this. Him and his father, Bill Termina, had struck it rich by trading. Unfortunately John’s father ended up succumbing to a disease he caught in the jungle. When this happened John inherited his father’s company and fortune and decided to use those resources to create the Termina trading post 15 years later after establishing trade connections with numerous tribes, as well as mapping out some of the less treacherous paths to Xanith and various villages.

The Avens
General physical description: The males are generally large usually reaching heights around 6’5” to 7’1” on average. They have thick shoulders, thick chest, wide wings and large wingspans. The long that cover their backs are usually dark green. The short, softer feathers of their undersides are a light blue. Females on the other hand are smaller more lithe creatures. They generally range in height from about 5’10” to 6’7”. They have much more slender bodies and wings. Also unlike humans, elves, and whatnot the female avens have no breast, as their bodies do not produce milk. Also the females do not give live birth instead the females lay eggs just like any other species of bird. The feathers on the back of the female avens are generally dirty brown where as the feathers on the underside are white with black spots. All avens have six limbs; 2 wings, 2 arms and 2 legs. The feet of the avens have three toes in the front and two in the back. These feet look and act as talons, just like that of any predatory bird such as a hawk or owl. The downside to these talons is that it makes it hard for the avens to walk and thus all avens have a very slow running speed and are almost incapable of running at all. The feathers on the underside of the avens wings have a unique ability, in that the avens can control and move each feather individually so as to catch the wind currents in the way the aven wants. This gives the avens excellent grace and maneuverability in the air. Like most birds of prey the avens have sharp hook beaks. This makes it hard for them to talk most languages other than their native avena though most avens can sqawk out at least some form of broken tradespeak.
Society type: Male dominated hunter-gatherer society.
Physical attributes: All avens have incredibly keen eyesight equal in approximation to about 3 times that of your standard human. Also their necks have far fewer bones than that of a human or elf’s so they are able to turn there necks a little over 170 degrees in either direction. This helps compensate for the fact that avens like all birds cannot roll their eyes even the slightest bit. Avens also have incredible night vision and are capable of almost as well in the dead of night as they can in broad daylight. The males are slightly stronger than a lot of races being about 1.25 times stronger than your basic human male. This only applies to the males however as the females generally have about the same strength as their human counter parts. In flight and in general the females are much more nimble than the larger male avens. Also because of their smaller size the female avens are faster fliers than the males. On a windless day the average male can reach a top flying speed of about 15 miles and hour where as the average female can reach a top flying speed of about 22 miles an hour. However despite all these advantages Avens do have several disadvantages as well. All avens have no sense of smell and their hearing is only about 75% as good as your average humans. Also because of their feet the all avens have and very slow walking speed and it is almost impossible for them to run.

Culture: The aven culture is a warrior based male dominated culture. They are a hunter-gatherer society meaning they often travel about the region as need be to collect fruits and hunt animals for food, clothing and a variety of other things. Though Xanbar Varog is considered the chief of all avens, there are many smaller chiefs to govern various individual aven tribes. Avens are a very war based and often-territorial creatures. Most feel inwardly hostile towards outside races and they don’t welcome visitors. Males are the dominant gender meaning the majority of all major decisions are males and males have the most say and post power in aven societies. Women raise children (including protecting the eggs), gather berries and things of that nature, in general they serve as mates and servants. However women aren’t complete slaves and the aven culture has allowed them to join the militia even though the females aren’t forced to like the males are. In the military females often serve as spies and scouts, since their quick and nimble nature makes them more suited for such positions than the males. The males on the other hand serve as infantry and other such frontline positions. Due to their excellent eyesight the aven’s are great archers as well as javelin throwers. When it comes to none ranged fights, avens prefer weapons with a long reach as it allows them to fight more effeciantly in the air and allows them to avoid fighting a standing fight where they are at a serious disadvantage. It is because of this that pole arms made by avens are some of the best around. Everything from tridents to spears to halberds to lances to javelins are of the highest quality craftsmanship and are light, durable and usually easy to throw accurately when made by an aven weapon smith. Avens are often naturally attuned with the wind and capable of harnessing wind magic a bit easier than other races. Avens that decide to focus on this and increase their powers over the wind make deadly mages and there are legends and tales of avens who could summon hurricanes and tornados with 1000+ mile per hour winds. In battle avens rarely wear armor preferring the natural light protection of their thick feathers. When they do however it is rarely more than a light leather vest or something along that nature.

