    Fenn Goes Purse Shopping

The lightness at Fenn’s side was… unnerving.

The darkened corners of Radasanth’s black market sprawled and twisted before the boy. The gloom of the brick corridors and mossy, crumbling walls suited the small Fae just fine. Clutching his baggy, newly-emptied bag to his chest, Fenn skittered across the streets with anxious, sure-footed purpose. A couple ruffians leered at him from a splintered doorway; the boy returned their intimidating stares with a sharp snap of his teeth and scampered on his way. He kind of wished he’d thought to bring along Daugi. Nothing discouraged shady folk quite like the baying of a blood-eyed direwolf.

Yes, the lightness of his bag was really, really bothering Fenn. It was best if he concluded this business quickly.

Normally, he came here to sell things. Today all he brought was a pouchful of gleaming coin and his bag. His sad, hollow, empty bag. Earlier, he had stashed his valuables -- his memory-laden trinkets, his whistle, his books, his picklocking “tools”. They were hidden in the hollow of a tree just outside town. Theoretically, they were safe. But they didn’t feel safe if they weren’t by his side. Fancy that! A thief afraid of thievery!

Green eyes flitted this way and that.

There, across the street, was the little shop he had been looking for. Fenn touched the doorknob only to snatch his hand back from the sizzle of iron. Yowch! There was a now a slightly blistered red-grey patch on his palm; he grimaced, puffing his cheeks out in bitten-down anger. Human dwellings were so inconsiderate in their building materials! Hissing indignantly, he wrapped his sleeve around his hand and forced the stubborn door open with what small sliver of strength he had.

Inside, the shop was gloomy. Seriously gloomy. A few small braziers lit the room, while at the same time filling the space with drifting smoke. Shelves lined the walls, filled with jars of mysterious ingredients, and ugly cloth dolls. Fenn didn’t particularly like how they grinned down at him. Their smiles seemed… pained.

Aside from the dolls, there was only one other person in the shop, sitting behind the counter. She was a toothy old hag. Her skin drooped, yellowed with time, and her silver hair had been pulled back in in a bushy bottlebrush. More or less, she matched the descriptions he had heard. There were a few names that Fenn had heard around the block, but the most striking one had to be “Elder Creature”. Rumor had it that the witch lived somewhere deep within the Coronian woods — yet here she appeared in Radasanth every full moon to barter spells for coin.

The witch cracked open the wizened folds of an eye and glanced knowingly down to Fenn’s singed palm as he stomped up to the counter. “Did my door cause you trouble, frost sprite?”

Fenn nearly jumped out of his skin. His rumor-fueled suspicions that this lady was not someone to trifle seemed to be on the right track; not many came to the conclusion of “fae” when looking at him. Not when his ears were pointed, which apparently said “elf” to most unaware humans. He gave the witch an uneasy nod and plunked his bag down on the counter between them. A note was procured from the folds of his cloak; NEED INSIDE TO BE BIGGER THAN OUTSIDE. MUCH BIGGER. TOO HEAVY ON SHOULDERS, CAN’T HOLD ALL STUFF I CARRY. PLEASE FIX. HAVE MUCH MONEY COLLECTED TO PAY IF YOU CAN DO THIS.

Requesting an enchantment for Fenn’s bag. Specification; a “bottomless” enchantment. He can fit anything inside the bag so long as he can squeeze it in through the foot-and-a-fourth wide opening. The bag's inside now has roughly the capacity of a large barrel.

The witch blinked several times at the note and peered down her nose at the little Frost fae.

"Mute, are you? Sure you won't be wanting an enchantment for that as well? No? Well let's just see your bag then." She picked up the bag. She turned the worn rucksack over in her hands, muttering. "It's certainly seen a lot of use... but it is of sturdy design. This should be fine. I can put an enchantment on it to make it hold as much as a large rain barrel... and another to make it always as light as a feather. Would that suit your needs small sir?"

"I don't usually work with such... mundane fabrics." The witch said, running her hands over the cheap cloth. "If you'd like to buy something sturdier, perhaps made of vlince or silk, I could enchant that for you. However I'm afraid this satchel might tear under the duress of the magic."

