    Hello, and welcome to Althanas!

We call the character creation area "The Realm of Greeting". If you've found your way here, you are probably either looking to create a character, or checking up on the rules. This brand new version of the Realm of Greeting guide will help you do both, and has been updated for the changes that will take effect on 1st March 2021.

If you have a question that isn't covered by one of the sections below, please feel free to contact via PM or one of the staff from the following list:

    Required Character Information

The most important part of creating a character here is knowing about your creation!

The only information we require in a profile for it to be approved is:

    1) Your Character's Skills
    2) Your Character's Abilities
    3) Your Character's Equipment

If you're stuck, a glance in the Character Registration Archive will definitely give you some ideas. You'll notice that 99% of users post their profiles in a certain format. For the purposes of adding flavour to your character, we recommend (not instruct) you use the format below, and please feel free to make it as glitzy or customised as you like. You don't have to follow this exact format, but it is here as a guide:

    Name:
    Age:

    Appearance:
    Personality:
    Equipment:
    Skills:
    Abilities:
    Background / History:
When you post a new character, please add a prefix for the thread, "[New]" or "[Update]." When a moderator approves it, they will change the prefix to "[APPROVED]." If the thread is unapproved or you choose to abandon the profile (we usually leave them up for a month), we'll change the prefix to "[UNAPPROVED]" and archive accordingly.

    Skills

Skills are subjective (non-tangible) traits that are based solely on your character's knowledge. These do not have a direct affect on another character in competitive RP.

Common skills may include swordplay or marksmanship. While being a skilled swordsman might allow your character to engage in more advanced posturing and attack patterns, it is the intrinsic character traits (such as strength, agility, speed, and endurance) that are directly affecting the other character.

    Examples of skills may be:

    • Swordsmanship
    • Smithery
    • Survivalism
    • Hunting
    • Theivery
    • Political aptitude

    This list is NOT exhaustive.

SKILLS ARE NOT MODERATED BY THE REALM OF GREETING. This means we'll never say no to a skill, but they still must be listed in your profile.

SKILLS ARE MODERATED BY JUDGES. If you are caught powergaming (playing beyond your character's level or abilities) or bunnying (determining the action of another character without permission (i.e. autoing)) in competitive roleplay, the judge (the member of staff who issues rewards for progression) will reduce your score accordingly. We also don't regulate the adjectives attached to the skill (such as beginner, apprentice, master, etc.), regardless of how unrealistic it might be. You can use any qualifier you want, provided it is not a masked ability.

The reason we don't regulate skills in the Realm of Greeting is because we don't want to limit you into a particular character archetype. If you want to play a grizzled old war veteran from Alerar with advanced combat skills, or play an apprentice baker from Corone, we want you to have the opportunity to do so on Althanas. Both types of characters, while varying widely in terms of history and experience, are more than welcome on the site.

    Abilities

An Ability is considered as anything a PC (Player Character) can do that will have an effect on another PC if they are targeted.

This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Schools of Magic (Elemental Schools like fire and ice, or more specific schools like Healing or Necromancy, schools are a type of magic that can have many varied applications but are rooted in a single type of magic)
    • Passive Stat Increases (Greater than normal strength, speed, etc.)
    • Standalone Powers (Shooting eye lasers or using an ability that temporarily increases your character's stats, these powers usually have a limit on number of uses)
    • Active Use Powers (Telekinesis, Telepathy, Psionics, etc.)

The job of the RoG (Realm of Greeting) team is not to limit what kinds of abilities a player can choose for their character, but instead to check those abilities for balance and prevent them from being used to have an unfair advantage within the world over other PCs. Any powers like that would be considered "insanely strong" and would not be approved.

    Examples of Abilities

These also apply for the mention of 'weaker' and 'stronger' abilities as mentioned at the end of this section.

As an example a "weak" ability may be the following:

"John is able to send one telepathic message at a time to someone he has met before. This can be a range of up to 300 metres, and no more. He can use this ability three times a day."

    -or-

"Jane is able to produce and project fire balls roughly the size of a cantaloupe. These orbs explode on impact, leaving a mild to moderate burn on the target and may set flammable materials on the target on fire. She can use these fire balls up to four times per day."

An "average" ability may look like the following:

"John is able to send telepathic messages to anyone within his vicinity, about a mile. He can send one message at a time, and it has a limitation of one message per post (or half an hour)."

    -or-

"Jane is able to summon fire at will and release it in bursts of up to two meters in length. Anything in the path of the flames will suffer moderate to severe burns. She can use this ability up to ten times per day before needing a rest."

A "strong" ability might look like the following:

"John is able to send a message to anyone he likes anywhere across the world. He can only send one message at a time, and once per post. He can send it to a full room of people, up to a collection of 50 people in close proximity to each other."

    -or-

"Jane has the ability to summon fire at will. She can cloak herself entirely in flames or whip tendrils of fire out from her body toward anything within ten meters by merely thinking about it. The fire can even be solidified so that it can cut as well as burn, like a blade of pure flame. The flames do not harm her body and she is capable of using the fire as long as she has the energy to do so. However, should she run out of energy or endurance, she will pass out from the strain."

An "insanely strong" ability might be (please note these are unapprovable as they exceed the limitations mentioned at the start of this section):

"John can speak to anyone telepathically anywhere at any time and no one can keep him from their mind. He could effectively talk to everyone at the same time if he wanted to."

    -or-

"Jane can cause an explosion of titanic proportions to erupt from her body at will, incinerating anything within a one kilometer radius except for those she views as allies. She can do this as many times a day as she wants and does not tire from it."