The Wood Elves
General physical description: Wood elves are brown skinned limber creatures. With males typically only reaching heights between 5’9” and 6’3” and females typically only reaching heights between 5’9” and 6’6” the wood elves tend to be a small breed. Almost every wood elf is light and nimble enabling them scurry along the tree branches and through the brush to find food. The hair and eyes of the wood elves are typically dark. The ears like all elves the ears of the wood elves are pointed though they aren’t as long as those of most other breeds of elves.
Society type: Female dominated hunter-gatherer society though many wood elf tribes have resorted to farming, leading to a smaller number of nomadic hunting wood elf tribes.
Physical attributes: Wood elves are extremely acrobatic, there leg and arm muscles are very flexible yet powerful enough to allow the wood elves to jump large distances between branches and enable them to climb the large trees with relative ease. This is enhanced by the fact that the skin on the hands and feet of the wood elves in naturally very rough enabling them to get a better grip on the tree bark, thus allowing them to climb and balance easier. The wood elves have excellent eyesight, about 1.5 times that of a human’s and that can see in the dark almost as well as the avens.

Culture: Unlike in the aven society females in the wood elf society are respected and revered for their wisdom and the ability to give birth. A woman’s word holds a lot of weight in society and many aspects the wood elf society are shaped by women. Like the avens, the wood elves have one overall ruler (Chief Derma Marivel) and many smaller rulers and chiefs that govern the various individual tribes. The vast majority of wood elf tribes are hunter-gatherer tribes, though with the recent interference of people from the other more developed nations have learned to farm various plants leading to a slight reduction in the number of nomadic wood elf tribes. Concerning travelers from other nations the wood elves are much friendlier and open to trade than the avens. While some individual tribes may feel a degree of hostility towards outsiders most tribes are willing accept outsiders and interact in peace with them. The wood elves are slightly more advanced than their aven brethren and now how to use simple traps as well as bait tactics both for hunting and in military battle. Military life is important to the wood elves though not as much emphasis is put on it as in the aven society. Wood elfin males are forced to train at a young age incase of a large war where as many soldiers as can be are needed but should they decide they don’t like the military life they are not forced to join. Regarding weaponry because of their size and nimble nature wood elves tend to prefer smaller weapons. Many are excellent marksmen with short bows or small throwing weapons such as tomahawks. When it comes to melee fighting the wood elves rely on weapons such as small clubs, short swords or hand axes. In battle the wood elves wear armor made of wood that’s usually treated with special herbs so it doesn’t rot. The wooden armor of the elves is often very durable, well crafted and lightweight. It is because of this that travelers and adventurers have been known to seek wood elfin armor smiths. The wood elves never wear boots or any kind of shoes, nor do they ever wear anything that covers their hands. All wood elves seem to have a natural affinity towards the earth and its creatures. Many wood elves can harness basic earth magic while more powerful wood elf mages are capable of devastating and power earth magic. Most wood elves can communicate with the earth in some way, this usually manifests itself in the ability to have very basic verbal communication with the plants and animals.

Bestiary
The great region of Arrazak contains many exotic, wonderful and dangerous plants and animals. Listed below are some of the more interesting ones that have been discovered and documented by explorers from more advanced nations (avens and wood elves of Arrazak never document anything).


