It's got a working petition from OpenMedia. As far as I know, they've gotten involved in some Canadian issues like this to some effect... as much as they can have against the big wallets.

Anyways, this is getting annoying. How many of these companies actually CARE about people using their copyrighted material?

In my understanding, copyrights are normally to PREVENT THE COPYING AND SALE of the specific thing, like you can't call your store Walmart, etc. But now we're going for "internet related infringements." Bullshit I say...

This is a bit dated, but I think you're focusing on the wrong part of the TPP. The TPP is designed to work like NAFTA, where special visas are created to enable the freedom of movement across borders for business purposes. In addition, the agreement will keep tarriffs low, offering a competitive advantage over China for goods manufactured.

You also misunderstand the IP portion of the TPP. Trade agreements such as these open countries (and their people or companies) up to legal responsibilities they might not have had before. In this particular instance, the U.S. has comparatively stringent copyright protection compared to the TTP countries (except Canada). ISPs can still be civilly liable in the U.S. under the DCMA if they've been notified about illegal content, have the means to remove the material, and have not removed the material. The U.S. is trying to extrajudicate their laws onto these other countries, which host a great deal of piracy. If they are subject to these laws, U.S. companies (or people) who produce these copyrighted materials can have their stuff removed from pirate websites or sue them. Unlike before, they'll actually have a good chance of winning the suit.

The U.S. negotiation strategy is simple. Stick it hard initially then back down to the level they actually want. Also Ghost, think back to civics class. This is a non self-executing agreement, which means that any action taken that usurps power from Congress would acquire approval from Congress as a full treaty. SOPA did not make it through Congress once. Do you really think it has a chance to make it through again?

I did my own research into this subject because the initial link was full of inflammatory language - it's designed to incite outrage and panic among people who don't/won't do their research and are easily panicked. Dirk's explanation is pretty much right - I didn't find anything in the language of the TPP itself that would actually shut down much of anything, and Fair Use is explicitly protected.
