    The Gooey Kablooey

The kitchen in the House of Cards, the vast bright one that Vince liked to use in his spare time, was graced by an unusual sight today. Strong white lamps illuminated the bug-eyed boy who was tearing through the room, and the black direwolf who stared critically out from her comfortable recline under the center table. The door was closed, reserving the room for Fenn’s use today. Pots, pans, strainers, and various other utensils used for cooking were thrown about the room in methodical disarray. The ones deemed necessary by Fenn were piled on the counter. Those that weren't were discarded on the floor or hastily shoved back into their original places at odd angles. Brownish marks marred the gleaming planks from him dragging a stool back and forth between counters so many times.

The place was a mess, and it was only going to get more chaotic.

Clutched in Fenn’s hands as he busied himself around was a book. A cooking book, to be precise. He laid it open on the implement-strewn counter and flipped through it with an electric grin. It was a book with a very smooth blue cover, and some elaborate inked images of different dishes. He had trouble describing the way the pages felt. They were... waxy... to the touch? Perhaps that wasn't the word. If Fenn knew what plastic was, he might have described the laminated pages as that exactly.

Within the last few weeks, since the incident where he had encountered Amari again, Fenn had settled into the House of Cards. And to “settle down”, of course, entailed picking an unoccupied room and using it as a storage space for some of the extra keepsakes in his hefty bag. His shoulders thanked him for it. These past few days had been a flurry of exploration for him; poking his head into other’s rooms, tromping up and down the floors with Daugi, and generally making a nuisance of himself on the property. It was his typical way of introducing himself to a place, much like one might get to know a co-worker they would spend long hours with in the future. This morning, Fenn had popped into a library in a quick spell of curiosity and had ended up walking out with a cookbook.

It had never been difficult to get Fenn off-task. Throw a shiny object his way, and he’d drop whatever he was doing to chase after it.

This book, evidently, was an acceptably shiny object, enough to distract him for the rest of the day. Not much so literally -- disappointingly! -- but metaphorically. He had found a recipe that had intrigued him, and thus he had it in his mind to try his hand at cooking it.

He was going to make some Earth lasagna. Wouldn’t Vince be proud?

Fenn peered at the cute little pasta-dish-thing inked onto the open page of his borrowed book, and his stomach, the loudest part of him, growled in grumpy complaint. Nothing has passed his lips since breakfast. He had better get to work!

Cooking was not one of Fenn’s strengths, and he would admit this readily. However, he knew that when there was an opportunity to try something he hadn't taken a crack at before, he couldn't turn it down.

He had mixed up rudimentary medicines from wild herbs and flowers with a fair amount of ease in the past. Making a dish of food was pretty much the same thing, except with a little fire involved. He could handle it so long as he didn't freeze anything. Fenn pulled some purple oven mitts out of a drawer and slipped them over his hands. They were too big, but he could deal with that. Rather than protecting him from heat, he was hoping to protect the ingredients from his cold. Daugi gave a tickled chuffle as her little friend slipped them on. They were ridiculous enough on their own, a reflection of Vincent’s taste, and they were hilariously oversized on the tiny boy.

Fenn stroked his chin in thought. He had the tools now. What was next? Right! Reread the instructions, assemble the ingredients. While he couldn't make head nor tails of the units, he knew he needed some meat, some cheese, some pasta, some sauce, and a pan to cook it in. Maybe add some spices too -- was mustard acceptable? The instructions were pretty specific, but Fenn figured that he could remove and change steps as needed along the way. He had seen Vince whip of delicious meals quite a few times now. All he really had to do was mix stuff together, put it together in the pan, and throw it in the oven for forty-five minutes.

    How hard could it be?

Daugi stretched and yawned, displaying her slobbery pink tongue to the world before flopping down in a sleepy heap at the base of the warming oven. Her left eye was cracked open a pinch, watching her small buddy as he zipped back and forth, gathering ingredients and heaping them upon the countertop. Some help you are! You’ll be more interested in this when I bring out the meat, Fenn sniffed indignantly as he drew thick chunks of pale cheese from the back of the icebox and poured mustard into a bowl -- he was going to mix that with the sauce.

As he fetched foodstuff, Fenn’s mind meandered around in circles. The last time he had been cooking here, he had been with Vince and Amari. Come to think of it, where was Amari these days? Certainly not in the Osiris house. He hadn't seen hide nor hair of her since he had returned from Nippariess’ lair.

It made him wince a little. He promised he'd stay with her, but he didn't know how to spend time with someone who was vanished.