Plants

Arrazak Ice Rose: This plant is easily identifiable by its large icy blue petals and the black thorns that grow on its stalk. The petals of this thing are large, reaching about 6 inches and width and 3 in length. The most distinguishing feature about this plant is that it absorbs heat from all around it, and standing near it will make somebody feel extremely cold. It because of this property the scientists and alchemists enjoy experimenting with it. The Rose is rare, usually found at the top of the canopy where it can absorb copious amounts of sunlight with out being hindered by the massive trees that make up the jungle.

Reaper’s Plume: A round yellow plant with no stalk the Reaper’s Plume earns its name well. Commonly found on dead or dying carcasses the Reaper’s Plume can be deadly. When on of the plums dies it ruptures and shoots out several microscopic spores that are carried by the wind. The spores grow in dead tissue of plants and animals. As the plant grows its roots excrete a toxin that instantly kills living tissue around the area of dead tissue, thus giving the plant more room to grow. A full grown plume will typically be 5-6 inches in diameter and have roots about two inches long. The if a spore starts to grow on a living creature it can be cured very easily by burning it off much like one would get rid of a tic. Needless to say if somebody is unlucky enough to contract several spores or allows the plant(s) to grow it can become deadly and even fatal as the case may be. Scientists often like to harvest the cell-killing toxin as it not only makes an excellent poison but it can be used to create a variety of medicines.

Kuamaga River Lily: A bright red lily that grows in the rivers of the Arrazak. The lilly is small on the outside, its stalk is only about 2.5 inches long at the most and its petals are about as big as the average persons fingernail. The lily absorbs any toxins it catches in the water and stores them in pods that grow from his long roots. River lilies are fairly common thought they can be hard to collect due to the near freezing temps and fast currents of most rivers. Because the lily stores toxins but is often affected by those toxins as well a good way to check the quality of the river water is by observing the lilies growing in the area. Some adventurers and scientist have even managed to dig up the lilies with out damaging the roots and thus were able to dissect the plant and observe the toxins it had captured in its pods.

Mangeka Tree: One of the rarest and most valuable plants in the jungle, the mangeka trees actually absorb magical energy. When magic is cast it leaves behind magical energies or residue. The mangeka trees capture, store and use this magic to produce energy for themselves. It is as of yet unknown how long these trees can store the energy or how long they can store it for. Naturally these trees have a wide variety of uses due to the magical energies they store and their affinity for magic. Chewing the gum of the tree will actually provide the chewer a slight increase in magical power. The wood elves actively seek out these trees to use the bark as armor since it provides nearly unparalleled protection again magic. Items made from the wood of this tree are much easier to enchant due to the affinity for magic. In some extremely rare cases parts of ancient trees that had absorbed an enormous amount of magical energies had natural minor enchantments. Unfortunately these trees do not look any different than any of the other hundreds of thousands of trees in the jungle so finding them is extremely hard. The wood elves use special earth magic that allows them to sense magical energy in the Jungle to find these trees. These trees and their gifts are considered sacred to the wood elves so they will never aid anybody other than a wood elf in finding these elusive trees.

Animals

Jungle Imp: Deadly nocturnal predators, these creatures are a pain to any traveler. These creatures are small, generally not exceeding two feet tall and never more than 60 pounds. However their sharp teeth and leathery hide can make them dangerous. Jungle imps generally live inside up in the lower branches of the trees and they are incredibly aggressive and very territorial. They often travel and live together in packs of about 5 or 6. The skin of these imps is dark brown and has leaves and most growing on it to help the imps blend in with the trees. The avens like to hunt these creatures because their hide makes excellent leather (slightly stronger than tanned cowhide leather) and the meat of these creatures is considered a delicacy to the avens.