    Power Gaming

Power Gaming can come in many forms, but generally speaking it is the act of creating an ability or writing a circumstance that gives your character an unfair advantage.

The most important thing to remember about Power Gaming is the following: If what you do takes away the other writers' freedom to control their own characters or your character performs an action they are not able to do within their character sheet (without discussing it with your writing partners beforehand) it is power gaming.

Some examples of Power Gaming include the following:

    • Automatically hitting another character without giving them the chance to defend in their post
    • Instant kills (if your opponent is a Player Character and doesn’t agree to it beforehand)
    • Any ability that is designed specifically to give you an unfair advantage over all other PCs
    • Bunnying (controlling another Player Character without their owner's permission)

Each level has an ability cap, listed below. We can make allowances for characters who choose to have a greater number of weaker abilities in place of fewer stronger ones. Please also note that abilities earned through training and bought through the Ability Shop in the Bazaar do NOT count towards this cap.

    Level 1 - 3 abilities
    Level 2 - 4 abilities
    Level 3 - 5 abilities
    Level 4 - 6 abilities
    Level 5 - 7 abilities
    Level 6 - 8 abilities
    Level 7 - 9 abilities
    Level 8 - 10 abilities
    Level 9 - 11 abilities
    Level 10 - 12 abilities
    Level 11 - 13 abilities
    Level 12 - 14 abilities
    Level 13 - 15 abilities
    Level 14 - 16 abilities
    Level 15 - 17 abilities
    Level 16 - 18 abilities
    Level 17 - 19 abilities
    Level 18 - 20 abilities
    Level 19 - 21 abilities
    Level 20 - 22 abilities

    Equipment

All starting equipment must be tier 1 or less in the Bazaar. These materials include:

    Copper
    Bronze
    Iron
    Real World Woods (like Oak)
    Real World Hide (like Leather)
    Bone
    Calli Glass
Moderated items that are not available to new members include:

    Bullets
    Mtech Cartridges
    Vehicles (Chariots, Ships, Airships)
Common items, even if they could be made into items that would affect another character, are not moderated. This includes ropes, threads, bags, etc. Similarly, common clothing such as cotton, denim and burlap is not moderated. The reason for this is because it is very unlikely your character would have time in a competitive battle to assemble the items in such a way to harm your opponent. To regulate each item individually within the Realm of Greeting would be very time consuming.

    Character Updates

From time to time, you will want to update your profile as you level up or obtain new gear.

In general, the abilities you are approved with are locked until you level up again. There are a few exceptions to this, such as when you gain a new ability from a training thread or through the Bazaar’s Ability Shop. Thus, character updates come in two types – mid level updates, and level updates.

    Mid-Level Updates

As the name suggests, mid-level updates are updates that are posted at anytime. You are allowed to do the following:

    • Add abilities earned through training or bought at the Bazaar’s Ability Shop.
    • Add items, weapons and armour bought from the Bazaar and the Auction House, or earned as spoils from a quest.
    • Change biographical information.

You may not change or add to any abilities that do not fall into the above categories.

    Level Updates

Level updates are updates that are posted after level ups. In a level update, you are allowed to add, remove and change more or less anything you like. As you level up, your level cap will increase, so you might want to use the update to add abilities. Added or strengthened abilities are quickly checked by staff and then approved if there is nothing concerning.

We typically do not allow complete character overhauls on Althanas, but we do have a re-incarnation feature that allows members to kill their current character and keep half of their current EXP to create a new one.

    Character Reincarnation

Eventually, someone might grow tired of a character or its build. Recognizing that literary pursuits often change, Althanas allows them a method of creating a new character without having to start level progression over. We call this process reincarnation. Character reincarnation is different from character retirement.

The process for reincarnation is simple. All you need to do is post a new character profile and mention it is a reincarnation of an existing character.

When you reincarnate, the new character will start with 50% of the EXP of the previous character. GP is transferred in full. Keep in mind, though, that when they reincarnate, the old character becomes unapproved and it can no longer be played in the moderated RP sections of the forum.

Here are a few quick reminders regarding reincarnation:

    1) Reincarnated characters receive 50% of the EXP of the old character.

    2) GP is transferred in full.

    3) Reincarnation is permanent! You cannot change their mind after the new character has been approved without reincarnating again (and therefore losing 50% more EXP).

    4) There is no limit to the number of times you can reincarnate a character; however, your EXP will be halved each time you do it.

    5) Old versions of characters can still be referenced as NPCs, but they cannot be the focal point of stories in moderated RP and it cannot be used in competitive RP.

    6) Character updates that make significant changes to a character might be deemed reincarnations. This determination is made at the discretion of the moderator with confirmation by administration.

    Approval Process

    1) Post a thread with either 'new' or 'updated' prefixes, depending on whether you are a new character or doing a mid-level or full level update. The post should contain, at least, the information under the "Required Character Information" section.

    2) A member of staff will then have a quick look through the profile. There are only three checks we need to do on each character:

    • Ensure that all equipment and abilities are within their correct tiers for that level
    • Check the abilities for obvious powergaming or game-breaking mechanics
    • Check for obvious plagurism.
Once we are happy that everything is in line with our rules, you will be approved! We then add 200 starting GP to your account ), and archive the thread in the approved characters section.

The most important thing to do after being approved?

    3) Go and have fun! Write with as many people as possible, post on the forums, get involved in the community and earn as much EXP and GP as you can get your hands on!