Fenn poured lasagna noodles in the bottom of his chosen pan in crooked rows, frowning. Maybe Vince had already assigned her to a Raeiara-cleansing mission-thing. When he showed Vincent the lasagna, Fenn would have to ask him about that. He glanced over his shoulder at the windows, taking note of the sun’s position. Hopefully, his Earthman friend would be here after Fenn had finished his concoction.

He’ll be surprised! With an excited little skip, Fenn snatched up a jar of tomato sauce. Time to mix it with the mustard. He twisted the top of the jar with his gloves.

They sliiiiiid over the ridged surface, unable to attain a proper grip. Fuck. It was stuck.

Really! I can’t be that weak.

For longer than he’d care to admit, Fenn wrestled and struggled with the top of the jar. His hands hurt a bit from all his straining. No matter what, the lid just wouldn’t pop open. So much for his strength. Fenn gave the container a thin glare, heartily considering smashing it against the table and using whatever didn’t end up all over the place. He looked to his gloves a moment. Maybe it would be less slippery without them? There was his rogue magic, but… I'm not getting anywhere as is. Might as well try it! He removed the mitts and took the stubborn lid into his own hands.

Frost lightly speckled the surface as he attempted to twist and turn the top. It wasn’t much more successful than with the gloves. The ridges on the lid chafed his fingers and reddened his hands. This jar was one of those weird Earth-things Vincent pulled out of mid-air. Why were Earth things so weird? Frustration radiated from out from Fenn as he scrabbled with the jar in teeth-clenched struggle.

    Come on, comeon, c’mon..!

Fssshk. A slick coating of ice suddenly shot down the side of the jar. Inside, the tomato glop stiffened and expanded, freezing inside and out. The sudden pressure within caused the whole thing to pop open like a balloon. As the lid whooshed past his face and over his head, the now-useless jar of tomato ice dropped from Fenn’s hands onto the table. Daugi yipped and jolted to her feet as the lid ricocheted off her face and bounced onto the floor. She gave a hearty growl down at the offending piece of plastic. It was smacked indignantly away with one swipe of her paws.

A hand to his forehead, Fenn glumly watched as it slid past his feet, coming to a rest on the other side of the room. He closed his eyes and sighed.

Right. And that's why I needed gloves.

There was one or two more jars in the pantry, he was sure of it, but the boy suspected that the results would be similar if he tried them. What could replace tomato sauce? He stared hard at the bowl of mustard and tapped his foot on the floor. The tapping turned into thoughtful pacing, which screeched to a sudden halt as he glanced back at the mustard. Mustard reminded him of... Fenn bounced up with a sudden beam, and bolted towards the cabinets, dragging his stool behind him. There was a tubby bottle of ketchup sitting invitingly on one of the lower shelves. Why couldn’t he just use that? After all, it was red, and it was (probably) made of tomatoes, right? It tasted like tomato anyway. That’d be a close enough substitution!

Now that things were on track, Fenn could put his gloves back on and get straight to work. The lasagna noodles in the pan were layered over with a sauce mix that was comprised of several bottles of ketchup, some diced mushrooms that seemed just fresh enough to use, and several bottles of mustard. It was followed by a mysterious meat he had salvaged from the deeper part of the icebox. A few sniffs made him wonder if it was venison; it seemed pretty gamey. Slipping a chunk down to his canine friend had her confirm that it was delicious. Knew you would like this part.

Next, he crumbled a mess of mozzarella over it all. Fenn scrutinized the pizza, tapping his chin thoughtfully. Was that enough cheese? Nope! Was there ever enough cheese? He layered on a few more liberal helpings, popping a chunk into his mouth and sneakily dropping a few bits on the floor. Daugi scooted a few paces forwards and licked it up with one slobbery gulp, tail wagging.

The dish was probably half cheese at that point. This, Fenn decided with a nod of approval, is sufficient.

A glance back at the cookbook was had. Noodles, sauce, meat, cheese. The boy grabbed the pan and carried it over to the oven for the last step. Excitedly, he shoved it in and set it to the specified temperature. All that was left to do was wait!

    And wait.

    And wait.

Daugi weathered the waiting period very well, napping on the floor as she was. Fenn, however, did not. Patience was not one of his virtues. Tap, tap, tap went his bare feet on the sauce-spattered floor. Sure, Fenn had cognitively understood the amount of time the recipe said it would take to cook -- forty-five minutes was forty-five minutes -- but he hadn’t really thought about how long waiting for it to cook would feel. A glance at the clock; only three minutes had passed. He wanted to eat his ooey gooey concoction now.