Trechonaga Spider: Usually living in burrows underground or under the leaves of ferns that grow low to the ground these spiders are both deadly and helpful at the same time. Trechonaga spiders are about as big as full-grown man’s thumb and have exceptionally short legs. The bite of these spiders is deadly, causing intense fever, nausea, and sever muscle pain in a matter of seconds after the bite. After about 12-14 hours in addition to these symptoms victims of the bite will start to experience blurred eyesight, weakened hearing and partial numbness. After about 24 hours the victim usually dies if the victim is not treated. What makes these spiders helpful is the fact that their web secrets a special gas. This gas serves to attract bugs and insects, which the spiders feed on but it has been discovered that the gas actually aids plant growth, helping the plants, grow faster and better. Because of the gasses effects on plants many farmers often collect several of theses spider and release them on their farms.

Scaratoga River Shark: These sharks are the kings of the water in Arrazak. Each when full grown each shark is about 6 feet long. The Scaratoga sharks have sandy colored skin and like to sleep on the bottoms of riverbeds. Each shark has three rows of about 10 teeth on both the bottom and top of their mouth. The outer row on the top and bottom are each hooked so that whatever prey the shark bites into has a hard time escaping. Near the tips of each shark’s head are several small dots the size of the tip of a pin. These dots are actually specialized glands that allow the shark to fire off small amounts of electricity. This electricity is enough to kill most small fish though if it hits that person will merely feel numbness for a few seconds in whatever body part they got hit. The sharks are omnivores eating basically whatever they can find in the water, anything from fruits to live animals are food for these sharks. Because of specialized fins and gills these sharks can swim comfortably in water as shallow as 2 feet deep. The eyesight of these sharks is poor but their sense of smell is unrivaled and they are literally capable of smelling blood from a mile away.

Zulma Monkey: Named after the goddess Zulma, these rare monkeys get their name because of their strange ability to change their shape into virtually any plant or rock in existence. They also seem to have some degree of plant manipulation as there have been documented observations of the monkeys manipulating and making things such as vines and tree branches move without ever physically touching them. The zulma monkeys are herbivores, mainly eating things such as fruit and various plants. It they have also been seen eating dirt and rocks for nutrients. These monkeys are about 2 feet tall and their fur is the color of clay. They are cowardly creatures, running and hiding (usually by changing shape) at even the slightest hint of danger. Zulma monkey tend to live together in small bands of 3-4 and are constantly roaming in fruit.

Yamituro snake: The yamituro snakes are the largest recorded snakes on Althanas, reaching up to 40 feet in length and weighing as much as 300 plus pounds these are dangerous pythons. Like all pythons these snakes have no venom instead they prefer to coil themselves around their prey and crush it to death before swallowing it whole. The strength of these pythons is incredible, easily capable of crushing human bone to splinters and dust. The pythons hate the heat and are usually found near extremely moist areas such as creeks or riverbeds as well as in shady areas such as fallen trees. As is the case with most reptiles, these pythons have a slow metabolism and a single meal (which is usually a large creature such as a deer or something) will usually take several days to digest. Needless to say these pythons are carnivores. The scales of a by thon are a brown and dark green pattern, to allow the snake to blend in with the ground and plants in crawls through. The scales of this snake are extremely valuable.

Important NPCs

Chief Derma Marivel One of Arrazak’s two monarchs and the leader of all the wood elves.
Race: Wood elf
Gender: Female
Age: 35
Appearance: Chief Derma Marivel is what many would consider attractive. She is about 6’2” and has a skinny build. Having served in the military before becoming a chief, Derma’s body is firm and well muscled though none of her muscles are particularly large or well defined. She has bright green eyes and her jet black hair goes down to about her hips. Though she has been seen dawning a wide variety of extravagant and elegantly made cloths for numerous occasions, she normally wears her wooden armor (see equipment).
Personality: Stern, disciplined and militaristic are all accurate words to Derma’s personality. When it comes to her job Marivel is no nonsense and takes every decision very seriously. She is forward thinking and likes how explorers from other nations are bringing in new ideas and technologies to the nation. She is happy to support trades between her nation and others and encourages her people to try some of the new ideas such as farming. She is still loyal to her people and willing to do anything to protect them. Marivel is a bit feminist believing females to be superior to males over all.
Equipment: For armor Marivel wears a single wooden chest plate and a wooden skirt both made from the wood of mangeka trees. The armor is equivalent to liviol in strength and extremely resistant to magic. Sheathed at her left side are 5 steel throwing knives and sheathed at her right side is a silver short sword that was given to her as a gift from John Termina.