((we're not actually supposed to enchant anything below tier 2, and ordinary cloth is tier 1. We could always upgrade the current satchel if Fenn is attached to it before enchanting.))

Uncertainty flickered across Fenn’s face in a wince as he considered the crone’s offer. He was pretty attached to that bag. It was one of the last things Raster had given him — but twenty years had not been kind. Right now, it was mostly of dirty, beaten burlap and linen, with colorful peeking patches of whatever other cloth he could scavenge to fix any tears he found.

Fenn tapped his foot on the polished floor, thinking.

He didn’t particularly like the idea of getting a new bag, but he also didn’t like the chance of whatever problems enchanting his current one would pose. It was going to hold his hoard. If something went amiss with the enchantment… fuck. That’d be be bad for his stuff. Nopenopenope. On top of that, his old bag could probably just be stored inside of whatever new bag he ended up with. You know, for safekeeping; really, it might be kinder to do that for the battered old thing...

Sighing, Fenn tapped the counter, and frost spread out from his touch. In it, he wrote; NEW BAG IT IS THEN. WHITE SIFAN? VLINCE IF IT TOO COSTLY OR NOT HAVE. HOW MUCH? One didn’t navigate black markets regularly without having some idea of what materials were out there.

Alright! Looking at a sifan bag then, same size as Fenn’s current one, same enchantment as requested before. Does that work? What price are we looking at? <3

The witch squinted at the scrabbled writing and scratched her nose. It always itched where she'd magically removed a large wart.

"A satchel of similar size, bearing the enchantments you've requested, would cost 300 gold pieces in vlince and 750 for sifan. I know it seems an awful lot, but the fabric is precious. I can fashion either for you and have it done by the end of the day, if you'll meet my price."

The price was pondered. Fenn recalled a time in which he stole a map because damn it he shouldn’t have to pay two hundred gold pieces for a slip of paper. But here, it seemed fair enough; enchantments were hard to get. He’d expected it would be costly. With what he had saved up for this, he had just enough for what he wanted.

ACCEPTABLE. SIFAN, PLEASE, he wrote, beaming. This was going to be a high-quality lootbag. WILL WAIT GLADLY!

And for once, without stealing anything. Everything in here seemed just a tad too creepy for him to want for himself, and he didn’t want to piss off a witch.

Between tending to other occasional customers, the witch toiled away constructing and enchanting the bag. By the time the shadows outside lengthened she beckoned Fenn over with a triumphant smile and presented the young Fae with a a white sifan satchel. It resembled his old one in size and design, and bore the enchantments he'd requested.

"There you are, little one. I hope it's to your liking."

Gratefully, Fenn beamed and took his new bag from the witch. The boy lifted the flap and peered inside; it was fairly dark, and a little disorienting in how much bigger it looked inside than out. He stuck his arm all the way in, and then some, not able to feel the bottom of the bag. The little fae’s eyes lit up in excitement. The thought occurred to him that he could likely climb right inside if he wanted to. Later, he promised himself, he would play around with this.

THANKS! he wrote. GOOD MAKE. VERY BIG.

She grinned back, her cheeks becoming a web of wrinkles. “You’re welcome, little frost sprite.”

Gratefully, Fenn took off his old satchel, fished out the coin purse from inside it, and sorted out the seven hundred gold for the witch. Afterward, the old satchel and coin pouch were gleefully dropped into the new one. Fenn marveled at how it was almost as if the vanished right from existence. They didn’t weigh down the new satchel one bit! And it felt close enough to the old one around his shoulder; that pleased him.

Almost burning himself on the door again — whoops — Fenn skipped out of the shop. He had a hoard he needed to dump into this bag!

The little Fae was so charming that the witch didn't mention the fact he was 50 GP short. Oh well, she thought, I was trying to charge him a little extra anyway. In truth, the only payment she needed was the smile on the boy's face as he traipsed out of the shop.

((Fenn receives: A white sifan satchel enchanted to hold as much as a large barrel and always be as light as if empty. Fenn pays: 700 GP.

    TRANSACTION COMPLETE.))