An odd thought came to him as he sat in annoyance and stared into the oven, and a slow smile spread from ear to pointed ear. He managed to replace the tomato sauce with ketchup, hadn’t he? Why couldn’t he replace the time it took to cook fully with something else -- say, an incendiary element?

Some of the tinkerers in this House kept gunpowder around.

The boy snuck out the door of the kitchen and closed it tightly behind him, surveying the quiet halls ahead. It was relatively peaceful at this time. Most everyone was out right now, for one reason or another. He rubbed his hands together, a sly grin on his face as he started off on his adventure.

Fenn’s first thought had been to creep into either that blonde’s or Rayleigh’s tinker-y rooms and search for some of the perfect black powder. He’d thought better of it after a moment of thinking; he didn’t know for certain if or where they kept it, and he found himself more than a little intimidated by the women. If caught, he didn’t know either of them well enough to come up with a reasonable excuse as to why, exactly, he had been rifling through their things.

That left one other person who was nearly certain have a supply of the stuff; John. His forge would be an excellent place to snoop around. And if caught, the big man would probably forgive his little buddy for taking a pinch of something he needed. John was really nice that way-

Oh! Footsteps! Fenn stopped short, his ears swiveling in the direction of the sound. The Fae panicked a bit. He momentarily forgot that his presence in the House hallways was pretty ordinary now, so caught up in his silly powder-snatching plan. Fenn was feeling too sneaky to not try to hide himself a bit. He fluttered his hands in front of him, tracing magic into the air through his fingertips. By the time the other person rounded the corner, a new guise covered Fenn head-to-toe like a shroud. No longer did he appear a small child; now, he was a giant! Or, a half-giant, really. He had transformed into the first person he had thought of, the bearded behemoth that was John.

Luckily, it wasn’t John himself to turned the corner only to come face-to-face with a nearly perfect replica of himself. Instead, it was merely the lady mechanic that Vince spoke so highly of. Ray passed him by with a nod of acknowledgement that bobbed her red curls and a clockwork wave as she edged around the bulky form of the illusion. “Oh, good afternoon, John.”

“John” nodded in stiff stoicism, unable to give a worded response. Trying not to do anything to give himself away, Fenn held his breath, waiting for her to pass. Nothing to see here! Move along! As soon as she was out of sight, Fenn heaved a breath of relief and let go of the draining Glamour. It crumbled apart into flakes of snow that melted into nothing as soon as they touched the carpet. Wow! He shivered with leftover thrill.

It made him wonder. How much could he get away with if he looked like Vincent?

That was a question for another day though. Having soundly avoided the danger (that hadn’t really existed in the first place), the boy scampered on his way to the forge.

    (Thanks Ray! <3)

John’s forge was a boxy sort of room with a sort of gated-lava-fed boxy structure at one end. Fenn did not know the technical names for these things, but he understood that they made metal melty and John made the melty metal into stuff. The boy had poked his head in from time to time to watch bits and pieces of the process. John wasn't making anything right now though, or at least not here. Maybe he was making stuff at his home forge. Or out adventuring. Or enjoying the company of his ladyfriend.

Point was, the forge was all Fenn’s at the moment.

The other side of the room was where the tools and metal-to-be-made-malty was stored. Fenn bounced on over, the frost his feet made quickly dewdropping behind him in the warm room. There was a large workbench, and fixed above it were similarly large shelves with various bits of metal and the like on it.

Scaling the shelves wasn't too difficult for Fenn. Climbing things to sate his curiosity was a common occurrence for him. He hung off the first one and carefully sorted through the items. Metals, tools, powders… nope, no gunpowder. Up to the next shelf, and then the next. His arms were tired from clinging to the grainy wood.

Finally, the topmost shelf delivered. There was a beige clay pot sitting near the edge, and peering inside greeted Fenn with a soft black powder. He dabbed a finger in it and tasted it. It was sharp and peppery, strongly metallic in nature. Fenn quickly spat and rubbed it off his tongue. Yep, that was the right stuff! Surely, John wouldn't mind him picking up a pinch.

With a scoop of his final ingredient in hand, Fenn shimmied down the shelves and bobbed back towards the kitchen.

Daugi greeted Fenn with a gentle “Wuff!” and a wagging tail as he rushed into the kitchen and over towards the oven.