Chief Xanbar Varog One of Arrazak’s two monarchs and the leader of all the avens.
Race: Aven
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Appearance: Large and powerful, Xanbar is an intimidating figure. This former aven war chief stands at a little over 7’0” and has a large shoulder width and wing span. His eyes are a piercing blue. Aside from a few ceremonial dresses that he wears on Aven holidays, Chief Xanbar is almost always seen in his wardress (see equipment).
Personality: Like Derma, Xanbar is a no nonsense type guy with a stern and disciplined personality. He is much more traditional thinking than Marivel as avens tend to be. He doesn’t like all of the sudden exploration from outsiders and fears that their new technologies and weird customs will start to interfere with the aven ways of life. To him outsiders are unwelcome to Arrazak and Xanbar believes the nation is better off without interacting with other nations. Xanbar is a bit racist, believing that avens are superior to every race and that Arrazak is superior to every nation. The aven chief is also a misogynistic, believing females to be inferior to males.
Equipment: Xanbar wears a vest with no back made of imp leather (slightly stronger and more durable than cow leather) that is decorated with numerous paintings and designs. Around his neck is a necklace made from shark teeth and around his waist is a snakeskin belt that has the skulls of slain enemy commanders from it (currently there are 13 skulls). This is all part of his wardress. Xanbar’s one weapon is a large steel halberd about 6 feet in length with a 1-inch spike on each end. Xanbar never cleans this weapon except for the edge to the blade and the tip of the spike, meaning it is caked in blood, bacteria, and mold giving all wounds inflicted by the weapon a nearly 100% chance of becoming infected.

Jonathan “John” Termina The founder of Termina Trading Post.
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 68
Appearance: John Termina is a frail old man. John stands at a height of about 5’11” His gray hair is mostly gone and his once beautiful brown eyes have since lost their luster. His skin is old and wrinkled and his once well tone muscles are now soft and saggy and he now has a decent sized gut. He can usually be found wearing numerous expensive suits when he’s doing business though normally he just wears an old sleeveless wool shirt and a pair of faded canvas jeans.
Personality: John’s body may have succumbed to old age but his mind seems to still be good. John is an excellent businessman, capable of spotting a good deal from a rotten one with ease and almost always making good business choices. Other than that he is quite friendly and enjoys company. Unlike so many other humans he does not see avens or wood elves as primitives but rather as valuable business partners and he sees the island of Azzarak as a great long-term investment instead of some primitive wasteland like other humans.
Equipment: None other than his cloths.

Timothy “Tim” Termina The son of Jonathan Termina and owner of Termina Trading Post.

Appearance: Timothy Termina is a handsome lad. Tim stands at about 6’1” and his skin is tanned and his muscles are well toned and well defined. Tim’s skin is a bit rough as a result from spending countless hours working at the docks of the trading post out in the scorching sun. His hair is kept short, only going just below his ears in the back of his head. Like his father he usually wears a sleeveless cotton shirt and a pair of old canvas pants when he’s out working in the docks or relaxing. When he’s working in his office or conducting business deals he usually wears a variety of expensive suits.
Personality: Like his father, John has a sharp mind and a savvy business sense. His father taught him everything he knows about business and how to manipulate your clients so that you get the best deal possible. John is a smooth talker and knows how to get people to listen to what he says. He is very friendly and holds no racism against the wood elves or the aven. Unfortunately lack of experience around girls means non-business meetings with them are often uncomfortable and awkward for him.
Equipment: Johns one piece of weaponry is his double-edged adamantine long sword. It is an excellently crafted long sword that was given to him by his father (it was formally his fathers sword) and is his most prized possession, aside from the Termina Trading Post of course.