His visit to the forge had eaten up quite a chunk of time by itself. He peered into the oven, checking on his dish. The lasagna seemed to be nearly cooked by now. However, it wasn’t fully done yet. That meant his trip hadn’t been in vain! Might as well save the ten-minute wait and finish this cooking now! A sprinkle of the glittery black powder was tossed into the oven. Not much, just a pinch. A satisfied sigh squeezed out of the small Fae as he dusted off his hands and meandered his way over to the sink, intending to get some steamy hot water running in order to wash his hands of the remaining powder speckles.

He wondered how much faster his culinary concoction would bake. One minute? Two?

Daugi sniffed the air with suspicion and scooted away from the oven to hide behind a chair.

    ...five seconds?

    Ka-BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

The oven burst open with a boggling bang. Dubious chunks of Fenn’s lasagna sprayed around in a blast of singed, gooey chunks. The boy threw his arms over his face, thought it didn't do him much good. He was blown back by the explosion of guck, plastered to the wall square across the room under the force of the gooey guck. The thick chunks of muck were hot enough to give him what was mildly comparable to a sunburn before it froze him to the wall. Ow.

Fenn stared at the oven, shocked by this betrayal. His surprise lasagna was no more!

The door cracked open. “Fenn?” Vincent’s head swiveled around the corner, taking on the careless destruction that was now his kitchen. His eyes were as wide as saucers. “What happened here?”

All the little Fae could do was give a sheepish shrug and peel himself off the wall, causing the frozen no-longer-lasagna to crunch in complain.

    Whoops!

Fenn plodded sheepishly through the library of the House of Cards, holding in hand a book that he had every intention of returning and never picking up again. His skin was blotched with embarrassed pink burns, which only served to highlight his frost "freckles", and he touched them with stinging shyness, as if he weren't quite sure that they were still there. There was quite a lot of messy he was going to be responsible for cleaning up. Probably, with lots of supervision.

After the gooey kablooey they had happened in the kitchen, the little Fae understood that he probably needed guidance in any future kitchen ventures. It had been a good learning experience though. Mustard did not belong in lasagna. Gunpowder made ovens explode.

And cooking, he knew now, required a very close following of the instructions.

And now, he figured he should probably return the cookbook. Otherwise he knew it would sit in his room unused for far too long. Surely, Fenn pondered as ran his hoar-bitten hands along the worn spines of the “C” books, something that was borrowed rather than stolen ought to be returned at some point. Ah, there it was. There was the bookcase he took it from in the first place.

That the shelf he had gotten the book from was taller than him was something he had forgotten. As he stood on tip-toe and slid the bright plasticine book in with its leatherbound breathren, he bumped the shelf above. A loose red tome wobbled and slid off the higher shelf, bonking Fenn right in the noggin and sending starts streaking across his sight. Ow!

Fenn grumpily clutched his forehead where the book had hit him -- he was going to have a bruise now, wasn't he? -- and looked down at the injuring tome. Well, that didn't belong there! This was no “C” book. This was clearly an “F”. The boy huffed and bent down to peer at the cover.

Fae Beings and the Natural World. By one Darcy Clemont.

Huh. Actually, maybe Fenn had gotten his book from the wrong place; perhaps everything was organized by author instead of title.

The subject matter was curious though, to say the least.

Slowly, Fenn picked up the book and opened it to a page in the middle. This was a fortuitous coincidence. He wanted -- no, he needed a book to tell him a little about his own kind. This had been a gaping hole in the treasure of trove of knowledge stashed between his ears for the longest time, and recent events had shoved his face into the empty space and rubbed his nose in the dust.

Stupid ice dragon, with her stupid knows-more-about-me-than-I-do attitude, and her stupid I-could-eat-you-whole meanness.

Fenn would love it if there was something could give him some clue as to the mannerisms of the typical Frost Fae, or their biology, or their magic. Uncertainty worried at his eyebrows. Especially their magic. The boy pulled his hands away from the shelf a moment to ponder the speckles of ice that freckled him like a smattering of stars. His recent nightmares were visited by more than just Amari, Raster, or the more… eldritch… beings he had encountered on his travels. There were nights when he woke up in a freezing sweat, the image of a dead merchant burned behind his eyelids and an illusory icicle clutched betwixt his fingers.

A shudder trickled its way down Fenn’s spine as he turned his attention back to the book. “No need to linger on such things,” passed through his mind, becoming as much a personal mantra as his typical chant of “Risk leads to reward”.

It looked like his attempt at cooking had stumbled him into something else entirely.
